  • Of routine consideration: 'civilising' children's bodies via food events in Swedish and English early childhood settings
  • 2019
  • In: Ethnography and Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-7823 .- 1745-7831. ; 14:2, s. 153-169
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Inspired initially by Elias's (1994) work on 'civilising processes', this article draws on a project in which an English and a Swedish researcher examines ethnographic data on mealtimes from two of their respective studies undertaken in early childhood settings. Despite the differing contexts, the data show a marked similarity in the way children's bodies become subject to 'civilising' during mealtimes. The article contends that mealtimes are times of the day when young children's bodies are subject to a high degree of disciplining when compared to the 'free' play elements of the day. Using the concept of 'over-civilising', we explore these processes, which are underpinned by a pervasive construction of young children's bodies as 'unruly', in need of 'civilising' and bringing under control. Whilst this impacts on how educators are 'expected' to manage mealtimes in their settings, the data show how children negotiate, appropriate and resist these 'body rules'.

  • Japansk populärkultur bland unga i svensk kontext: Lolitastilen som förhandling om ålder och genus
  • 2016
  • In: Educare. - 1653-1868. ; 2016:1, s. 180-200
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • An increasing interest in Eastern Asian popular culture can be discerned among Swedish youth. When cultural elements are used in new contexts, meanings are partly transformed and reenacted in new ways. This article explores how the Japanese fashion style Lolita is negotiated in a Swedish context. The data are based on observations and interviews at Swedish conventions for Eastern Asian popular culture, and a group interview with five teenagers using Lolita style. For analysis, we use concepts relating to age, gender and gaze. The re-sults show that Lolita style offers possibilities for the young people in our study, female as well as male, to explore a certain form of feminine girlishness. How-ever, this process involves negotiation about age, gender and bodies in public spaces, and by its use of childish femininity, the Lolita style seen through a spectator’s gaze may generate ridicule. Its radicality and provocation seem to lie in the way Lolitas challenge norms about gender, age and expectations about “growing up”.

  • Lärande för hållbar utveckling - är det någonting för förskolan, eller? : Rapport om OMEP:s projekt Lärande för hållbar utveckling i praktiken
  • 2012
  • Reports (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract

  • Novel prognostic markers within the CD44-stromal ligand network in pancreatic cancer
  • 2019
  • In: Journal of Pathology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0022-3417 .- 1096-9896. ; 5:2, s. 130-141
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The dense stroma in pancreatic cancer tumours is rich in secreted extracellular matrix proteins and proteoglycans. Secreted hyaluronan, osteopontin and type IV collagen sustain oncogenic signalling by interactions with CD44s and its variant isoform CD44v6 on cancer cell membranes. Although well established in animal and in vitro models, this oncogenic CD44-stromal ligand network is less explored in human cancer. Here, we use a pancreatic cancer tissue microarray from 69 primary tumours and 37 metastatic lymph nodes and demonstrate that high tumour cell expression of CD44s and, surprisingly, low stromal deposition of osteopontin correlate with poor survival independent of established prognostic factors for pancreatic cancer. High stromal expression of hyaluronan was a universal trait of both primary tumours and metastatic lymph nodes. However, hyaluronan species of different molecular mass are known to function differently in pancreatic cancer biology and immunohistochemistry cannot distinguish between them. Using gas-phase electrophoretic molecular mobility analysis, we uncover a shift towards high molecular mass hyaluronan in pancreatic cancer tissue compared to normal pancreas and at a transcriptional level, we find that hyaluronan synthesising HAS2 correlates positively with CD44. The resulting prediction that high molecular mass hyaluronan would then correlate with poor survival in pancreatic cancer was confirmed in serum samples, where we demonstrate that hyaluronan >27 kDa measured before surgery is an independent predictor of postoperative survival. Our findings confirm the prognostic value of CD44 tissue expression and highlight osteopontin tissue expression and serum high molecular mass hyaluronan as novel prognostic markers in pancreatic cancer.
