    • The structural evolution of cobalt nanoclusters synthesized in silica glass by ion implantation has been investigated upon thermal annealing. The samples were characterized by in-situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, exploiting a synchrotron radiation beam and following their evolution during thermal treatments in vacuo up to T = 800 °C. Before heating, the system is composed of hcp Co nanocrystals; we have not detected the transition from hcp to fcc structure that in the bulk phase occurs around 420 °C; nevertheless, the differences in the diffraction pattern recorded at T = 800 °C with respect to the corresponding one at room temperature suggest the presence of a second crystalline phase. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.     • Post-copulatory sexual selection, and sperm competition in particular, is a powerful selective force shaping the evolution of sperm morphology. Although mounting evidence suggests that post-copulatory sexual selection influences the evolution of sperm morphology among species, recent evidence also suggests that sperm competition influences variation in sperm morphology at the intraspecific level. However, contradictory empirical results and limited taxonomic scope have led to difficulty in assessing the generality of sperm morphological responses to variation in the strength of sperm competition. Here, we use phylogenetically controlled analyses to explore the effects of sperm competition on sperm morphology and variance in sharks, a basal vertebrate group characterized by wide variation in rates of multiple mating by females, and consequently sperm competition risk. Our analyses reveal that shark species experiencing greater levels of sperm competition produce sperm with longer flagella and that sperm flagellum length is less variable in species under higher sperm competition risk. In contrast, neither the length of the sperm head and midpiece nor variation in sperm head and midpiece length was associated with sperm competition risk. Our findings demonstrate that selection influences both the inter- and intraspecific variation in sperm morphology and suggest that the flagellum is an important target of sexual selection in sharks. These findings provide important insight into patterns of selection on the ejaculate in a basal vertebrate lineage.

    • Silver nanoclusters embedded in two transparent fluorinated polyimides, 4,4'-hexafluoroisopropylidene diphthalic anhydride - 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl paraphenylene diamine (6FDA-DAD) and 3,3',4,4' - biphenyltetracarboxylic acid dianhydride - 1,1-bis(4-aminophenyl)-1-phenyl-2,2,2-trifluoroethane (BPDA-3F), have been produced by surface modification with KOH aqueous solution followed by K-assisted Ag doping and thermal reduction in hydrogen atmosphere. The reaction rate of the nucleophilic hydrolysis in KOH, studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), depends on the polyimide chemical structure. After ion-exchange in AgNO 3 solution and subsequent annealing, the polyimide structure recovery was monitored by FT-IR whereas the characteristic surface plasmon absorption band of silver nanoparticles was evidenced by optical absorption measurements. The structure of silver nanoclusters as related to size and size distribution in the different polyimide matrices was thoroughly investigated by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The collected data evidenced a uniform distribution of Ag clusters of nanometric size after thermal treatment at 300 °C in both polyimides. For the same ion-exchange treatment parameters and annealing temperature, XRD analyses evidenced the presence of crystallites with similar sizes. © EDP Sciences/Società Italiana di Fisica/Springer-Verlag 2007.

    • Au-polyimide nanocomposites have been synthesized by implanting Au + ions in pyromellitic dianhydride-4,4′ oxydianiline polyimide films prepared by glow discharge vapor deposition polymerisation (GDVDP). A structural and optical characterization shows that Au clusters grow only implanting 5 × 1016 Au+/cm2. This sample class shows interesting dynamic optical absorption sensing responses towards methanol and ethanol vapors in the spectral range corresponding to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak of the gold nanoparticles. Traditional surface plasmon resonance measurements performed onto virgin polyimide thin films in controlled atmosphere show a sensing activity due to a variation of the film thickness and of the real part of refractive index. The comparison of the results obtained onto virgin films and implanted ones suggests that the sensing mechanisms can be attributed both to the modification of polymer optical properties and to the chemical activity of gold nanoparticles. © 2005 Elsevier B.V.     • Au-polyimide nànocomposites have been synthesized by implanting different doses of Au+ ions in 100 nm thick films of pyromellitic dianhydride-4,4′ oxydianiline polyimide, prepared by glow discharge vapor deposition polymerization. Unambiguous evidence of Au nanoclusters growth is found only at the highest implantation doses (5 × 1016 Au + / cm2). Structural, compositional, and optical characterizations show that the implantation induces the compactation of the initial film due to H and C loss. The resulting structure is a composite containing 2-3 nm gold nanoparticles arranged in a layer of about 40 nm and, just beneath the sample surface, a 15 nm thick carbon-rich layer. Optical simulations suggest the presence of a gold-carbon core-shell structure in the nanoparticles. © 2004 American Institute of Physics.
