    • The Triple F (Fresh From the Fridge) mission, a Comet Nucleus Sample Return, has been proposed to ESA's Cosmic Vision program. A sample return from a comet enables us to reach the ultimate goal of cometary research. Since comets are the least processed bodies in the solar system, the proposal goes far beyond cometary science topics (like the explanation of cometary activity) and delivers invaluable information about the formation of the solar system and the interstellar molecular cloud from which it formed. The proposed mission would extract three sample cores of the upper 50 cm from three locations on a cometary nucleus and return them cooled to Earth for analysis in the laboratory. The simple mission concept with a touch-and-go sampling by a single spacecraft was proposed as an M-class mission in collaboration with the Russian space agency ROSCOSMOS.

    • Dust in the Interstellar Medium (ISM) is intimately linked to the life cycle of stars. Despite being of such fundamental importance to galaxy evolution, the dynamic behaviour and composition of the ISM are not yet fully understood. Observations of reddened Milky Way OB stars have revealed a strong UV extinction feature around 2175 Å and a precipitous extinction rise to the far UV along the lines of sight. Whilst the carrier(s) for this are at present still being debated, multiple laboratory studies suggest carbonate grains to be the key constituent. EREBUS is a mission concept being developed to study the composition of the ISM in both the Milky Way and Local Group Galaxies, primarily by mapping the spatial distribution of the UV extinction features. As these features are sensitive to the dust composition along the line of sight, EREBUS will provide a wealth of information about the spatial distribution and dynamic behaviour of the carrier(s). The mission proposes to deploy a satellite observatory equipped with a coarse UV spectrograph to map the extinction curve variability in the Milky Way in 3 dimensions and in the Local Group in 2 dimensions. In this paper, we discuss the scientific goals for the project, discuss a proposed observation strategy using an iterative process to develop a hierarchical map, and finally outline the instrument requirements and preliminary spacecraft architecture.

    • Polysaccharides are among the most abundant bioresources on earth and consequently need to play a pivotal role when addressing existential scientific challenges like climate change and the shift from fossil-based to sustainable biobased materials. The Research Roadmap 2040 of the European Polysaccharide Network of Excellence (EPNOE) provides an expert's view on how future research and development strategies need to evolve to fully exploit the vast potential of polysaccharides as renewable bioresources. It is addressed to academic researchers, companies, as well as policymakers and covers five strategic areas that are of great importance in the context of polysaccharide related research: (I) Materials & Engineering, (II) Food & Nutrition, (III) Biomedical Applications, (IV) Chemistry, Biology & Physics, and (V) Skills & Education. Each section summarizes the state of research, identifies challenges that are currently faced, project achievements and developments that are expected in the upcoming 20 years, and finally provides outlines on how future research activities need to evolve.

    • In this quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) study we have investigated the relation between protein and solvent dynamics. Myoglobin in different water:glycerol mixtures has been studied in the temperature range 260-320 K. In order to distinguish between solvent and protein dynamics we have measured protonated as well as partly deuterated samples. As commonly observed for bulk as well as for confined water, the dynamics of the surrounding solvent is well described by a jump-diffusion model. The intermediate scattering function I(Q,t) from the protein (partly deuterated samples) was analysed by fitting a single Kolrausch-William-Watts (KWW) stretched exponential function to the data. However, due to the limited experimental time window, two different curve fitting approaches were used. The first one was performed with the assumption that I(Q,t) decays to zero at long times, i.e. it was assumed that all protein relaxations that are observed on the experimental time scale, as well as would be observed on longer time scales, can be described by a single KWW function. In the second approach we instead assumed that both the protein relaxation time τp and the stretching parameter βKWW were Q-independent, i.e. we assumed that the protein dynamics is dominated by more local motions. Advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are discussed. The first approach appears to work best at higher Q-values, indicating a power law relation of the Q-dependent protein dynamics for all samples and temperatures, whereas the second approach seems to work at lower Q-values, where the expected confined diffusion of hydrogen atoms in the protein gives the assumed Q-independent relaxation time. Independent of the chosen approach we find a significant correlation between the average relaxation time of the protein and the diffusion constant (or in this case the related relaxation time) of the solvent. However, the correlation is not perfect since the average relaxation time of the protein is more strongly dependent on the total amount of solvent than the diffusion constant of the solvent itself. Thus, the average relaxation time of the protein decreases not only with increasing solvent mobility, but also with increasing solvent content.

    • Cyber-physical systems, like autonomous vehicles, are intelligent and networked. The development of such systems requires cooperation between different stakeholders. A lack of system understanding can lead to unidentified (safety relevant) security requirements (SRSR) in early engineering. This can increase product development costs or compromise system safety compliance. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) improves the system understanding by using models. Conducting workshops in the context of MBSE promotes interaction between stakeholders so that confusion regarding SRSR can be resolved already in the workshop. Using the models created, requirements can be derived in the workshop. However, established security safety approaches are not specifically designed to be used in conjunction with MBSE and requirements engineering. In this paper, we present an extension of our previously developed SAVE approach. This extension supports a team of stakeholders in workshops to derive SRSR using MBSE. We illustrate our approach with an example from the automotive domain and present an initial field study of the application of our approach, based on a 2-month student project.
