  • Status of research toward the ITER disruption mitigation system
  • 2015
  • In: Physics of Plasmas. - : AIP Publishing. - 1089-7674 .- 1070-664X. ; 22:2, s. 021802-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • An overview of the present status of research toward the final design of the ITER disruption mitigation system (DMS) is given. The ITER DMS is based on massive injection of impurities, in order to radiate the plasma stored energy and mitigate the potentially damaging effects of disruptions. The design of this system will be extremely challenging due to many physics and engineering constraints such as limitations on port access and the amount and species of injected impurities. Additionally, many physics questions relevant to the design of the ITER disruption mitigation system remain unsolved such as the mechanisms for mixing and assimilation of injected impurities during the rapid shutdown and the mechanisms for the subsequent formation and dissipation of runaway electron current.

  • BER Estimation from EVM for QPSK and 16-QAM Coherent Optical Systems
  • 2016
  • In: IEEE 6th International Conference on Photonics (ICP), Kuching, Malaysia, Mar 14-17, 2016. - 2330-5665. - 9781467381536
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BER estimation from measured EVM values is shown experimentally for QPSK and 16QAM optical signals with 28 GBd. Various impairments, such as gain imbalance, quadrature error and timing skew, are introduced into the transmitted signal in order to evaluate the robustness of the method. The EVM was measured using two different real-time sampling systems and the EVM measurement accuracy is discussed.

  • ALMA sub-mm maser and dust distribution of VY Canis Majoris
  • 2014
  • In: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 572
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Aims. Cool, evolved stars have copious, enriched winds. Observations have so far not fully constrained models for the shaping and acceleration of these winds. We need to understand the dynamics better, from the pulsating stellar surface to similar to 10 stellar radii, where radiation pressure on dust is fully effective. Asymmetric nebulae around some red supergiants imply the action of additional forces. Methods. We retrieved ALMA Science Verification data providing images of sub-mm line and continuum emission from VY CMa. This enables us to locate water masers with milli-arcsec accuracy and to resolve the dusty continuum. Results. The 658, 321, and 325 GHz masers lie in irregular, thick shells at increasing distances from the centre of expansion. For the first time this is confirmed as the stellar position, coinciding with a compact peak offset to the NW of the brightest continuum emission. The maser shells overlap but avoid each other on scales of up to 10 au. Their distribution is broadly consistent with excitation models but the conditions and kinematics are complicated by wind collisions, clumping, and asymmetries.
