  • Deciphering microbiomes dozens of meters under our feet and their edaphoclimatic and spatial drivers

    • Microbes inhabiting deep soil layers are known to be different from their counterpart in topsoil yet remain under investigation in terms of their structure, function, and how their diversity is shaped. The microbiome of deep soils (>1 m) is expected to be relatively stable and highly independent from climatic conditions. Much less is known, however, on how these microbial communities vary along climate gradients. Here, we used amplicon sequencing to investigate bacteria, archaea, and fungi along fifteen 18-m depth profiles at 20–50-cm intervals across contrasting aridity conditions in semi-arid forest ecosystems of China's Loess Plateau. Our results showed that bacterial and fungal α diversity and bacterial and archaeal community similarity declined dramatically in topsoil and remained relatively stable in deep soil. Nevertheless, deep soil microbiome still showed the functional potential of N cycling, plant-derived organic matter degradation, resource exchange, and water coordination. The deep soil microbiome had closer taxa–taxa and bacteria–fungi associations and more influence of dispersal limitation than topsoil microbiome. Geographic distance was more influential in deep soil bacteria and archaea than in topsoil. We further showed that aridity was negatively correlated with deep-soil archaeal and fungal richness, archaeal community similarity, relative abundance of plant saprotroph, and bacteria–fungi associations, but increased the relative abundance of aerobic ammonia oxidation, manganese oxidation, and arbuscular mycorrhizal in the deep soils. Root depth, complexity, soil volumetric moisture, and clay play bridging roles in the indirect effects of aridity on microbes in deep soils. Our work indicates that, even microbial communities and nutrient cycling in deep soil are susceptible to changes in water availability, with consequences for understanding the sustainability of dryland ecosystems and the whole-soil in response to aridification. Moreover, we propose that neglecting soil depth may underestimate the role of soil moisture in dryland ecosystems under future climate scenarios.

  • Recrystallization and texture evolution of warm-pilgered FeCrAl alloy tube during annealing at 850°C

    • Recrystallization annealing of warm-pilgered FeCrAl tubes was the key to reduce the cracking and control the microstructure and properties of the cladding tube. The recrystallization and texture evolution of warm-pilgered FeCrAl tubes were investigated. The recrystallization kinetics and textural evolution during annealing were characterized using microhardness measurements and electron backscatter diffraction. The 3D-microstructure of the warm-pilgered FeCrAl tube exhibited heterogeneous deformed grains of α-fiber and γ-fiber orientation. The significant anisotropy results in different recrystallization kinetics in the axial and circumferential directions of the tube. The mirostructure maintains a stable grain size of ∼22 µm and an aspect ratio of 1.8 in the axial and circumferential directions within 0–600 min annealing time. The stable microstructure is due to the dispersion of fine Laves phase particles in the ferrite matrix. Quantitative texture analysis shows that the α-fiber texture decreased significantly and the γ-fiber increased after recrystallization. During the annealing process, the α-fiber strong point texture component {112}<110> turns into {223}<110> and the γ-fiber component {111}<110> turns into {111}<112>. The recrystallization and texture evolution of warm-pilgered FeCrAl tube is of great significance to preparation and microstructure control of final cladding tube.

  • A catalog of genetic loci associated with kidney function from analyses of a million individuals

    • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is responsible for a public health burden with multi-systemic complications. Through transancestry meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and independent replication (n = 1,046,070), we identified 264 associated loci (166 new). Of these,147 were likely to be relevant for kidney function on the basis of associations with the alternative kidney function marker blood urea nitrogen (n = 416,178). Pathway and enrichment analyses, including mouse models with renal phenotypes, support the kidney as the main target organ. A genetic risk score for lower eGFR was associated with clinically diagnosed CKD in 452,264 independent individuals. Colocalization analyses of associations with eGFR among 783,978 European-ancestry individuals and gene expression across 46 human tissues, including tubulo-interstitial and glomerular kidney compartments, identified 17 genes differentially expressed in kidney. Fine-mapping highlighted missense driver variants in 11 genes and kidney-specific regulatory variants. These results provide a comprehensive priority list of molecular targets for translational research.

    • We continue our investigation on general large deviation principles (LDPs) for longest runs. Previously, a general LDP for the longest success run in a sequence of independent Bernoulli trails was derived in [Z. Liu and X. Yang, A general large deviation principle for longest runs, Statist. Probab. Lett. 110 (2016), 128-132]. In the present note, we establish a general LDP for the longest success run in a two-state (success or failure) Markov chain which recovers the previous result in the aforementioned paper. The main new ingredient is to implement suitable estimates of the distribution function of the longest success run recently established in [Z. Liu and X. Yang, On the longest runs in Markov chains, Probab. Math. Statist. 38 (2018), no. 2, 407-428].

  • Physicochemical and tribological properties of gemini-type halogen-free dicationic ionic liquids

    • A series of new halogen-free dicationic ionic liquids (ILs) with different alkyl chain lengths were prepared, and the relationship between the alkyl chain length, physicochemical and tribological properties of ILs, and their role as neat lubricant for steel-steel friction pairs, was investigated. Evaluation of stability during hydrolysis and copper strip corrosion test results show that synthetic ILs are stable and not corrosive to metal contacts, due to the halogen-free anions. The friction and wear test results indicate that ILs with long alkyl chains have excellent friction-reducing and anti-wear properties, especially at high temperatures. Based on the surface three-dimensional (3D) profiles, electrical contact resistance, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and the X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) analysis of the worn surfaces of steel discs, we can conclude that the efficiency of ILs is due to the formation of high quality tribofilms that consist of both tribochemical reaction and ordered absorption films.

  • Task-Specific Oil-Miscible Ionic Liquids Lubricate Steel/Light Metal Alloy : A Tribochemistry Study

    • In order to increase the solubility of ionic liquids in base oils and to improve the lubricating performance of light alloys, two new ionic liquids comprised of sulfonate base anion and phosphonium based cation are designed and synthesized. The difference between these two ionic liquids is the cation: One has only one organophosphate group (P88816DOSS) and the other has two organophosphate group (P888PDOSS). The copper strip corrosion test is used to evaluate the anticorrosion properties of new developed ionic liquids. Tribological properties of the ionic liquids are investigated by an optimal SRV-IV oscillating tribometer. The results indicate that the new designed ionic liquids show very good solubility in traditional mineral-based oils. P88816DOSS and P888PDOSS show excellent friction reduction, antiwear performance accompanied with effective anticorrosion properties for the mineral base oil. Surface analysis results show that the superior properties of P88816DOSS and P888PDOSS are attributed to surface chemical reactions between ionic liquids and light metal.
