Heart transplantation across the antibodies against HLA and ABO

- We have intentionally performed heart transplantation in a 5-year-old child, despite the most unfavourable risk factors for patient survival; the presence of high level of antibodies against donor's human leucocyte antigen (HLA) class I/II and blood group antigens. Pretransplant treatment by mycophenolate mofetil, prednisolone, tacrolimus, intravenous immunoglobulin, rituximab, protein-A immunoadsorption (IA) and plasma exchange reduced antibody titres against the donor's lymphocytes from 128 to 16 and against the donor's blood group antigen from 256 to 0. The patient was urgently transplanted with a heart from an ABO incompatible donor (A(1) to O). A standard triple-drug immunosuppressive protocol was used. No hyperacute rejection was seen. Antibodies against the donor's HLA antigens remained at a low level despite three acute rejections. Rising anti-A(1) blood group antibodies preceded the second rejection and were reduced by two blood group-specific IAs and remained at a low level. The patient is doing well despite the persistence of donor-reactive antibodies.

- A 21-year-old woman with beta-thalassemia major (beta-TM) and GH deficiency developed end-stage heart failure, New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class IV, within 3 months after withdrawal of recombinant human growth hormone (GH). A myocardial biopsy excluded myocarditis and showed moderate iron deposit in the heart. Before her admission, intensified treatments with digoxin, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, diuretics and extra chelation therapy (desferrioxamine (DFO)) had not improved her progressive heart failure. At admission, GH was reinstituted together with intensified treatment of cardiac drugs and low doses of DFO, and her heart failure reversed. Four months later, NYHA functional class II was reached and within 1 year her cardiac function was normalised. We suggest that GH deficiency due to iron-induced damage to the hypothalamic-pituitary axis can contribute to heart failure in adult patients with beta-TM.

Kommissionens övergripande uppdrag är att lämna förslag som långsiktigt ökar den ekonomiska jämlik-heten och möjligheterna till social rörlighet i samhället och som bidrar till ökad jämlikhet och integration. Bland annat ska kommis-sionen ”föreslå åtgärder som kan bidra till att utjämna skillnader i uppväxtvillkor samt i möjligheter till god utbildning”.

- Nordiskt forskarsymposium om undervisningen i naturvetenskap (NFSUN) anordnas 2011 för tionde gången. Den första konferensen hölls i Ebeltoft i Danmark 1984 och därefter har den genomförts vart tredje år. Värdskapet har alternerat mellan de nordiska länderna och nu är konferensen förlagd till Linköping i Sverige. Symposiet är ett viktigt forum för att presentera och diskutera forskningsresultat inom nordisk naturvetenskaplig utbildning. Där förenas forskning och utvecklingsarbete, och forskare och lärare från förskola, grundskola, gymnasium och universitet välkomnas att deltaga. Symposiet fungerar både som en mötesplats och en plattform för etablering av nätverk inom naturvetenskaplig forskning.

Phylogenetic Studies in the Lamiales with Special Focus on Scrophulariaceae and Stilbaceae

- This thesis deals with plants from the flowering plant order Lamiales, and especially the two families Scrophulariaceae and Stilbaceae. Both families have their main geographical distribution in southern Africa. The thesis presents phylogenies of Scrophulariaceae s. lat. that can be used as a framework both for a future formal classification of the Scrophulariaceae and of allied taxa. A new circumscription of the tribe Manuleeae of Scrophulariaceae is presented including also genera earlier placed in the tribe Selagineae (sometimes recognised as a family of its own, Selaginaceae). Manuleeae now consists of the genera: Barthlottia, Chaenostoma, Chenopodiopsis, Dischisma, Glekia, Globulariopsis, Glumicalyx, Gosela, Hebenstretia, Jamesbrittenia, Limosella, Lyperia, Manulea, Manuleopsis, Melanospermum, Phyllopodium, Polycarena, Pseudoselago, Reyemeia, Selago, Strobilopsis, Sutera, Tetraselago, Trieenea and Zaluzianskya. The genera Sutera and Selago are given new circumscriptions; Sutera is divided into two genera, Sutera and Chaenostoma. Selago is circumscribed to contain also taxa that formerly have been placed in Microdon and Cromidon. A new circumscription and infrafamiliar classification of the family Stilbaceae is also presented. Stilbaceae will consist of the three tribes: Bowkerieae, consisting of the genera Anastrabe, Bowkeria and Ixianthes; Hallerieae, consisting of Charadrophila and Halleria; and Stilbeae, consisting of Nuxia and Stilbe. Furthermore, the genera Campylostachys, Euthystachys, Kogelbergia and Retzia are all included in the genus Stilbe. The results in the thesis are based on parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic inferences of DNA sequence data. Further, morphological characters are analysed and compared to the molecular phylogenies.
