  • Medical Data Processing and Analysis for Remote Health and Activities Monitoring
  • 2019
  • In: High-Performance Modelling and Simulation for Big Data Applications. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030162719 - 9783030162726 ; , s. 186-220
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Recent developments in sensor technology, wearable computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and wireless communication have given rise to research in ubiquitous healthcare and remote monitoring of human’s health and activities. Health monitoring systems involve processing and analysis of data retrieved from smartphones, smart watches, smart bracelets, as well as various sensors and wearable devices. Such systems enable continuous monitoring of patients psychological and health conditions by sensing and transmitting measurements such as heart rate, electrocardiogram, body temperature, respiratory rate, chest sounds, or blood pressure. Pervasive healthcare, as a relevant application domain in this context, aims at revolutionizing the delivery of medical services through a medical assistive environment and facilitates the independent living of patients. In this chapter, we discuss (1) data collection, fusion, ownership and privacy issues; (2) models, technologies and solutions for medical data processing and analysis; (3) big medical data analytics for remote health monitoring; (4) research challenges and opportunities in medical data analytics; (5) examples of case studies and practical solutions.

  • Network Structure of Phonographic Market with Characteristic Similarities between Artists
  • 2013
  • In: Acta Physica Polonica. A. - 0587-4246 .- 1898-794X. ; 123:3, s. 547-552
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We investigate relations between bestselling artists in last decade on phonographic market and from perspective of listeners by using the Social Network Analyzes. Starting network is obtained from the matrix of correlations between the world's bestselling artists by considering the synchronous time evolution of weekly record sales. This method reveals the structure of phonographic market, but we claim that it has no impact on people who see relationship between artists and music genres. We compare sale (based on correlation of record sales) or popularity (based on data mining of the record charts) networks with similarity (obtained mainly from survey within music experts' opinion) and find no significant relations. We postulate that non-laminar phenomena on this specific market introduce turbulence to how people view relations of artists.

  • Obliczeniowe nauki społeczne w praktyce
  • 2014
  • Book (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract

  • Reading Stockholm Riots 2013 in social media by text-mining
  • 2013
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The riots in Stockholm in May 2013 were an event that reverberated in the world media for its dimension of violence that had spreadthrough the Swedish capital. In this study we have investigated the role of social media in creating media phenomena via text miningand natural language processing. We have focused on two channels of communication for our analysis: Twitter and Poloniainfo.se(Forum of Polish community in Sweden). Our preliminary results show some hot topics driving discussion related mostly to SwedishPolice and Swedish Politics by counting word usage. Typical features for media intervention are presented. We have built networks ofmost popular phrases, clustered by categories (geography, media institution, etc.). Sentiment analysis shows negative connotation withPolice. The aim of this preliminary exploratory quantitative study was to generate questions and hypotheses, which we could carefullyfollow by deeper more qualitative methods.

  • Rola analizy sieci społecznych w odkrywaniu narracyjnej struktury fikcji literackiej
  • 2013
  • In: Biuletyn Instytutu Systemów Informatycznych. - 1508-4183. ; :12, s. 35-42
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In our paper we would like to make a cross-disciplinary leap and use the tools of network theory to understand and explore narrative structure in literary fiction, an approach that is still underestimated. However, the systems in fiction are sensitive to reader’s subjectivity and attention must to be paid to different methods of extracting networks. The project aims at investigating into different ways social interactions are, read in texts by comparing networks produced by automated algorithms-natural language processing (NLP) with those created by surveying more subjective human responses. Conversation networks from fiction have been already extracted by scientists, but the more general framework surrounding these interactions was missing. We propose several NLP methods for detecting interactions and test them against a range of human perceptions. In doing so, we have pointed to some limitations of using network analysis to test literary theory (e.g. interaction, which corresponds to the plot, does not form climax).

  • Sentiment analysis, topic modelling and social network analysis : COVID-19, protest movements and the Polish Tweetosphere
  • 2022
  • In: The Covid-19 Pandemic as a Challenge for Media and Communication Studies. - London : Routledge. - 9781000537420 - 9781003232049 ; , s. 210-224
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Extensive anti-government protests were held in Poland in October 2020 related to accumulated social tensions due to COVID-19 pandemic among others. We attempt a question of how understanding communication patterns among protesters could possibly support epidemiological harm reduction campaigns. To do so, we analysed tweets in Polish language with hashtags: #Strajkkobiet representing pro-choice movement woman’s strike (227, 125), #zajob representing coronascepticism movement (22, 379), #ProtestRolników for farmers protest (9, 739) and Social Network Analysis (SNA) was applied. Practical recommendations for harm reduction and educational communicates have been revealed: (1)#Strajkkobiet – Due to the modular structure of the network, the organisers or protest leaders would not be able to propagate pro-health communication towards the “teenagers” clusters. (2)#Zajob – Very high network density with very low modularity suggests that such a network is resilient to interventions such as the blocking of single accounts or inhibiting reach ofcontent. (3)#ProtestRolników – Animal breeders’ protest communication has the most hierarchical and modular structure of all the networks studied with clear boundaries between communities and opinion leaders who could propagate information campaigns for their followers.
