  • Enhanced mechanical and gas barrier performance of plasticized cellulose nanofibril films
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - : De Gruyter Open Ltd. - 0283-2631 .- 2000-0669. ; 37:1, s. 138-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) are mixed with plasticizers; sorbitol and glycerol, through high-pressure homogenization to prepare multifunctional biohybrid films. The resulting plasticized films obtained after solvent evaporation are strong, flexible and demonstrate superior toughness and optical transparency. The oxygen barrier properties of the biohybrid films outperform commercial packaging materials. The sorbitol-plasticized CNF films possess excellent oxygen barrier properties, 0.34 cm3·μm/m2·day·kPa at 50 % relative humidity, while significantly enhancing the toughness and fracture strength of the films. CNF films plasticized by 20 wt.% of sorbitol and glycerol could before rupture, be strained to about 9 % and 12 %, respectively. The toughness of the plasticized films increased by ca. 300 % compared to the pristine CNF film. Furthermore, the water vapor barrier properties of the biohybrid films were also preserved by the addition of sorbitol. CNF films plasticized with sorbitol was demonstrated to simultaneously enhance fracture toughness, work of fracture, softening behavior while preserving gas barrier properties. Highly favorable thermomechanical characteristics were found with CNF/sorbitol combinations and motivate further work on this material system, for instance as a thermoformable matrix in biocomposite materials. The unique combination of excellent oxygen barrier behavior, formability and optical transparency suggest the potential of these CNF-based films as an alternative in flexible packaging of oxygen sensitive devices like thin-film transistors or organic light-emitting diode displays, gas storage applications and as barrier coatings/laminations in packaging applications, including free-standing films as aluminium-replacement in liquid board and primary packaging, as replacement for polyethylene (PE) in wrapping paper, e. g. sweats and confectionary.

  • Praktiker som gör skillnad : Om den verb-inriktade metoden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Historisk Tidskrift. - 0345-469X .- 2002-4827. ; 133:3, s. 335-354
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the so-called verb-oriented method and its role in the research project Gender and Work in early modern Sweden (GaW), which is based at Uppsala University. It provides a presentation of the GaW-database, which has been designed to allow analysis according to the verb-method. Finally, the article points out that this method can be combined with a number of different theoretical approaches as long as the focus is on practices. It is therefore compatible with the approaches of e.g., Judith Butler, Michel de Certeau, and Amartya Sen. Work is defined as "time-use with the purpose of making a living" and the article discusses why data on time-use, or actual work activities, are better suited for research into early modern Swedish working life than other types of data. It shows that activities are usually described in the sources by verb-phrases, and explains how and from what sources verb-phrases are collected and analyzed within the project. In order to allow for generalizations the verb-method presupposes large amounts of data. This is the rationale for the GaW-database, which at present includes around 5000 verb-phrases and 75000 data posts.

  • Addition of carboxymethylcellulose to the kraft cook
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0283-2631 .- 2000-0669. ; 19:2, s. 200-207
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The physical attachment of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) onto kraft pulps during cooking and the effects of subsequent bleaching in an OD(EOP)DD sequence were investigated. Two CMC grades with different molecular weights and different degrees of substitution (D.S.) were used, CMC Finnfix WRH and CMC Cekol DVG. The effect of the CMC was studied by measuring the increase in the total charge density as well as in the surface charge density. In this way, both the total amount of attached CMC and the amount of the CMC attached onto the surface of the fibres Could be determined. Hand-sheets were made to study the effects of CMC addition on the physical properties of the paper. Different amounts of CMC were added to find the optimum, which was determined to be 1% CMC on wood. The proportion of CMC attached at a level addition of 1% (on wood) was about 40%. It was, however, found that a large part of the CMC was degraded during the cook. Whereas high molecular weight CMC is attached onto the surface of fibres, the degraded CMC is attached to the interior of the cell wall, decreasing the efficiency of the CIVIC to enhance the joint strength between fibres. The tensile index increased significantly, approximately 10% after beating to 2000 PFI revolutions, when 1% CMC Finnfix WRH on wood was added. The CMC Cekol DVG grade showed the greatest increase in tensile index, approximately 12% at 2000 PFI revolutions. The results of the bleaching of a sample treated with CMC Finnfix WRH showed that a part of the effect of CMC remains after bleaching. Most of the reduction in the positive effect was due to a loss of CMC molecules from the fibre surface.

  • On Gas Contaminants, and Bipolar Plates in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy through two electrocatalytic reactions. The most common catalyst used is platinum on carbon (Pt/C), which has shown the best performance in the fuel cell until now. However, the drawback of this catalyst is that it does not tolerate impurities, and both hydrogen and oxygen may carry small amounts of impurities depending on the production sources. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the effect of two impurities that are less investigated, i.e., ammonia, which may accompany the hydrogen rich reformates from renewable sources, and nitrogen dioxide, which may come from air pollution. The mechanism of contamination and an adequate recovery method for the respective contaminant are studied. Additionally, electroplated bipolar plates with Ni-Mo and Ni-Mo-P coatings were tested as alternatives to stainless steel and carbon materials. The results show that ammonia not only provokes changes in the polymer membrane but also in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and catalyst ionomer in both electrodes. The extent of performance recovery after the contamination depends on the concentration used and the exposure time. In contrast, nitrogen dioxide affects the catalyst in the electrode directly; the contamination is related to side reactions that are produced on the catalyst’s surface. However, NO2 is not attached strongly to the catalyst and it is possible to restore the performance by using clean air. The time the recovery process takes depends on the potential applied and the air flow. Finally, the evaluation of electroplated Ni-Mo and Ni-Mo-P on stainless steel by ex situ and in situ studies shows that these coatings reduce the internal contact resistance (ICR) and the corrosion rate of the stainless steel considerably. However, the in situ experiments show that phosphorus addition to the coating does not improve the fuel cell performance; thus, the Ni-Mo alloy is found to be a promising choice for electroplating stainless steel bipolar plates.
