  • 2015
  • In: Proceedings of the 33rd Annual ACM Conference Extended Abstracts on Human Factors in Computing Systems. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450331463 ; , s. 2253-2258
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This case study illustrates and analyzes the process of redesigning one of the largest news media site in Sweden during a cooperation between the Interaction Design Study Program at Umeå University and VK Media using a customer centric open approach. The results show that the design process used, both provided new insights for the industry and produced an appreciated website that facilitated the transition into a new revenue model using a paywall for digital content.

  • Open innovation processes in the newspaper industry
  • 2015
  • In: 2015 ANZMAC conference - Innovation and growth strategies in marketing. - : ANZMAC. ; , s. 84-91
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The digitalization of society is constantly increasing. Even though this is something that is affecting most industries, the newspaper industry has suffered a great deal during the last 20 years. It is, therefore, essential that both current business and revenue model change. This case study illustrates and analyses how opening up the innovation at a newspaper increased customer value and facilitated a change of business model. The study is based on action research in cooperation with Västerbottens-Kuriren, a top-10 news website in Sweden. The result show that the open innovation and design process used, provided new insights into the industry as well as produced an appreciated website that facilitated the transition into a changed revenue model using a paywall for digital content.

  • Customer centric innovation processes and timing to deliver renewed value in mature and declining industries: A case study of the graphic arts industry
  • 2015
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Digitalization has shifted industries closer to each other and disruptive innovation has been a major reason for the success and failure of many products and industries. Hence, the need for innovative business models and extend the innovation process beyond the technological features have become more prominent recently. The objective of this case study of the graphic arts industry is to discuss the use of customer centric open innovation processes, in a longitudinal sense, as a mean to change the competitive posture. The results of this case study are based on 11 interview series with 54 firms (43 printing firms, 7 direct customers toprinting firms and 4 media and advertising agencies).

  • Mediekonsumentens medvetna och omedvetna val : en nyckel till morgondagens mediekonsumtion
  • 2014
  • In: Medie-Sverige 2014. - : Nordicom. - 9789186523794 ; , s. 29-37
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • The media consumers’ conscious and unconscious choices : a key to understanding the news media consumption of tomorrow
  • 2014
  • In: Colloque International Communication Électronique Cultures et Identités, 11, 12 & 13 juin 2014. - : The IUT of Le Havre : Information-Communication Department CIRTAI IDEES (UMR6228). ; , s. 1-8, s. 521-528
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The digital society of today is dramatically different than that of a decade ago. During the past decades computers have gone from being clearly visible and at the center of attention to becoming an integrated and omnipresent part of our everyday lives. Today, individuals are catching up on a reality where homes, workplaces and society to a large extent consist of microprocessors that collect, analyze and present information. With regards to news and information sharing, it may seem that the users, thanks to greater ability to choose content, hold the upper hand in this process. However, since these data are constantly collected and analyzed for various purposes by companies, for example in the media industry, the users’ choices may not be as unconditional as they may think they are. Using the Swedish media market as an example, this exploratory paper discusses the interdependency between people’s choices and the market-driven choices made by the media industry in relation to news, and the impact these choices may have on media consumption and the media market.

  • Python in a week : Conceptual tests for learning and course development
  • 2023
  • In: Proceedings of the International CDIO Conference. - : NTNU SEED. - 9788230361863 ; , s. 470-480
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Programming has gradually become an essential skill for engineers and scientists across disciplines and is an important part of the CDIO Syllabus covering fundamental knowledge and reasoning. Recently, there has been a shift away from introductory programming languages like C and Java towards Python, especially in programs where the focus lies on handling and analysing large quantities of data, such as energy technology, biotechnology, and bioinformatics. This paper illustrates the successful setup of a one-week-long introductory Python programming course with a hands-on approach. Given the limited time, a challenge is how to effectively teach students a meaningful set of skills that enables them to self-guide their future learning. Moreover, since the course does not include any summative assessment, we need other means of measuring students’ learning and guiding course development. We address these challenges by coupling short lectures with short quizzes for formative assessment, adding another learning activity to the course. We find that, in the absence of summative assessment, short, frequent quizzes with immediate feedback are an excellent tool to track the learning of a class as a whole. Students report that the quizzes, albeit challenging, improved their understanding of programming concepts, made them aware of potential mistakes, and were a fun learning experience. Furthermore, the results from this paper illustrate how a new programming language can be taught to students without prior programming skills in a short period of time. We summarise our lessons learnt for designing and integrating quizzes in short-format programming courses.

  • Curriculum agility at faculty, department, program and course level
  • 2022
  • In: 50th annual conference of the European society for engineering education. - 9788412322262 ; , s. 1872-1877
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This short paper describes the first prototyping of a self-evaluation process of Curriculum Agility at a Faculty of Technology in Sweden. The process comprises guided, semi-structured, individual interviews at different organisational levels within the faculty, a joint narrative based on those interviews, prioritizing development strategies per level, and jointly mapping them on importance and implementation time. The self-evaluation is part of and based on the research on the principles of Curriculum Agility. The results show the interplay in timely curriculum change for futureproof engineering education between the teaching staff, the systems and the people who control the systems. The self-evaluation brings together the different perspectives and perceptions within the faculty and gives insight in how those affect the willingness towards and occurrence of curriculum development. This work in progress indicates how doing such a qualitative self-evaluation paves the road for transparent strategic dialogues on a holistic level about what to give attention and organize differently.
