  • Nonvortical Rashba Spin Structure on a Surface with C1h Symmetry

    • A totally anisotropic peculiar Rashba-Bychkov (RB) splitting of electronic bands was found on the Tl/Si(110)-(1×1) surface with C1h symmetry by angle- and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles theoretical calculation. The constant energy contour of the upper branch of the RB split band has a warped elliptical shape centered at a k point located between Γ and the edge of the surface Brillouin zone, i.e., at a point without time-reversal symmetry. The spin-polarization vector of this state is in-plane and points almost the same direction along the whole elliptic contour. This novel nonvortical RB spin structure is confirmed as a general phenomenon originating from the C1h symmetry of the surface.

  • Are Land-Use Change Emissions in Southeast Asia Decreasing or Increasing?

    • Southeast Asia is a region known for active land-use changes (LUC) over the past 60 years; yet, how trends in net CO2 uptake and release resulting from LUC activities (net LUC flux) have changed through past decades remains uncertain. The level of uncertainty in net LUC flux from process-based models is so high that it cannot be concluded that newer estimates are necessarily more reliable than older ones. Here, we examined net LUC flux estimates of Southeast Asia for the 1980s−2010s from older and newer sets of Dynamic Global Vegetation Model simulations (TRENDY v2 and v7, respectively), and forcing data used for running those simulations, along with two book-keeping estimates (H&N and BLUE). These estimates yielded two contrasting historical LUC transitions, such that TRENDY v2 and H&N showed a transition from increased emissions from the 1980s to 1990s to declining emissions in the 2000s, while TRENDY v7 and BLUE showed the opposite transition. We found that these contrasting transitions originated in the update of LUC forcing data, which reduced the loss of forest area during the 1990s. Further evaluation of remote sensing studies, atmospheric inversions, and the history of forestry and environmental policies in Southeast Asia supported the occurrence of peak emissions in the 1990s and declining thereafter. However, whether LUC emissions continue to decline in Southeast Asia remains uncertain as key processes in recent years, such as conversion of peat forest to oil-palm plantation, are yet to be represented in the forcing data, suggesting a need for further revision.

  • Temperature structure in the Perseus cluster core observed with Hitomi

    • The present paper explains the temperature structure of X-ray emitting plasma in the core of the Perseus cluster based on 1.8-20.0 keV data obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) on board the Hitomi Observatory. A series of four observations was carried out, with a total effective exposure time of 338 ks that covered a central region of similar to 7' in diameter. SXS was operated with an energy resolution of similar to 5 eV (full width at half maximum) at 5.9 keV. Not only fine structures of K-shell lines in He-like ions, but also transitions from higher principal quantum numbers were clearly resolved from Si through Fe. That enabled us to perform temperature diagnostics using the line ratios of Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe, and to provide the first direct measurement of the excitation temperature and ionization temperature in the Perseus cluster. The observed spectrum is roughly reproduced by a single-temperature thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium, but detailed line-ratio diagnostics reveal slight deviations from this approximation. In particular, the data exhibit an apparent trend of increasing ionization temperature with the atomic mass, as well as small differences between the ionization and excitation temperatures for Fe, the only element for which both temperatures could be measured. The best-fit two-temperature models suggest a combination of 3 and 5 keV gas, which is consistent with the idea that the observed small deviations from a single-temperature approximation are due to the effects of projecting the known radial temperature gradient in the cluster core along the line of sight. A comparison with the Chandra/ACIS and the XMM-Newton/RGS results, on the other hand, suggests that additional lower-temperature components are present in the intracluster medium (ICM), but not detectable with Hitomi/SXS giving its 1.8-20 keV energy band.

    • For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1. T solenoidal field and read out with three independent Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6. GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. The efficiency for reconstructing hits, the measurement of the drift velocity, the space point resolution and the control of field inhomogeneities are presented.

    • We conducted a three-stage genetic study to identify susceptibility loci for type 2 diabetes (T2D) in east Asian populations. We followed our stage 1 meta-analysis of eight T2D genome-wide association studies (6,952 cases with T2D and 11,865 controls) with a stage 2 in silico replication analysis (5,843 cases and 4,574 controls) and a stage 3 de novo replication analysis (12,284 cases and 13,172 controls). The combined analysis identified eight new T2D loci reaching genome-wide significance, which mapped in or near GLIS3, PEPD, FITM2-R3HDML-HNF4A, KCNK16, MAEA, GCC1-PAX4, PSMD6 and ZFAND3. GLIS3, which is involved in pancreatic beta cell development and insulin gene expression, is known for its association with fasting glucose levels. The evidence of an association with T2D for PEPD and HNF4A has been shown in previous studies. KCNK16 may regulate glucose-dependent insulin secretion in the pancreas. These findings, derived from an east Asian population, provide new perspectives on the etiology of T2D.

