- PURPOSE: This randomized multicenter, open-label, trial compared efficacy, acceptability, tolerability and compliance of NuvaRing with a combined oral contraceptive (COC), containing 30 mug of ethinyl estradiol (EE) and 3 mg of drospirenone. METHOD: In this 13-cycle study, 983 women were randomized and treated (intent-to-treat population) with NuvaRing or COC. RESULTS: One in-treatment pregnancy occurred with NuvaRing (Pearl Index=0.25) (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.006, 1.363) and four with the COC (Pearl Index=0.99) (95% CI: 0.269, 2.530). For both groups, compliance (89.2% NuvaRing, 85.5% COC) and satisfaction (84% NuvaRing; 87% COC) were high; the vast majority of women found NuvaRing easy to insert (96%) and remove (97%). Tolerability was similar; the most frequent adverse events with NuvaRing were related to ring use, whereas estrogen-related events were more common with the COC. CONCLUSION: NuvaRing has comparable efficacy and tolerability to a COC containing 30 mug of EE and 3 mg drospirenone. User acceptability of both methods was high.

- The study focuses on two types of social action-communicative and strategic- and examinses whether they have different effects on competence to act. Competence is here understood as a feeling of being able to handle a situation, which includes the participants`interpretation of the situation at hand, 'concealing of their action' and the intention to perform the act. Communicative action is a consensus-oriented process built upon the parties' mutual defintions of how to reach a goal. Strategic action is a way to more directly reach a goal wherer influencing and manipulating the other can take place. This thesis was investigated by means of an experimental study. The results indicate that communicative action seems to be connected with openness do diversity and individual experiences. It was also shown how the subtle epression of unaccepted power can disturb feelings of being capable and disturb the balance between one's self-respect and the other person's authority. This disturbance is caused not only by the content of the dialogue but also by the manner in which the encounter takes place. The result give partial confirmation to the thesis underlying the theory of communicative action.

- The most efficient use of spatial volume and the lowest potential energies in the metal oxide structures are based on cubic close packing (ccp) or hexagonal close packing (hcp) of anions with cations occupying the interstices. A promising way to tune the composition of close packed oxides and design new compounds is related to fragmenting the parent structure into modules by periodically spaced planar interfaces, such as twin planes at the unit cell scale. The unique crystal chemistry properties of cations with a lone electron pair, such as Bi3+ or Pb2+, when located at interfaces, enables them to act as "chemical scissors'', to help relieve configurational strain. With this approach, we synthesized a new oxide, BiMnFe2O6, where fragments of the hypothetical hcp oxygen-based MO structure (the NiAs structure type), for the first time, serve as the building modules in a complex transition metal oxide. Mn3+ and Fe3+ ions are randomly distributed in two crystallographically independent sites (M1 and M2). The structure consists of quasi two-dimensional blocks of the 2H hexagonal close packed MO structure cut along the (114) crystal plane of the hcp lattice and stacked along the c axis. The blocks are related by a mirror operation that allows BiMnFe2O6 to be considered as a polysynthetically twinned 2H hcp MO structure. The transition to an AFM state with an incommensurate spin configuration at similar to 212 K is established by Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and low temperature powder neutron diffraction.
