  • What is the Market for Chinese Volvos? - Quality and Reliability Perceptions within the Context of Technology Transfer
  • 2013
  • In: Zawislak, P A and Hosni Y (Eds) “Science, Technology and Innovation in the Emerging Markets Economy”, Proceedings of 22nd International Conference of the International Association for Management of Technology. ; , s. Paper 1569687937-
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Impressions about the quality and reliability of products can depend as much on perceptions concerning brand and country of origin (quality cues) as on the evidenceof hard data regarding performance and failure (quality attributes). Although the distinction between quality cues and quality attributes is a traditional area of researchin marketing, and more specifically in the study of customer behaviour and preferences, it has not previously been investigated within the context of international technology transfer. In this paper we first use research in the machine tool sector to illustrate this country-of origin effect formation process based on surveys among UK and Chinese companies with experience of technology transfer and use of end-products. We then explore the implications for Volvo as an established Western automotive brand that has been acquired by the Chinese company Geely Automobile Holdings, and which is transferring design andmanufacturing technology to enable production of new models in China as well as Europe. This uses a survey in Taiwan to establish opinions about Swedish-made and Chinese-made Volvos across a range of purchasing factors. The results reveal some important differences of opinion among nearly all these various factors.

  • Ecological Modernization Theory (EMT): Antecedents and Successors
  • 2021
  • In: Indonesian Journal of Sustainability Accounting and Management. - 2597-6222 .- 2597-6214. ; 5:2, s. 324-338
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study consolidates the state of academic research on the Ecological Modernization Theory (EMT). The EMT starts from a sociological perspective and enters into a series of political and economic factors that are considered crucial under the aegis of processes and practices. EM predicts that under political, economic, and technological conditions, competition among capitalists can be redirected to achieve eco-efficiency of pollution prevention. Based on a literature review from across 26 years, the study presents an overview of the evolution of the theme, background, and future perspectives. Using the databases Scopus, Web of Science, and Science Direct, a sample of 291 studies was mapped, which were read in full. Content analysis was conducted to abstract the current panorama of the theory of ecological modernization and to infer trends of the progress of the subject. The originality/value of this study is that we integrate diverse research perspectives into a comprehensive multidimensional structure of EM, with the purpose of analyzing the antecedents, artifacts associated with theory, method, types of studies developed, constructs explored together with the theory of EM and subcategories context, relevant stakeholders, technological innovations, and public policies. As future perspectives for studies, we suggest aligning EMT with circular economy, industry 4.0, and management information systems based on big data.

  • The Competitiveness of Chinese Manufacturing Beyond the Lewis Turning Point: The Role of Explorative Technology Transfer
  • 2013
  • In: Wu X, Shi Y, Du J and Guo B (Eds) “High Performance Manufacturing - Global Perspective”, Proceedings of the Ninth International Symposium on Global Manufacturing and China, Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge, UK.. - 9781902546186 ; , s. 160-164
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper considers two case studies of acquisition of Western manufacturing businesses by Chinese firms. It concludes that the underlying technology transfers are significantly different from contractual forms of technology transfers with an exploitation focus. The limited knowledge that was gained through prior technology transfers agreements led Chinese manufacturers to occupy unrewarding positions in their home market, with no prospect for growth and faced with the risk of competitive decline when faced with rising labour cost (i.e. with the advent of the so-called “Lewis turning point”). In order to break out from this 'middle income trap' the case firms usedacquisitions and explorative forms of technology transferthat allow them to move away from their constrained strategic positions and to truly compete with other globalfirms both at home and abroad.
