    • In the present study, barium-based NOx, storage catalysts containing platinum, rhodium, or both noble metals were investigated. The influence of SO2 exposure conditions on the performance of NOx storage catalysts was studied using flow reactor measurements, FTIR, and XPS where the samples were exposed to lean and/or rich SO2-containing gas mixtures, simulating the conditions in a mixed lean application. The main results show that all samples are sensitive to sulfur and that deactivation is faster when SO2 is present in the feed under rich conditions than under lean or continuous SO2 exposure. It was also found that SO2 affects the performance of noble metals strongly and that noble metal deactivation most likely occurs during the rich period of a NOx storage cycle. Additionally, the influence of the noble metals present in the catalysts was investigated with respect to sulfur sensitivity and it was found that a combination of platinum and rhodium seems to be preferable for retaining high performance (high NO oxidation and reduction activity) of the catalyst under SO2 exposure and subsequent regeneration.

  • Simultaneous measurements of gaseous emissions, particulates and noise from individual vehicles in traffic

    • In order to identify vehicles and traffic situations that have a negative impact on the environment, it is important to be able to measure emissions from individual vehicles in traffic. In this study an attempt is made to measure gases, particles and noise emitted from single vehicles in normal traffic. An apparatus for Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test (FEAT), by which emissions of NO, CO, HC and CO2 are measured, was combined with particle instruments for both total and size-distribution measurements, as well as noise measurements. The sampling of particles was done utilising a tube system for sampling on the road together with a dilution system. The noise measurements were done with two microphones at different heights. The measurements show that it is feasible to study regulated emissions, particle emissions and noise emissions from individual vehicles in normal traffic. Noise data was collected from ca 200 individual vehicles during the measurement campaign and the emissions of some of the vehicles were evaluated. The measurements were manually supervised and the evaluations mainly made by hand. The experiences of this project are encouraging and show that it is possible to perform measurements of noise emissions from individual vehicles automatically. One way to achieve this would be by extending the FEAT system so that it also measures noise emission. Further it is important to perform sampling and evaluation automatically and to use computerized procedures for the evaluation. By using CO2 data together with the particle data, we were able to obtain PM emission factors for individual vehicles. We also showed that the particle size-distribution can be obtained from individual vehicles in traffic when using a fast instrument. This also, in principle, allows for the separation of particles emitted from the engine and particles from road and tyre wear.

  • Erroneous computer-based interpretations of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter in a Swedish primary health care setting

    • Objective: To describe the incidence of incorrect computerized ECG interpretations of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter in a Swedish primary care population, the rate of correction of computer misinterpretations, and the consequences of misdiagnosis. Design: Retrospective expert re-analysis of ECGs with a computer-suggested diagnosis of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. Setting: Primary health care in Region Kronoberg, Sweden. Subjects: All adult patients who had an ECG recorded between January 2016 and June 2016 with a computer statement including the words 'atrial fibrillation' or 'atrial flutter'. Main outcome measures: Number of incorrect computer interpretations of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter; rate of correction by the interpreting primary care physician; consequences of misdiagnosis of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. Results: Among 988 ECGs with a computer diagnosis of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, 89 (9.0%) were incorrect, among which 36 were not corrected by the interpreting physician. In 12 cases, misdiagnosed atrial fibrillation/flutter led to inappropriate treatment with anticoagulant therapy. A larger proportion of atrial flutters, 27 out of 80 (34%), than atrial fibrillations, 62 out of 908 (7%), were incorrectly diagnosed by the computer. Conclusions: Among ECGs with a computer-based diagnosis of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, the diagnosis was incorrect in almost 10%. In almost half of the cases, the misdiagnosis was not corrected by the overreading primary-care physician. Twelve patients received inappropriate anticoagulant treatment as a result of misdiagnosis.
