    • [Context] Systematic Literature Reviews (SLRs) have been adopted by the Software Engineering (SE) community for approximately 15 years to provide meaningful summaries of evidence on several topics. Many of these SLRs are now potentially outdated, and there are no systematic proposals on when to update SLRs in SE. [Objective] The goal of this paper is to provide recommendations on when to update SLRs in SE. [Method] We evaluated, using a three-step approach, a third-party decision framework (3PDF) employed in other fields, to decide whether SLRs need updating. First, we conducted a literature review of SLR updates in SE and contacted the authors to obtain their feedback relating to the usefulness of the 3PDF within the context of SLR updates in SE. Second, we used these authors’ feedback to see whether the framework needed any adaptation; none was suggested. Third, we applied the 3PDF to the SLR updates identified in our literature review. [Results] The 3PDF showed that 14 of the 20 SLRs did not need updating. This supports the use of a decision support mechanism (such as the 3PDF) to help the SE community decide when to update SLRs. [Conclusions] We put forward that the 3PDF should be adopted by the SE community to keep relevant evidence up to date and to avoid wasting effort with unnecessary updates. © 2020

    • The links between asthma and rhinitis are well characterized. The Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines stress the importance of these links and provide guidance for their prevention and treatment. Despite effective treatments being available, too few patients receive appropriate medical care for both diseases. Most patients with rhinitis and asthma consult primary care physicians and therefore these physicians are encouraged to understand and use ARIA guidelines. Patients should also be informed about these guidelines to raise their awareness of optimal care and increase control of the two related diseases. To apply these guidelines, clinicians and patients need to understand how and why the recommendations were made. The goal of the ARIA guidelines is to provide recommendations about the best management options for most patients in most situations. These recommendations should be based on the best available evidence. Making recommendations requires the assessment of the quality of available evidence, deciding on the balance between benefits and downsides, consideration of patients’ values and preferences, and, if applicable, resource implications. Guidelines must be updated as new management options become available or important new evidence emerges. Transparent reporting of guidelines facilitates understanding and acceptance, but implementation strategies need to be improved.

    • Standard indirect learning architecture (ILA) based methods for estimating the parameters in digital pre-distortion produce biased estimates of the parameters due to noise. This paper proposes using a direct model of the power amplifier to generate a noise-free estimate of the output signal and subsequently use this estimated signal to extract the parameters of the pre-distorter using the ILA. Measurement results shows that this technique improves the performance of the pre-distorter for all signal-to-noise ratios, but especially in the range of 20-30 dB signal-to-noise ratio.

    • Dependent data arise frequently in applied research and several approaches to adjusting for the dependence among observations have been proposed in quantile regression. Cluster bootstrap is generally inefficient and computationally demanding, especially when the number of clusters is large. When the primary interest is on marginal quantiles, estimating equations have been proposed that estimate a working correlation matrix from the regression residuals’ sign. However, the Pearson’s correlation coefficient is an inadequate measure of dependence between binary variables because its range depends on their marginal probabilities. Instead, we propose to model the working correlation matrix through odds ratios. Different working structures can be easily estimated by suitable logistic regression models. These structures can be parametrized to depend on covariates and clusters. Simulations show that the proposed estimator has similar behavior to that of generalized estimating equations applied to regression for the mean. We study marginal quantiles of cognitive behavior with data from a randomized trial for treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder.

    • Long-term birth cohort studies are essential to understanding the life course and childhood predictors of allergy and the complex interplay between genes and the environment (including lifestyle and socioeconomic determinants). Over 100 cohorts focusing on asthma and allergy have been initiated in the world over the past 30 years. Since 2004, several research initiatives funded under the EU Framework Program for Research and Technological Development FP6-FP7 have attempted to identify, compare, and evaluate pooling data from existing European birth cohorts (GA(2)LEN: Global Allergy and European Network, FP6; ENRIECO: Environmental Health Risks in European Birth Cohorts, FP7; CHICOS: Developing a Child Cohort Research Strategy for Europe, FP7; MeDALL: Mechanisms of the Development of ALLergy, FP7). However, there is a general lack of knowledge about these initiatives and their potentials. The aim of this paper is to review current and past EU-funded projects in order to make a summary of their goals and achievements and to suggest future research needs of these European birth cohort networks.
