  • Radical Calshes : What Tangible Interaction is Made of
  • 2013
  • In: Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction - TEI '13. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450318983 ; , s. 323-326
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Driven by a critique of Ishii et al’s recent vision of Radical Atoms we call for a debate on the different conceptual paradigms underlying the TEI community and its activities. TEI was initiated to share and connect different perspectives, but we feel conceptual debate is lacking. To fuel this debate, we start with comparing two paradigms by examining the Radical Atoms proposal and balance it from our design-led perspective. Our aim with this paper is to revive the richness of TEI’s multidisciplinary approach.

  • Civic forges : weaving neighbourhoods
  • 2014
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Our society is faced with a number of major challenges. Critical matters like financial tension, pollution, and safety and health issues prove to be difficult to solve with just one simple answer. In many cases these major challenges cannot be unravelled by traditional means and solutions, but require a radical approach to move towards a more sustainable and balanced society. To reach a new equilibrium we need to confront today’s challenges by exploring new ways of thinking and working. By doing so, it is necessary to develop new frameworks, methods, and tools in order to come up with new systematic designs, which create opportunities to transform our society.

  • Design Research and Innovation Framework for Transformative Practices
  • 2018
  • In: Strategies for Change. - Glasgow : Glasgow Caledonian University. - 9789727894826
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In this chapter, the concept of Transformative Practices is introduced, i.e. shared relative steady ways of living and working with others (Wittgenstein, 1993), including specific configurations of actions, norms and knowledge (Freeman et al., 2011) and related tools and environments, focused at addressing our societal challenges, by transforming (elevating) our personal and social ethics and related behaviour through designing new ways of interaction with each other and the world. Through design research and innovation within these practices, we work together towards social-cul- turally, environmentally and economically sustainable communities.

  • Designing in skills studio
  • 2014
  • In: Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction (TEI ’14). - New York, NY, USA : ACM. ; , s. 357-360
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Designing in Skills Studio provides a framework and tools to address the theme of collaboration in a design process, applying the theories of embodiment and skilful coping. Each participant will collaborate with the others in order to explore one of his perceptual-motor skills, and find out how this skill shapes his sensitivity and can contribute to a richer shared design process and outcome. The studio aims at creating the stage for reflecting on the impact of embodiment on cooperation, and based on these insights, discussing and initiating the development of new ways of tangible and embodied interaction for multi-stakeholder cooperation in the future.

  • Embracing First-Person Perspectives in Soma-Based Design
  • 2018
  • In: INFORMATICS-BASEL. - : MDPI. - 2227-9709. ; 5:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A set of prominent designers embarked on a research journey to explore aesthetics in movement-based design. Here we unpack one of the design sensitivities unique to our practice: a strong first person perspective-where the movements, somatics and aesthetic sensibilities of the designer, design researcher and user are at the forefront. We present an annotated portfolio of design exemplars and a brief introduction to some of the design methods and theory we use, together substantiating and explaining the first-person perspective. At the same time, we show how this felt dimension, despite its subjective nature, is what provides rigor and structure to our design research. Our aim is to assist researchers in soma-based design and designers wanting to consider the multiple facets when designing for the aesthetics of movement. The applications span a large field of designs, including slow introspective, contemplative interactions, arts, dance, health applications, games, work applications and many others.

  • Soma-based design theory
  • 2017
  • In: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450346566 ; , s. 550-557
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Movement-based interaction design is increasingly popular, with application domains ranging from dance, sport, gaming to physical rehabilitation. In a workshop at CHI 2016, a set of prominent artists, game design-ers, and interaction designers embarked on a research journey to explore what we came to refer to as "aesthetics in soma-based design". In this follow-up work-shop, we would like to take the next step, shifting from discussing the philosophical underpinnings we draw upon to explain and substantiate our practice, to form our own interaction design theory and conceptualisations. We propose that soma-based design theory needs practical, pragmatic as well as analytical study -- otherwise the felt dimension will be missing. We will consider how such tacit knowledge can be articulated, documented and shared. To ground the discussion firmly in the felt experience of our own practice, the work-shop is organised as a joint practical design work session, supported by analytical study.

  • Irresistible brushes or open stickies? : bodystorming vs. brainstorming
  • 2014
  • In: Proceedings of Design Research Society Conference, DRS 2014.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • What is the effect of skilful coping in multi-stakeholder co-design activities? During a 2 months research-through-design project, we explored the potential and the effect of bodystorm techniques in comparison with more commonly used brainstorm techniques. Would bodystorm techniques have the potential to increase people’s level of engagement or even the quality of the outcome of the co-design process? In two separate co-design workshops, we invited residents of the neighbourhood Vaartbroek in Eindhoven, employees from the housing cooperative Woonbedrijf and civil servants from the Municipality of Eindhoven to generate ideas and initiatives for creating a self-empowered community.

  • The Blue Studio : Designing an Interactive Environmentfor Embodied Multi-Stakeholder Ideation Processes
  • 2017
  • In: TEI 2017 - Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Tangible, Embedded, and Embodied Interaction. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery, Inc. - 9781450346764
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper describes the process of designing the Blue Studio: An interactive space for embodied multi-stakeholder ideation processes. Inspired by embodied sensemaking - the way people make sense of things through external expression and interaction with other people - we iteratively designed material, interactive and spatial interventions in the Blue Studio and evaluated them with multi-stakeholder participants in various studies. Thereupon, we analyzed the impact of the design interventions, based on the seven principles to design for embodied sensemaking and highlighted opportunities for refining our interactive space for embodied ideation. Based on the insights gained, a final design of the Blue Studio was realized and evaluated on functionality.

  • [X]Changing Perspectives : An Interactive System for Participatory Sensemaking
  • 2017
  • In: DIS'17. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450349222 ; , s. 259-269
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Public issues are complex: they concern many different stakeholders who have conflicting stakes and are involved from their unique perspective. Working on public issues requires an open process that allows stakeholders to not only contribute to decision-making but also to take up a role in the process. We propose [X]Changing Perspectives, a product service system that stimulates participatory sensemaking: the joint construction of meaning between individuals that could not have been reached on their own. We visually demonstrate the designed materials and service elements and discuss the promise of our approach to [X]CP for complex design challenges in public issues.
