  • Perspectives: a round-table discussion on decolonial pedagogies.
  • 2022
  • In: Film Education Journal. ; 5:1, s. 24-33
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Three practitioners – a film-maker, a photographer and a film curator, all working in higher education, teaching film production, photography and film studies – discuss their reflections on co-convening a decolonising pedagogy workshop–conference hosted in May 2019 at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. They draw from their unique geographical positions – South Africa, Sweden and the UK respectively – to reflect on the nuances and differences of how race and subjectivity shape classroom interactions with the curriculum, and the institutional challenges in developing transformational pedagogy practices. The conversation uses as its impetus this shared experience of co-convening and facilitating the ‘Decolonising pedagogy: Exploring processes in image-making’ workshop–conference, and leads to discussion of broader issues of historical conditions and the geopolitical contexts that have determined the subsequent impact and outcomes in their different universities.

  • Living with Contradictions
  • 2020
  • In: Parse Journal. - 2002-0953. ; Intersections:11
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Until recently it has been very unusual to encounter work by artists problematising their identification with ‘whiteness’ or as the coloniser. But, in recent years research has shown ‘white’ European artists travelling to former colonies to make sense of repressed histories that continue to haunt the European consciousness. This paper considers how some ‘white’ artists highlighting European colonial entanglements are able to add to a postcolonial artistic framework. Using the examples of British artists Lindsay Seers and Miranda Pennell, who trace their own personal history and involvement in the colonial space, this paper discusses how they reimagine and reinvent family histories, highlighting uncomfortable personal relationships and bring the ghosts back to Europe. In addition, they open up a space from where works on mixed belongings and heritages and shifting identifications can be contextualised.

  • Photography and the Glitch
  • 2023
  • In: Philosophy of Photography. - 2040-3682 .- 2040-3690. ; 14:2, s. 141-151
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Within the last decade, a growing number of artists, media activists and theorists have been engaged with the potential of the glitch – with processes and aesthetics that arise from visual errors in digital tech- nologies. But glitches also offer clues to understanding normative knowledge and power systems, and to challenge these. This is relevant in critical approaches to photography and its historical role in forming, controlling and colonizing systems as well as conventional understandings of the medium as a transpar- ent window onto the world/reality. In this introduction we outline our approach to the glitch in the artis- tic and curatorial research project ‘Photography and the Glitch’, to which the contributors to this issue have contributed in various ways.

In this interview, the guest editors, Nina Mangalanayagam and Louise Wolthers, ask Professor Parikka to revisit some of the book’s core issues in relation to digital photography and the current media landscape in general. The conversation also revolves around artificial intelligence (AI), bugs, mimicry, contemporary art as well as scale and operational images, which reflect Parikka’s recent research.
