- We begin by thanking our colleague Eldar Bråten for taking the time to read and comment on our article with such thoroughness. We continue right away with a response. A key aspect of Bråten’s critique is his claim that it is difficult to understand how we reason and, therefore, ‘how to discern substantial arguments in texts that overflow with evocative and metaphoric prose?’ In order to reply to such a concern, we choose to, first, take a step back and provide a backdrop to our anthropological thinking (and, therefore, reasoning and ‘prose’) and how it is situated within a longer trajectory of thought. Thereafter, we turn to his specific concerns with our approach to utopia.

- A Revolução Angolana no Século XXI é um estudo sobre a democracia e as suas (im)possibilidades na Angola pós‑independência, a partir da trajectória que a ideia de «revolução» teve no país, da implantação de uma República Popular em Novembro de 1975 à passagem para uma «democracia social» na década de 1990, e posterior transição para o pós‑guerra – resultando numa entidade chamada «República Popular do M». O eixo central deste livro é a emergência, em 2011, do movimento conhecido em Angola como «Revú», que testou a reacção do regime do MPLA à mobilização da sociedade civil, culminando no chamado «Processo 15+2», em que um grupo de activistas foi detido e acusado de tentativa de golpe de Estado. Através da história dos revús em Angola, o livro tenta também entender e dar voz à dissidência política dos últimos anos, num quadro de reflexão sobre práxis política e democracia efectiva e/ou simulada nos dias de hoje.

- This dispatch examines contemporary activist movements in Angola and their political utopias, namely their relevance to citizenship and governance, and their increasing importance in the political landscape. The authors describe the civic mobilization toward the implementation of a municipal electoral system (autarquia) and argue that it poses an Afro-utopian challenge: the issue of autarky, or the recognition of self-organization and self-sufficiency vis-à-vis postcolonial autocratic rule.

- In this article, through a set of ethnographic vignettes from fieldwork conducted in Angola since 2015, I discuss the political semantics of crisis and austerity, and simultaneously outline an itinerary of a “traveling austerity” between Portugal and Angola, exposing the interconnectedness and mutual binding of both political and economic contexts. Invoking stories of migrant workers in Luanda and the work of local “financial activists” protesting against financial inequality in Angola, I question the relevance of national-based approaches to austerity politics, explore conceptualizations of austerity beyond its “original,” mainstream Eurocentric setting, and argue towards the necessity of analyzing transnational intersections in the study of austerity.

- Neste texto abordo a noção de “estética da persuasão” formulada por Birgit Meyer. Explorando a dimensão distributiva da estética presente na sua tese, argumento que o “lugar” da religião é um espaço de relacionalidades exteriorizações que deverá incluir tanto crentes como não crentes, os espaços de culto e as suas vizinhanças seculares, configurando um “público” que excede o religioso. Para tal, Utilizo como termo de comparação empírico o meu trabalho de campo sobre pluralismo religioso no bairro do Palanca, em Luanda (Angola).

- Co-authored by three anthropologists with long–term expertise studying Pentecostalism in Vanuatu, Angola, and Papua New Guinea/the Trobriand Islands respectively, Going to Pentecost offers a comparative study of Pentecostalism in Africa and Melanesia, focusing on key issues as economy, urban sociality, and healing. More than an ordinary comparative book, it recognizes the changing nature of religion in the contemporary world – in particular the emergence of “non-territorial” religion (which is no longer specific to places or cultures) – and represents an experimental approach to the study of global religious movements in general and Pentecostalism in particular.
