  • Mental Health and Coping Strategies among University Staff during the COVID-19 Pandemic : A Cross-Sectional Analysis from Saudi Arabia

    • This study examined psychological health and coping strategies among faculty and staff at a Saudi Arabian university. A web-based self-administered survey was used to assess probable anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and coping strategies by using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), and Brief-COPE scale, respectively. Of 502 participants (mean age 36.04 +/- 10.32 years, male: 66.3%), 24.1% (GAD-7 >= 10) had probable anxiety. Anxiety score was significantly higher in females (p < 0.001), those with a history of COVID-19 infection (p = 0.036), and participants with less work experience (p = 0.019). Approximately 40% of participants met the criteria of probable depression, with females (p < 0.001) and participants with less experience having more depressive symptoms. Around one-fourth (27.7%) of study participants indicated probable PTSD (score +/- 33), with higher symptoms in females (p <0.001), less experienced staff (p < 0.00 1), and academic staff (p = 0.006). Correlation analysis indicated a significant positive correlation between anxiety and depression (r = 0.844, p < 0.001), anxiety and PTSD (r = 0.650, p < 0.001), and depression and PTSD (r = 0.676, p < 0.001). Active coping, religious/spiritual coping, and acceptance were common coping strategies, while substance use was the least adopted coping method among the study participants. This study indicated a high prevalence of probable psychological ailments among university staff.

  • Evaluation of Conspiracy Beliefs, Vaccine Hesitancy, and Willingness to Pay towards COVID-19 Vaccines in Six Countries from Asian and African Regions : A Large Multinational Analysis

    • Vaccination protects people from serious illness and associated complications. Conspiracy theories and misinformation on vaccines have been rampant during the COVID-19 pandemic and are considered significant drivers of vaccine hesitancy. Since vaccine hesitancy can undermine efforts to immunize the population against COVID-19 and interferes with the vaccination rate, this study aimed to ascertain the COVID-19-vaccine-related conspiracy beliefs, vaccine hesitancy, views regarding vaccine mandates, and willingness to pay for vaccines among the general population. A web-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted (April-August 2021) among the adult population in six countries (Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, India, Malaysia, Sudan, and Egypt). Participants were recruited using an exponential, non-discriminate snowball sampling method. A validated self-completed electronic questionnaire was used for the data collection. All the participants responded to questions on various domains of the study instrument, including conspiracy beliefs, vaccine hesitancy, and willingness to pay. The responses were scored according to predefined criteria and stratified into various groups. All data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 22. A total of 2481 responses were included in the study (Pakistan 24.1%, Saudi Arabia 19.5%, India 11.6%, Malaysia 8.1%, Sudan 19.3%, and Egypt 17.3%). There was a preponderance of participants <= 40 years old (18-25 years: 55.8%, 26-40 years: 28.5%) and females (57.1%). The average score of the COVID-19 vaccine conspiracy belief scale (C19V-CBS) was 2.30 +/- 2.12 (median 2; range 0-7). Our analysis showed that 30% of the respondents were found to achieve the ideal score of zero, indicating no conspiracy belief. The mean score of the COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy scale (C19V-HS) was 25.93 +/- 8.11 (range: 10-50). The majority (45.7%) had C19V-HA scores of 21-30 and nearly 28% achieved a score greater than 30, indicating a higher degree of hesitancy. There was a significant positive correlation between conspiracy beliefs and vaccine hesitancy (Spearman's rho = 0.547, p < 0.001). Half of the study population were against the vaccine mandate. Respondents in favor of governmental enforcement of COVID-19 vaccines had significantly (p < 0.001) lower scores on the C19V-CBS and C19V-HS scale. Nearly 52% reported that they would only take vaccine if it were free, and only 24% were willing to pay for COVID-19 vaccines. A high prevalence of conspiracy beliefs and vaccine hesitancy was observed in the targeted countries. Our findings highlight the dire need for aggressive measures to counter the conspiracy beliefs and factors underlying this vaccine hesitancy.

  • Trajectory of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy post-vaccination and public's intention to take booster vaccines : A cross-sectional analysis

    • Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is not a new phenomenon in Pakistan and is regarded as one of the primary causes of unsatisfactory vaccination campaigns. This study determined post-vaccination COVID-19 VH, factors influencing COVID-19 vaccine uptake, and public's intent to receive booster vaccinations. A cross-sectional study was conducted among adult population of Lahore, Pakistan. Participants were recruited via convenience sampling between March and May 2022. SPSS version 22 was used for the data analysis. A total of 650 participants were included in the study (age = 28.1 & PLUSMN; 9.7 years; male-to-female ratio nearly 1: 1). The majority of participants received Sinopharm followed by Sinovac vaccine. The top three reasons of vaccine uptake were "only vaccinated individuals are allowed at the workplace, and educational institutes" (Relative importance index (RII) = 0.749), "only vaccinated people are allowed to go to markets, malls and other public places" (RII = 0.746), and "protect myself from the infection" (RII = 0.742). The mean COVID-19 VH score was 24.5 & PLUSMN; 6.2 (95% CI 23.9-24.9), with not being pro-vaccines and poor economic status were the significant predictors of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among immunized individuals (p < .05). Acceptance of booster vaccines was negatively associated with younger age and a lower level of education. Furthermore, being pro-vaccine was associated with a greater likelihood of accepting booster vaccines (p = .001). The Pakistani public continues to express VH toward COVID-19 vaccines. Therefore, aggressive measures must be taken to combat the community factors that contribute to it.

