  • Heat exchanger network optimisation considering different shell-side flow arrangements
  • 2022
  • In: Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0360-5442. ; 261
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS) is an effective tool for heat recovery in chemical and petrochemical industries. This study aims to show a method for HENS with the consideration of different shell-side flow arrangements in shell-and-tube heat exchangers. The proposed MINLP model is modified from the stage-wise superstructure model, incorporating newly developed correlations for shell-side pressure drop calculation for the helical baffle. The objective is to minimise the total annual cost (TAC) with a trade-off between the cost of different shell-side heat exchangers, utility cost, and pumping cost. The selection of baffle design is decided by the saved pumping cost and the increased area cost. The proposed model is tested from different points of view: with/without utility constraints and different statuses of the streams. Three case studies are presented and compared with the results from the literature. The proposed method with different shell-side baffles can reduce the heat transfer area and pressure drop. For fixed utility consumptions, the TAC in a case study is decreased by 8.9% with mixed baffle types. Although the unit per area cost of the helical baffle is higher than the segmental baffle, the increased investment cost could be compensated by the reduced operation cost, especially for plants with high viscosity streams and long-term cost-saving.

  • Heat exchanger network synthesis considering detailed thermal-hydraulic performance : Methods and perspectives
  • 2022
  • In: Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 1364-0321. ; 168
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Heat exchanger network synthesis is an essential optimisation tool for Process Integration, particularly in energy-intensive industries. Proper design or retrofit of heat exchanger network can enable energy conservation, efficiency improvement, and process debottlenecking. Many earlier pieces of research have focused on the impact of the network structure and process features such as network topology, temperature intervals, continuous/batch processes, and so on. As the major device in heat exchanger networks, heat exchangers research has always been a hot topic. However, the individual heat exchanger research is different from the number of heat exchangers in a network. Various performance aspects of the heat exchangers, e.g., pressure drop, fouling, and thermal performance, could influence the whole network and the passive responses between each heat exchanger. Besides, integrating those aspects of individual heat exchangers into the network synthesis is still an open problem, especially for cases that demand simultaneous optimisations. This work presents a thorough assessment of research into those aspects in heat exchanger networks, as well as the state-of-the-art of current approaches for heat exchanger networks optimisation that take heat exchanger performance into account. The essential coupling among fouling, pressure drop and thermal design is explored, and the nexus between them and the heat exchanger network is analysed. Researchers will benefit from this overview of heat exchanger network synthesis retrofitting methods and applications.

  • Oil refinery and water pollution in the context of sustainable development : Developing and developed countries
  • 2021
  • In: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper is an attempt to evaluate the impact of the oil refinery industry on water resources worldwide from the point of view of sustainable development (SD). The local laws, reports from the industry and environmental agencies, conditions of the final disposal system were analysed. Key aspects, such as existing approaches for treatment systems, quality of treated wastewater, and ways to assure the safety of them were compared. The comparison between industrialised (represented by the USA and EU) and developing countries (Kazakhstan used as an example) shows that several obstacles, such as loopholes in legislation, historical contamination, and miscommunicating between stakeholders, exist, despite the formal promotion of the SD concept. That policy should be implemented based on the relevant scientific investigation through the possibility of integrating the respective technological development, an adequate system of environmental impact assessment, and fair operational monitoring.

  • Sustainable Water Use in Industry—Reasons, Challenges, Response of Kazakhstan
  • 2023
  • In: Circular Economy and Sustainability. - 2730-597X. ; 3, s. 2267-2283
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Industrial development poses significant challenges to water resource management, both in terms of quality and quantity. In response to these challenges, the concept of sustainable water use has been proposed as a means of addressing these issues. However, this concept is not yet widely adopted in developing countries, particularly in Kazakhstan. This paper examines the extent to which water use is sustainable on the example of the oil refinery sector in Kazakhstan. The investigation revealed a two-fold problem: the discharge of contaminated wastewater into the environment, which poses a risk of contamination transport, and the irrational use of water within the refinery. These issues are rooted in low water fees, low penalties for pollution and the gaps in legislation that allow for high maximum allowable concentrations of pollutants in discharges. As a result, toxic contaminants, such as petroleum hydrocarbons, are present in high concentrations exceeding permissible limits in groundwater up to 6 km away from the point of wastewater discharge. Based on the findings of the environmental impact assessments carried out in the sector, the authors propose a response that involves revising and implementing suitable legislative standards with requirements for transparent practices for environmental impact assessment and new efficient environmental monitoring programs to prevent water pollution. These measures have been adopted in the new Ecological Code and require proper control to ensure their effective implementation. However, the perspective of implementing efficient water-saving techniques and water integration is not yet widely visible and needs to be considered in order to achieve the sustainable water use in the industry.
