  • An extended packetization-aware mapping algorithm for scalable video coding in finite-length fountain codes
  • 2013
  • In: Science China Information Sciences. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1674-733X .- 1869-1919. ; 56:4, s. 042311-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We propose an extended packetization-aware mapping algorithm based on fountain codes to enhance video stream performance which is vulnerable to packet losses. By properly utilizing the proposed algorithm in finite-length cases, the edges connecting to a source symbol are scattered over multiple encoding packets so that the decoding probabilities are increased. Furthermore, an improved degree distribution is designed to obtain better decoding probabilities. Numerical results, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithm in finite-length cases can augment decoding probabilities and the improved degree distribution can increase peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of scalable video coding (SVC) in a hostile communication environment.

  • Statistically robust resource allocation for distributed multi-carrier cooperative networks
  • 2013
  • In: Science China Information Sciences. - : Springer. - 1674-733X .- 1869-1919. ; 56:2, s. 109-121
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate joint subcarrier and power allocation scheme for distributed multi-carrier cooperative networks with imperfect channel state information. Using practical channel estimation algorithms, the statistic model of the channel estimation error is first derived. Then based on the channel error model, the resource allocation scheme aims at maximizing the sum rate of the overall network. Specifically, both subcarrier allocation and power allocation are taken into account. In the subcarrier allocation, a realistic problem of the power leakage between neighboring subcarriers is also addressed. Furthermore, based on Lagrange dual-decomposition algorithm, a practical power allocation algorithm is proposed. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed robust design.

  • Improved Luby transform codes in low overhead regions for binary erasure channels
  • 2014
  • In: Transaction on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 2161-3915.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We study improved degree distribution for Luby transform (LT) codes, which exhibits improved bit error rates particularly in low overhead regions. We construct the degree distribution by modifying robust soliton distribution. The performance of our proposed LT codes is evaluated and compared with the conventional LT codes via And-Or tree analysis. Then we propose a transmission scheme based on our proposed degree distribution to improve the frame error rate in full recovery regions. Furthermore, the improved degree distribution is applied to distributed multi-source relay networks and unequal error protection. It is shown that our schemes achieve better performance and reduced complexity especially in low overhead regions, compared with conventional schemes.

  • Adaptive Partial Decode-and-Forward Relaying with Quantized Feedback
  • 2011
  • In: Proceedings of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC). - : IEEE. - 9781424483327 ; , s. 1-6
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper, we propose two spectrally efficient adaptive partial decode-and-forward (DF)cooperative communication schemes, which are adaptive partialrepetition DF with quantized feedback (APR-DF-QF) and adaptivepartial coded cooperation DF with quantized feedback (APCC-DF-QF).We assume the relay node only has partial channel-state information, which is obtainedvia an quantized feedback link. We use the so-called mutual information (MI)model to adaptively optimize the amount of data that need to beforwarded by the relay node under a given block-error-rateconstraint. Simulation results show that with the optimized feedback, the MI model can predict well theoptimal amount of information that needs to be forwarded by therelay node, and that the two proposed schemes can substantiallyincrease the spectral efficiency.

  • Design of Binary Network Codes for Multiuser Multiway Relay Networks
  • 2013
  • In: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. - 0018-9545 .- 1939-9359. ; 62:8, s. 3786-3799
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We study multiuser multiway relay networks where N user nodes exchange their information through a single-relay node. We use network coding (NC) in the relay to increase the throughput. Due to the limitation of complexity, we only consider the binary multiuser NC (BMNC) in the relay. We study the BMNC matrix [in GF(2)] and propose several design criteria on the BMNC matrix to improve the symbol error probability (SEP) performance. Closed-form expressions of the SEP of the system are provided. Moreover, an upper bound of the SEP is also proposed to provide further insights into system performance. Then, BMNC matrices are designed to minimize error probabilities.

  • Outage probability analysis for superposition coded symmetric relaying
  • 2013
  • In: SCIENCE CHINA-INFORMATION SCIENCES. - : Springer Verlag (Germany). - 1674-733X .- 1869-1919. ; 56:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Superposition coded symmetric relaying is a bandwidth-efficient cooperative scheme where each source node simultaneously transmits both its own "local" packet and "relay" packet that originated at its partner by adding the modulated local and relay signals in Euclidean space. This paper investigates the power allocation and outage probability of a superposition coded symmetric relaying system with finite-constellation signaling. We first derive the mutual information (MI) metrics for the system. The derived MI metrics consist of two parts: one represents the MI conveyed by the modulated signal corresponding to its own data, and the other represents the MI conveyed by the modulated signal corresponding to its partners data. Using MI based effective signal-to-noise ratio mapping technique, we attain expressions for the outage probability. Furthermore, we discuss power allocation policies that minimize the outage probability. Simulation results are presented to verify the correctness of the outage probability analysis and the benefits of the power allocation.

  • Power allocation for OFDM-based cognitive heterogeneous networks
  • 2013
  • In: Science China Information Sciences. - : Springer. - 1674-733X .- 1869-1919. ; 56:4, s. 1-10
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper, the capacity maximization and the spectrum utilization efficiency improvement are investigated for the Pico cells in broadband heterogeneous networks. In frequency-reuse model, the users attached to Macro base station are usually viewed as primary users, and those attached to Pico base station should be regarded as cognitive radio (CR) users. As both the primary users and the CR users communicate in parallel frequency bands, the performance of the system is limited by the mutual inter-carrier interference (ICI). In order to control ICI and maximize the achievable transmission rate of the CR users, an effective power allocation scheme is proposed to maximize the transmission rate of the CR users under a given interference threshold prescribed by the primary users. By transforming this suboptimal solution into an innovative matrix expression, the algorithm is easier to perform in practice. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides a large performance gain in Pico cell capacity over the non-cooperative and equal power allocation schemes.
