  • Epidemiological typing of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) : spa typing versus pulsed-field gel electrophoresis

    • Molecular methods based on sequencing, such as spa typing, have facilitated epidemiological typing of bacterial isolates compared to the gold standard pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), a technically more demanding method. We studied methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in 4 Swedish counties from 2003 through 2005, and compared spa typing and PFGE results to epidemiological data. Of 280 MRSA isolates, 91 were from sporadic cases and 189 were associated with 35 outbreaks. A total of 50 spa types and 74 PFGE patterns were detected. 60 (21%) of the MRSA isolates carried the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes. 12 of the PVL-positive MRSA were healthcare associated. 25 of the spa types and 31 of the PFGE patterns were associated with outbreaks. In 1 of the outbreaks we found isolates with different but closely related spa types, and in 6 of the outbreaks we observed isolates with different but related PFGE patterns. In this low-endemic setting, with outbreaks limited in time and place, we found spa typing to be a useful tool for epidemiological typing of MRSA, due to its rapidity, accessibility, ease of use, and standardized nomenclature.

  • Brief internet-delivered skills training based on DBT for adults with borderline personality disorder : a feasibility study

    • OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by instability in emotions, relationships, and behaviors, such as self-injury and suicidal behavior. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is an established intervention for BPD, but there are long waiting times for treatment. This study aimed to explore if a brief internet-delivered DBT skills training program with minimal therapist support is acceptable, that it can be administered, useful, and does not do harm for patients with BPD.METHODS: Acceptability was measured through data on recruitment and attrition, utilization of the intervention, reported impulses to drop out, and through ratings on self-injury and suicidality. Participants were interviewed about their experiences of the intervention; analyzed with content analysis.RESULTS: Twenty patients on the waiting list for treatment at a DBT-clinic were invited and nine female patients (age 19-37 years) volunteered. The participants completed a large part of the intervention, which did not appear harmful since ratings of suicidal and self-harming behavior were similar before and after the intervention. In the interviews, participants stated that they had gained new knowledge and skills to manage situations, e.g. to stop and think before acting. Some even reported decreased levels of self-injury. The time spent on patient contact was short, and some patients reported difficulties to practice on their own and requested more support.CONCLUSIONS: The intervention seems to be acceptable. Future studies should investigate in what ways some BPD patients are more susceptible to internet-delivered skills training than others, and if this intervention could be delivered within a stepped-care model.

    • This paper describes the trigger and offline reconstruction, identification and energy calibration algorithms for hadronic decays of tau leptons employed for the data collected from pp collisions in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC center-of-mass energy root s = 8 TeV. The performance of these algorithms is measured in most cases with Z decays to tau leptons using the full 2012 dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1). An uncertainty on the offline reconstructed tau energy scale of 2-4%, depending on transverse energy and pseudorapidity, is achieved using two independent methods. The offline tau identification efficiency is measured with a precision of 2.5% for hadronically decaying tau leptons with one associated track, and of 4% for the case of three associated tracks, inclusive in pseudorapidity and for a visible transverse energy greater than 20 GeV. For hadronic tau lepton decays selected by offline algorithms, the tau trigger identification efficiency is measured with a precision of 2-8%, depending on the transverse energy. The performance of the tau algorithms, both offline and at the trigger level, is found to be stable with respect to the number of concurrent proton-proton interactions and has supported a variety of physics results using hadronically decaying tau leptons at ATLAS.

    • This Letter reports a measurement of the exclusive gamma gamma -> l(+)l(-) (l = e, mu) cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, based on an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1). For the electron or muon pairs satisfying exclusive selection criteria, a fit to the dilepton acoplanarity distribution is used to extract the fiducial cross-sections. The cross-section in the electron channel is determined to be sigma(excl)(gamma gamma -> e+e-) = 0.428 +/- 0.035 (stat.) +/- 0.018 (syst.) pbfor a phase-space region with invariant mass of the electron pairs greater than 24GeV, in which both electrons have transverse momentum p(T) > 12 GeV and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.4. For muon pairs with invariant mass greater than 20GeV, muon transverse momentum pT> 10 GeV and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.4, the cross-section is determined to be sigma(excl)(gamma gamma -> mu+mu-) = 0.628 +/- 0.032(stat.) +/- 0.021 (syst.) pb. When proton absorptive effects due to the finite size of the proton are taken into account in the theory calculation, the measured cross-sections are found to be consistent with the theory prediction.
