    • Product developers choose tolerances to go along with every geometric dimension, and they typically do so based on how the tolerances influence variation in so-called “critical” dimensions of the final assembled product. A common decision-making approach is to minimize costs given some acceptable critical dimensional variation, but this strategy often conflicts with ecological sustainability objectives. This paper introduces a new approach to simultaneously considering the ecological and economic consequences of tolerances through a software tool that combines Robust Design and Tolerancing (RD&T) with Environmental Priority Strategies in product development (EPS). This allows designers to simultaneously assess the economic and ecological sustainability outcomes associated with geometry, material, and tolerance choices, and it is demonstrated through design optimization of an automotive part.

  • Point forecasts from experience: An empirical examination of judgmental forecasting
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The recent surge in prices brings predictions of future inflation into focus for many businesses. It is striking, however, that the forecasts of professionals with similar background in higher education are inherently heterogeneous. This poses the question of what drives the differences in forecasts. In the literature, different lifetime experiences are cited as a source of diversity (heterogeneity) in forecasts by individuals. We analyze a data set containing the individual point forecasts of monthly inflation rates made by 26 professional forecasters, over a period of 13 years for three different categories of inflation basket items. We find that besides available information, lifetime experience of inflation is a factor affecting the estimates of inflation and explaining the heterogeneity of forecasts. In the apparel category where, relative to other categories, inflation is easier to predict, forecasters rely mainly on available information. Finally, we observe differences across cohorts of forecasters when they are clustered according to lifetime experiences based on demographic data. Our results contribute to the broader literature on experiential effects on the forecasting task. Our findings have practical implications underscoring the need for managers to familiarize themselves with the work history and lifetime experiences of their employees.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Increasing demand for sustainable development during the last decades has expanded the scope of corporate responsibility to include environmental issues in all levels of operations. A number of different environmental management tools have been developed and implemented in companies. One important question is whether the resources spent in environmental management tools are used in an optimal way. Another question is if these resources give more eco‐efficient products as well as increased competitiveness. The aim of this paper is to analyse whether, and to what extent, the environmental management tool LCA is perceived as efficient within ABB. The conclusions to be drawn from this study are somewhat contradictory. On the one hand the technical, economic and environmental benefits from current use of the LCA tool seem to be very modest and LCA activities seem not to be integrated in normal operational activities, nor have they been used frequently in product development projects. On the other hand, there is a very positive opinion about the applicability and future use of the LCA tool. In fact a majority of the respondents believe that the LCA tool will stay and can be useful in the future.

  • High-Efficiency RF Pulsewidth Modulation of Class-E Power Amplifiers
  • 2011
  • In: IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques. - 0018-9480 .- 1557-9670. ; 59:11, s. 2931-2942
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • A new switch-mode power-amplifier (SMPA) topology particularly suitable for energy efficient amplification of RF pulsewidth modulation (RF-PWM) signals is derived. It is analytically shown that high efficiency can be maintained over a wide power dynamic range if the imaginary part of the Class-E load impedance is varied along with the duty cycle (pulsewidth). Using the theory developed, an explicit design procedure is presented that allows practical realization of the proposed topology from the circuit and component specifications. Following the design procedure, and using in-house (Chalmers University, Goteborg, Sweden) SiC varactor diodes to implement the tunable imaginary load impedance, a 2-GHz 10-W peak output power GaN HEMT circuit demonstrator is realized. RF-PWM input signals for characterization of the prototype power amplifier (PA) is generated with a dedicated 65-nm CMOS modulator. The measurements show that a drain efficiency > 70% can be obtained over an 6.5-dB dynamic range, which verifies the theory presented and demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed PA topology.

  • Learning by negotiation - Stake and salience in implementing a journal management system
  • 2015
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This research investigates how an international academic journal implements a new journal management system to overcome their knowledge management issues. By adopting a case study approach, the stakeholders involved within the project are identified and their salience for the organisation is mapped. By providing an account of how these stakeholders negotiated each other, the case highlights how these negotiations are learning processes, showing that learning process is not a conflict-free process. The case also shows that the stakeholder salience changes throughout the project, thus raising the importance of viewing these negotiations as learning platforms rather than just arenas of power struggles, and to use them as opportunities to identify possible future stakeholders

  • Rao-Blackwellised Particle Filter for Star-ConvexExtended Target Tracking Models
  • 2016
  • In: 2016 19th International Conference on Information Fusion. - 9780996452748 ; , s. 1193-1199
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper, we explore the potential gains in using Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods for extended target tracking (ETT) models based on Gaussian processes (GP). The existing random hypersurface based ETT models use Extended/Unscented Kalman filter for inference, which may lead to poor performance under high uncertainty. Particle filters (PFs) are known to provide robust performance in the cases where the non-linear Kalman filtering solutions fail. We design a Rao-Blackwellised particle filter (RBPF) where we exploit the conditional linear Gaussian structure of the GP parameters. We illustrate the gain in the performance with simulations.

  • Frequent intratype neutralization by plasma immunoglobulin A identified in HIV-2 infection.
  • 2013
  • In: AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses. - 1931-8405. ; 29:3, s. 470-478
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) is less transmissible and less pathogenic compared to HIV-1 and, when matched for CD4+ T cell count, the plasma viral load in HIV-2 infected individuals is approximately one log lower than in HIV-1 infected individuals. The explanation for these observations is elusive, but differences in virus controlling immunity generated in the two infections may be contributing factors. In the present study, we investigated neutralization by immunoglobulin A (IgA), in parallel with IgG, purified from plasma of HIV-1, HIV-2 and HIV-1/HIV-2 dually (HIV-D)-infected individuals. Neutralization was analyzed against HIV-1 and HIV-2 isolates using a plaque reduction assay. In HIV-2 infection, intratype-specific neutralization by IgA was frequently detected, although at a lesser magnitude then the corresponding IgG neutralizing titers. In contrast, neutralization by IgA could rarely be demonstrated in HIV-1 infection despite similar plasma IgA levels in both infections. In addition, IgA and IgG of HIV-D plasma neutralized the HIV-2 isolate more potently than the HIV-1 isolate, suggesting that the difference between neutralizing activity of plasma IgA and IgG depends on the virus itself. Taken together, these findings suggest that both IgA and IgG adds to the potent intratype neutralizing activity detected in HIV-2 plasma, which may contribute to virus control in HIV-2 infection.
