  • Large Shape Staggering in Neutron-Deficient Bi Isotopes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007. ; 127:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The changes in the mean-square charge radius (relative to Bi209), magnetic dipole, and electric quadrupole moments of Bi187,188,189,191 were measured using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique at ISOLDE (CERN). A large staggering in radii was found in Bi187,188,189g, manifested by a sharp radius increase for the ground state of Bi188 relative to the neighboring Bi187,189g. A large isomer shift was also observed for Bi188m. Both effects happen at the same neutron number, N=105, where the shape staggering and a similar isomer shift were observed in the mercury isotopes. Experimental results are reproduced by mean-field calculations where the ground or isomeric states were identified by the blocked quasiparticle configuration compatible with the observed spin, parity, and magnetic moment. © 2021 authors.

  • β -delayed fission of isomers in Bi 188
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985. ; 102:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • β-delayed fission (βDF) decay of a low-spin (ls) and a high-spin (hs) isomer in Bi188 was studied at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. Isomer-selective laser ionization and time gating were employed to investigate each isomer separately and their βDF partial half-lives were determined: T1/2p,βDF(188Bihs)=5.6(8)×103 s and T1/2p,βDF(188Bils)=1.7(6)×103 s. This work is the first βDF study of two states in one isotope and allows the spin dependence of low-energy fission to be explored. The fission fragment mass distribution of a daughter nuclide Pb188, following the β decay of the high-spin isomer, was deduced and indicates a mixture of symmetric and asymmetric fission modes. Experimental results were compared with self-consistent mean-field calculations based on the finite-range Gogny D1M interaction. To reproduce the measured T1/2p,βDF(188Bihs), the calculated fission barrier of Pb188 had to be reduced by ≈30%. After this reduction, the measured T1/2p,βDF(188Bils) was in agreement with calculations for a few possible configurations for Bils188. Theoretical βDF probabilities for these configurations were found to be lower by a factor of 4-9 than the βDF probability of Bihs188. The fission fragment mass distribution of Pb188 was compared to the scission-point model SPY and the calculations based on the finite-range liquid-drop model. The first observation of βDF for Bi190 is also reported. © 2020 authors. Published by the American Physical Society. • A literature review and expert consensus statement on diagnostics in suspected metal implant allergy
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. - 0926-9959.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Although rare, allergic reactions to metal implants represent a diagnostic challenge in view of missing guidelines. Objectives: To develop an European expert consensus on characteristics of metal allergy reactions and the utility of various diagnostic tools in suspected metal implant allergy. Methods: A nominal group technique (NGT) was applied to develop consensus statements. Initially an online literature database was created on a secure server to enable a comprehensive information. Twenty-three statements were formulated on potential aspects of metal implant allergy with a focus on diagnostics and grouped into five domains. For the consensus development, the panel of 12 experts initially did refine and reformulate those statements that were ambiguous or had unclear wording. By face-to-face (9/12) or virtual participation (3/12), an anonymous online voting was performed. Results: Consensus (≥80% of agreement) was reached in 20/23 statements. The panel agreed that implant allergy despite being rare should be considered in case of persistent unexplained symptoms. It was, however, recommended to allow adequate time for resolution of symptoms associated with healing and integration of an implant. Obtaining questionnaire-aided standardized medical history and standardized scoring of patient outcomes was also considered an important step by all experts There was broad consensus regarding the utility/performance of patch testing with additional late reading. It was recognized that the lymphocyte transformation test (LTT) has to many limitations to be generally recommended. Prior to orthopaedic implant, allergy screening of patients without a history of potential allergy to implant components was not recommended. Conclusions: Using an expert consensus process, statements concerning allergy diagnostics in suspected metal implant allergy were created. Areas of nonconsensus were identified, stressing uncertainty among the experts around topics such as preoperative testing in assumed allergy, histological correlate of periimplant allergy and in vitro testing, which underscores the need for further research.

  • Influence of clustering on the magnetic properties and hyperthermia performance of iron oxide nanoparticles
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 29:42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clustering of magnetic nanoparticles can drastically change their collective magnetic properties, which in turn may influence their performance in technological or biomedical applications. Here, we investigate a commercial colloidal dispersion (FeraSpin™R), which contains dense clusters of iron oxide cores (mean size around 9 nm according to neutron diffraction) with varying cluster size (about 18-56 nm according to small angle x-ray diffraction), and its individual size fractions (FeraSpin™XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL). The magnetic properties of the colloids were characterized by isothermal magnetization, as well as frequency-dependent optomagnetic and AC susceptibility measurements. From these measurements we derive the underlying moment and relaxation frequency distributions, respectively. Analysis of the distributions shows that the clustering of the initially superparamagnetic cores leads to remanent magnetic moments within the large clusters. At frequencies below 105 rad s-1, the relaxation of the clusters is dominated by Brownian (rotation) relaxation. At higher frequencies, where Brownian relaxation is inhibited due to viscous friction, the clusters still show an appreciable magnetic relaxation due to internal moment relaxation within the clusters. As a result of the internal moment relaxation, the colloids with the large clusters (FS-L, XL, XXL) excel in magnetic hyperthermia experiments.

