  • Migration: Editorial Introduction
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: PARSE Journal. - 2002-0953. ; :10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The PARSE journal issue on Migration inquires into the embodied, affective, performative, material, visual, and spatial politics of cross-border human mobilities, through arts/design as well as migration scholars. The journal issue is an encounter between artist and migration scholars as we believe that both address and struggle with a crisis of representation when it comes to migration, which should not be confused with over-simplified discourse regarding a “crisis” of borders and migration.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Vulnerability in Scandinavian Art and Culture. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030373818 - 9783030373849 - 9783030373825 ; , s. 247-266
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, Björgvinsson and Keshavarz challenge the claims of Scandinavian participatory design in initiating bottom-up change, democratic engagement and overcoming the vulnerabilities of marginal groups. By following its trajectory from its engagement with trade unions in the 1970s to local communities in the 2000s and beyond, the chapter problematizes participatory design’s presuppositions in relation to vulnerabilities associated with different groups. Through analysing a participatory design project where Björgvinsson was involved, the authors show how the call to and the process of participation always happen in an already partitioned world. As such, they argue participation does not necessarily give equal voices to participating parts, as frequently claimed but, rather, produce new parts, ignore certain other parts and lift up particular parts depending on the power relations involved. The chapter concludes that participatory methods not only generate less recognized vulnerabilities, but also ignore the resistance made by vulnerable groups against uneven participation.

  • Decolonzing Design - : Special Issue for the journal Design and Culture
  • 2018
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After centuries of subaltern and decades of transdisciplinary gestation, decolonial thinking has finally been incorporated into studies of materiality and – though belatedly – cohered as a question that can be posed directly both to and within the field of Design Studies. Some of the questions that come to mind in this formative moment for decolonial thinking in/and/as design include:• What does the endeavor of decolonizing design mean?• What does it mean for design to be thought of in relation to decoloniality and for decoloniality to be thought of in relation to design?• How are ideas and practices of decolonizing design already emerging?• What are its implications within and beyond the field of Design Studies? These questions have brought us – the members of the Decolonising Design (DD) project and research collective – together and have influenced our efforts to build an online platform that supports and promotes thinking by similarly interested design scholars.

  • Time Warps : Refugees and the Experience of Waiting in Rural Sweden
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores the ways in which refugees’ experience of time is warped when they come to Sweden. It is based on fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in Avesta, a small municipality in rural Sweden.Refugee reception and immigration control in Sweden is characterized by humanitarian ideals that exist in tension with practices and policies aiming to restrict immigration in the name of security and stability. Each chapter of this thesis documents a different combination of these ideals and concerns, examining how they generate particular configurations of waiting. For many refugees in Sweden, everyday life is characterized by waiting—waiting to have their asylum application processed; to receive a residence permit, which grants them the right to work; to be reunited with their families to find a place in Swedish society. This process often takes several years, during which the conditions for receiving residence permit may suddenly change or be made more difficult. The thesis is a contribution to the recent “temporal turn” in migration studies through its focus on waiting as a productive phenomenon in vulnerable circumstances. The increased presence of refugees has given rise to anti-immigrant sentiments in Sweden, but it has also generated welcoming, compassionate responses. By addressing not only how refugees cope with living in a continual state of waiting under precarious conditions, but also how bureacracies, civil societies, and individuals respond to this waiting, the thesis discusses the sociological and ethical implications of refugees’ waiting. Time Warps demonstrates the importance of unpacking combinations of humanitarianism and securitarianism when developing a deepened understanding of refugees experience of waiting in rural Sweden.