    • The purpose of this study was to test napsin A as a diagnostic marker of metastatic lung adenocarcinoma in pleural effusions, and to compare its performance with TTF-1. Napsin A and TTF-1 reactivities were determined immunohistochemically on.formalin-fixed paraffin embedded cell blocks from 50 pleural effusion (5 mesotheliomas, 10 mesothelial proliferations, 12 pulmonary, and 23 nonpulmonary metastases). The results were evaluated separately, and correlated to the final diagnoses. Concordant results were obtained in 48150 cases. TTF-1 and Napsin A were positive in 8112 and 10112 pulmonary adenocarcinomas, respectively. Both markers were negative in 42 cases, including two lung carcinomas. Napsin reactivity was found in more than 75% of the tumor cells in 9110 positive cases, whereas TTF-1 reactivity was seen in more than 75% of the tumor cells in 218 positive cases only (P < 0.05). This makes napsin A an alternative to TTF-1 in cytological diagnosis of effusions in which tumor cells may be scanty.

  • Anisotropic Ion Mobility in an Ionic Liquid Crystal Complex of a Rodlike Mesogen Containing an Oxyethylene Moiety and Lithium Triflate

    • A liquid-crystalline (LC) complex of a rodlike mesogen containing an oxyethylene moiety and lithium triflate has been synthesized and its mesophases have been characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The ion conductive behaviour was investigated in isotropic and LC phases and related to the ionic mobility, as observed by 7Li and 19F NMR diffusometry. The observed two-dimensional ion mobilities show that planes conducting both lithium and triflate ions are formed in the smectic mesophases. The conductivity of the lithium ions is large in the smectic C phase where conductive planes rich in ethylene oxide chains exist.

    • The anisotropic diffusion of anions and cations in the columnar and isotropic phases of a fan-shaped imidazolium hexafluorophosphate salt is measured by H-1 and F-19 diffusion NMR experiments. The macroscopic orientation of the columnar phase is investigated by H-2 NMR spectroscopy. We find that the anions, confined by the cations, diffuse faster than the cations along the columns but slowly across them, which exemplifies the ion channel model of these materials. The cations and anions are dissociated in the columnar phase but are paired or clustered in the isotropic phase.

    • A production technique with the capacity to significantly improve the mechanical properties of powder metallurgy (PM) parts is high-velocity compaction (HVC). To extend the usage of the HVC method, detailed knowledge of the HVC process is important. To facilitate the development of production processes, numerical simulations can be utilised. In the development of high-precision simulation models, constitutive data of HVC specimens at high strain rates are required. In this study, the dynamic compressive properties of cylindrical specimens made by HVC were measured using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (Kolsky bar) assembly. For this technique, a specimen is placed between two elastic bars. The impact loading is achieved by a projectile accelerating inside an air gun, which impacts the end of the input bar and generates elastic-wave propagation.The powder material used for the experiments is a press-ready iron-based premix. Among specimens made by HVC and conventional compaction (CC), the effects of the specimen density and the strain rate on the compressive properties, such as failure stress, Young´s modulus and failure behaviour, are investigated. During dynamic compression, the failure behaviour of the specimens was also recorded using a high-speed video camera. The difference in the mechanical behaviour between HVC-pressed specimens and conventionally pressed specimens are also investigated. The stress–strain curves of HVC-pressed specimens are identical to those of conventionally pressed specimens, but the failure behaviour differs are concluded.A well-established numerical method for forming simulations also conducted for powder compaction is the finite element method (FEM). The impact loading of the powder is modelled and simulated using nonlinear three-dimensional FEM. To model the impact process, a constitutive relation for the powder behaviour is proposed, taking into account the strain rate and density variations. To capture the global response caused by cracking during impact, a damage model is implemented. The numerical results in terms of the stress and strain history in the specimen during impact are compared with the experimental measurements. In conclusion, the proposed material model captures the increase in the yield stress due to the higher strain rates and the decrease in stress due to cracking.
