  • Perceptions and Experiences of Caregivers on Child Injuries: A Qualitative Study from Central India
  • 2022
  • In: Journal of prevention (2022). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2731-5541 .- 2731-5533. ; 43:4, s. 549-565
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • To explore caregivers’ perceptions of childhood injuries in the rural and urban areas of India, with a focus on causes, consequences, prevention, and treatment. We conducted eight focus group discussions with fifty female caregivers in rural and urban areas of Ujjain in Central India and used thematic content analysis. The caregivers identified how children injured themselves through falls, road traffic injuries, metallic nails and tool injuries, ingestions of foreign objects and poisons, burns, drowning, and suffocation. The reported consequences of injuries ranged from pain, infections, scar formation, phobia, stigma, and emotional stress to complications like physical disability, loss of eyesight, head injury, paralysis, and even death. Many caregivers blamed children and their mischievousness for the injuries and failed to realise/acknowledge the role of better supervision and environmental modifications in injury prevention. Caregivers used several first aid methods to respond to injuries. These included applying pressure to stop bleeding during fall and road traffic injuries, inducing vomiting by giving the poison victims saltwater to drink, and tobacco leaves to chew. In addition, some caregivers resorted to using coconut oil and toothpaste on burnt skin and giving back blows for choking. Caregivers in communities had experiences of different types of child injuries. Further education on need for better supervision, relevant environmental modification and appropriate first aid treatment of various injuries is required.

  • Expression patterns of two new members of the Semaphorin family in Drosophila suggest early functions during embryogenesis
  • 2000
  • In: Mechanisms of Development. - 0925-4773. ; 91:08-01-02, s. 393-397
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report the sequence and expression analysis of two new Drosophila members of the Semaphorin family. Both proteins show the presence of Semaphorin domains and transmembrane domains. Both genes are expressed maternally and in embryos, and reveal distinct expression patterns much earlier than the onset of neurogenesis. We also present an overview of the domain structure of all so far known semaphorins in Drosophila. Furthermore, we compared all Drosophila and C. elegans Semaphorins and discuss them in the light of their evolution.

  • Hardening of the soft phonon in bulk SrTiO3 interfaced with LaAlO3 and SrRuO3
  • 2016
  • In: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 93:22
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The low-temperature softening of the TO1 phonon of SrTiO3 (STO), which determines its incipient ferroelectricity, is known to be partially hindered either in the bulk under strong electric fields, or in thin STO films. Here we show, by terahertz (THz) reflectivity measurements, that a similar effect is produced in bulk STO and at zero static field by ultrathin metallic films on its surface, like a 10-nm-thick film of SrRuO3 (SRO), or the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) present at the interface with LaAlO3. In SRO/STO, the observed hardening is well explained by the depolarizing action of the SRO free electrons which follow adiabatically the ion motion. In LAO/STO, a weaker TO1 hardening could be detected by patterning the 2DES in the form of microstripes and using a polarized THz field parallel (E-) or orthogonal (E-) to the stripes. At 10 K, when TO1 is excited together with the free electrons by E-, its absorbance is harder by about 7 cm-1 than that measured when TO1 is coupled to the plasmon-polariton confined within the stripes, being excited by E-.