    • In cyber crimes, attackers are becoming more inventive with their exploits and use more sophisticated techniques to bypass the deployed security system. These attacks are targeted and are commonly referred as Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs). The currently available techniques to tackle these attacks are mostly reactive and signature based. Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), a proactive approach is the best solution. However, the major problem with SIEM is tackling huge amount of data in real time that makes it a time consuming and tedious task for security analyst. The use of threat intelligence caters to such issue by prioritizing the level of threat. In this paper, we assign risk score and confidence value to each feed generated at our product “T-Eye platform”. On the basis of these values, we assign a severity score to each feed type. Severity score assigns a level to the threat means prioritize the threat. The results, we achieved for prioritizing the threat is more apparent and accurate. In addition, we optimize the rules of IBM-Q-Radar by using threat feeds generated at T-Eye platform. Furthermore, a huge amount of false positive alarms generated at IBM Q-Radar is reduced to a certain extent.

    • Thanks to the growing interests of metal oxide sensors in environmental and industrial uses, this study presents the sensing mechanism of methane gas (CH4) on recently synthesized two-dimensional form of ZnO, ZnO nano sheets (ZnO-NS). The adsorption energy of CH4 on pristine ZnO-NS, calculated by means of van derWaals corrected first-principles calculations, is found to be insufficient restricting its application as an efficient nano sensor. However, the creation of (O/Zn) vacancies and the substitution of foreign dopants into ZnO-NS considerably intensify the binding energy of CH4. Through a comprehensive energetic analysis, it is observed that among all the substituents, boron (B), sulphur (S) and gallium (Ga) improves the binding of CH4 to 2.75, 6.1 and 7.5 times respectively than its values on pristine ZnO-NS. In addition to the CH4 binding energies falling ideally between physisorption and chemisorption range, a prominent variation in the electronic properties before and after CH4 exposure indicates the promise of substituted Zn-NS as a useful nano sensors.

  • Designing Functionally Substituted Pyridine-Carbohydrazides for Potent Antibacterial and Devouring Antifungal Effect on Multidrug Resistant (MDR) Strains

    • The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens and the gradual depletion of available antibiotics have exacerbated the need for novel antimicrobial agents with minimal toxicity. Herein, we report functionally substituted pyridine carbohydrazide with remarkable antimicrobial effect on multi-drug resistant strains. In the series, compound 6 had potent activity against four MDR strains of Candida spp., with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values being in the range of 16-24 mu g/mL and percentage inhibition up to 92.57%, which was exceptional when compared to broad-spectrum antifungal drug fluconazole (MIC = 20 mu g/mL, 81.88% inhibition). Substitution of the octyl chain in 6 with a shorter butyl chain resulted in a significant anti-bacterial effect of 4 against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), the MIC value being 2-fold superior to the standard combination of ampicillin/cloxacillin. Time-kill kinetics assays were used to discern the efficacy and pharmacodynamics of the potent compounds. Further, hemolysis tests confirmed that both compounds had better safety profiles than the standard drugs. Besides, molecular docking simulations were used to further explore their mode of interaction with target proteins. Overall results suggest that these compounds have the potential to become promising antimicrobial drugs against MDR strains.

    • Increasing engine power to volume density is under investigation and being analysed extensively. Turbocharger, which is used to boost volumetric efficiency, also raises cylinder temperature and pressure, thus resulting in thermal distortions and reducing clearances in tribo-contacts, thereby compromising engine life. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have shown potential to provide remedies to reduce heat losses, hazardous emissions, and heat flow toward the piston skirt in an internal combustion engine. In this study, a detailed thermo-mechanical analysis was performed for a diesel engine piston with a novel yttrium barium zirconate (YBZ) coating and then compared with other TBCs with varying thicknesses. The results revealed a notable decrease in piston substrate surface temperature when coated with various TBCs, with YBZ coating demonstrating superior performance over others. The 0.2 mm coating of YBZ-coated piston exhibited significant reductions of 15% and 10.3% in temperature and thermal stress respectively, thus enhancing piston durability. The better performance of the novel YBZ coating could be attributed to its stable thermal and elastic properties and lower thermal conductivity than other TBC materials. YBZ coating provides a promising solution to improve engine efficiency while extending engine life, making it an attractive option for the automotive industry.

  • Love or Hate? : Share or Split? Privacy-Preserving Training Using Split Learning and Homomorphic Encryption

    • Split learning (SL) is a new collaborative learning technique that allows participants, e.g. a client and a server, to train machine learning models without the client sharing raw data. In this setting, the client initially applies its part of the machine learning model on the raw data to generate activation maps and then sends them to the server to continue the training process. Previous works in the field demonstrated that reconstructing activation maps could result in privacy leakage of client data. In addition to that, existing mitigation techniques that overcome the privacy leakage of SL prove to be significantly worse in terms of accuracy. In this paper, we improve upon previous works by constructing a protocol based on U-shaped SL that can operate on homomorphically encrypted data. More precisely, in our approach, the client applies homomorphic encryption on the activation maps before sending them to the server, thus protecting user privacy. This is an important improvement that reduces privacy leakage in comparison to other SL-based works. Finally, our results show that, with the optimum set of parameters, training with HE data in the U-shaped SL setting only reduces accuracy by 2.65% compared to training on plaintext. In addition, raw training data privacy is preserved.