  • SO2, silicate clouds, but no CH4 detected in a warm Neptune
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 625, s. 51-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • WASP-107b is a warm (approximately 740 K) transiting planet with a Neptune-like mass of roughly 30.5 M⊕ and Jupiter-like radius of about 0.94 RJ (refs. 1,2), whose extended atmosphere is eroding3. Previous observations showed evidence for water vapour and a thick, high-altitude condensate layer in the atmosphere of WASP-107b (refs. 4,5). Recently, photochemically produced sulfur dioxide (SO2) was detected in the atmosphere of a hot (about 1,200 K) Saturn-mass planet from transmission spectroscopy near 4.05 μm (refs. 6,7), but for temperatures below about 1,000 K, sulfur is predicted to preferably form sulfur allotropes instead of SO2 (refs. 8,9,10). Here we report the 9σ detection of two fundamental vibration bands of SO2, at 7.35 μm and 8.69 μm, in the transmission spectrum of WASP-107b using the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of JWST. This discovery establishes WASP-107b as the second irradiated exoplanet with confirmed photochemistry, extending the temperature range of exoplanets exhibiting detected photochemistry from about 1,200 K down to about 740 K. Furthermore, our spectral analysis reveals the presence of silicate clouds, which are strongly favoured (around 7σ) over simpler cloud set-ups. Furthermore, water is detected (around 12σ) but methane is not. These findings provide evidence of disequilibrium chemistry and indicate a dynamically active atmosphere with a super-solar metallicity.

  • In-source and in-trap formation of molecular ions in the actinide mass range at CERN-ISOLDE
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research Section B-Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms. - 0168-583X. ; 541, s. 375-379
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of radioactive molecules for fundamental physics research is a developing interdisciplinary field limited dominantly by their scarce availability. In this work, radioactive molecular ion beams containing actinide nuclei extracted from uranium carbide targets are produced via the Isotope Separation On-Line technique at the CERN-ISOLDE facility. Two methods of molecular beam production are studied: extraction of molecular ion beams from the ion source, and formation of molecular ions from the mass-separated ion beam in a gas-filled radio-frequency quadrupole ion trap. Ion currents of U+, UO1-3+, UC1-3+, UF1-4+, UF1,2O1,2+ are reported. Metastable tantalum and uranium fluoride molecular ions are identified. Formation of UO1-3+, U(OH)1-3+, UC1-3+, UF1,2O1,2+ from mass-separated beams of U+, UF1,2+ with residual gas is observed in the ion trap. The effect of trapping time on molecular formation is presented.

  • Progress towards the FRIB-EDM3-Frontend: A tool to provide radioactive molecules from isotope harvesting for fundamental symmetry studies
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research Section B-Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms. - 0168-583X. ; 541, s. 224-227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The under-construction FRIB-EDM3-instrument was designed to study polar radioactive molecules (such as RaF) in transparent cryogenic solids by laser spectroscopy. The instrument is divided into a frontend-and a backend section. The frontend accepts an aqueous sample from isotope harvesting and provides a mass-separated molecular ion beam in an ultra-high vacuum environment. In the backend, the ions are guided into alkali-metal vapor and the resulting neutrals are co-deposited in a solid argon matrix to perform laser spectroscopy. This work addresses the frontend of the instrument. The efficient ionization of harvested radioisotopes from aqueous samples is achieved with a spray-ionization method. Subsequently, the molecular ion beam is analyzed by mass -to-charge ratio by a quadrupole mass filter. To verify the feasibility of the approach, numerical simulations with the COMSOL and SIMION packages have been conducted. While the former was applied to study transport in ion funnels, the latter was used to investigate ion beam transmission through the lower pressure sections. Following promising simulation results, a first experimental setup is under construction.

  • Meningioma growth dynamics assessed by radiocarbon retrospective birth dating
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: EBioMedicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-3964. ; 27, s. 176-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is not known how long it takes from the initial neoplastic transformation of a cell to the detection of a tumor, which would be valuable for understanding tumor growth dynamics. Meningiomas show a broad histological, genetic and clinical spectrum, are usually benign and considered slowly growing. There is an intense debate regarding their age and growth pattern and when meningiomas should be resected. We have assessed the age and growth dynamics of 14 patients with meningiomas (WHO grade I: n = 6 with meningothelial and n = 6 with fibrous subtype, as well as n = 2 atypical WHO grade II meningiomas) by combining retrospective birth-dating of cells by analyzing incorporation of nuclear-bomb-test-derived 14C, analysis of cell proliferation, cell density, MRI imaging and mathematical modeling. We provide an integrated model of the growth dynamics of benign meningiomas. The mean age of WHO grade I meningiomas was 22.1 ± 6.5 years, whereas atypical WHO grade II meningiomas originated 1.5 ± 0.1 years prior to surgery (p < 0.01). We conclude that WHO grade I meningiomas are very slowly growing brain tumors, which are resected in average two decades after time of origination.
