  • ELT-HIRES, the high resolution spectrograph for the ELT : Phase A study and path to construction
  • 2020
  • In: Ground-based and Airborne Instrumentation for Astronomy VIII. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9781510636828 - 9781510636811
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • HIRES is the high-resolution spectrograph of the European Extremely Large Telescope at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. It consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs providing a wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 µm (goal 0.35-2.4 µm) at a spectral resolution of 100,000. The fibre-feeding allows HIRES to have several, interchangeable observing modes including a SCAO module and a small diffraction-limited IFU in the NIR. Therefore, it will be able to operate both in seeing- and diffraction-limited modes. Its modularity will ensure that HIRES can be placed entirely on the Nasmyth platform, if enough mass and volume is available, or part on the Nasmyth and part in the Coud`e room. ELT-HIRES has a wide range of science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars (PopIII), tests on the stability of Nature’s fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The HIRES consortium is composed of more than 30 institutes from 14 countries, forming a team of more than 200 scientists and engineers.

  • SIGNALS : I. Survey description
  • 2019
  • In: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 489:4, s. 5530-5546
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • SIGNALS, the Star formation, Ionized Gas, and Nebular Abundances Legacy Survey, is a large observing programme designed to investigate massive star formation and HII regions in a sample of local extended galaxies. The programme will use the imaging Fourier transform spectrograph SITELLE at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Over 355 h (54.7 nights) have been allocated beginning in fall 2018 for eight consecutive semesters. Once completed, SIGNALS will provide a statistically reliable laboratory to investigate massive star formation, including over 50 000 resolved HII regions: the largest, most complete, and homogeneous data base of spectroscopically and spatially resolved extragalactic HII regions ever assembled. For each field observed, three datacubes covering the spectral bands of the filters SN1 (363386 nm), SN2 (482-513 nm), and SN3 (647-685 nm) are gathered. The spectral resolution selected for each spectral band is 1000, 1000, and 5000, respectively. As defined, the project sample will facilitate the study of small-scale nebular physics and many other phenomena linked to star formation at a mean spatial resolution of similar to 20 pc. This survey also has considerable legacy value for additional topics, including planetary nebulae, diffuse ionized gas, and supernova remnants. The purpose of this paper is to present a general outlook of the survey, notably the observing strategy, galaxy sample, and science requirements.

  • A method of computing uncertain nitrogen and phosphorus loads in a small stream from an agricultural catchment using continuous monitoring data
  • 2012
  • In: Journal of Hydrology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-1694 .- 1879-2707. ; 458-459, s. 1-8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A method for computing loads of total phosphorus and nitrate from a small catchment in the Czech Republic has been presented, given continuous measurements of water levels, turbidity and an ion-specific NO3--N probe together with a limited number of discharge measurements and analyses of grab samples. Given the observed variability in the observations, log-log regressions are used to convert water levels to discharge and to derive continuous estimates of total phosphorus and nitrate. Integrations to estimate loads using predicted values of the true discharges and concentrations are then carried out by a Monte Carlo method to avoid strong assumptions of independence and distribution. Coefficients of variation for the estimated monthly loads range from 5% to 23% for TP and 12-36% for NO3--N. At the annual time scales, coefficients of variation are of the order of 5% for both TP and NO3--N. The variability in the estimated annual loads between the years was, however, significantly larger than the uncertainties estimated within each year.

  • Results of an International Comparison of Instrument Current Transformers up to 10 kA at 50 Hz Frequency
  • 2018
  • In: CPEM 2018 - Conference on Precision Electromagnetic Measurements. - 9781538609736
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Traceability of the current ratio is crucial for the measurement of electrical energy in revenue metering. A comparison of the AC current ratio was therefore performed within EURAMET in the time period 2012-2016, using a precision CT as the traveling device. The Czech Metrology Institute (CMI) as coordinator processed the measurement results of the 15 European participating laboratories. The comparison of the results for transformer ratios of (4, 5, 6, 8, 10) kA 5 A at 15 VA burden and (4 and 10) kA 5 A ratios at 5 VA burden indicates good agreement between the participating laboratories. The main differences are found for phase displacement, at least in part due to instability of the traveling standard. .
