  • Recommendations for research funding organisations towards ending gender-based violence
  • 2023
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This factsheet addresses research funding organisations at European, national, regional and local levels and provides recommendations on their role towards ending gender-based violence. Recommendations are based on the findings from the EU-funded UniSAFE project. Readers of this factsheet may want to consult UniSAFE’s toolkit section on concepts and meanings. Background information about the root causes of gender-based violence in research and academia are laid out in the White Paper for Policymakers and Institutional Managers, together with a presentation of the 7P model (Prevalence, Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, Provision of services, Partnerships, Policy).

  • Theorising Gender-Based Violence Policies : A 7P Framework
  • 2023
  • In: Social Sciences. - : MDPI. - 2076-0760. ; 12:7
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents and critically interrogates a comprehensive 7Ps framework for analysing and addressing gender-based violence. It takes the UN and the Council of Europe's models as points of departure and develops the framework beyond the current state of the art, explains its different components, and offers reflections on its use in the practice of gender-based violence research. The UN 3P model, encompassing prevention, protection, and prosecution, later developed by the Council of Europe's Istanbul Convention into a 4P model, comprising prevention, protection, prosecution, and integrated policies, has since been revisited, elaborated upon, and expanded in work focusing on gender-based violence in particular domains, such as female genital mutilation or gender-based violence in sport. To study gender-based violence in academia, the comprehensive 7Ps analytical framework has been deployed to interrogate the policies in place at national and institutional levels, including sexual harassment. Based on empirical data and conceptual analysis in the EU project UniSAFE: Gender-based violence and institutional responses: Building a knowledge base and operational tools to make universities and research organisations safe (2021-2024), the paper argues that the refined 7Ps model, comprising Prevalence, Prevention, Protection, Prosecution of offenders (and disciplinary measures), Provision of services, Partnerships between actors, and Policies specifically addressing the issue, allows for a more encompassing approach, in turn allowing a more fine-grained understanding of variations and explanations for success (or lack thereof) in terms of outcomes.

  • UniSAFE D6.2 Assessment framework to take stock, measure progresses, and identify strengths and weakness in organisational responses to gender-based violence along the 7Ps
  • 2023
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This deliverable presents an assessment framework to support universities and research organisations in their work against gender-based violence. It is based in the logic of the Impact Driver Model (Mergaert et al. 2022) and draws on the knowledge produced throughout the UniSAFE project. The objective is to develop an assessment framework to enable the identification of the strengths and weaknesses of universities and research organisations, and to assess progress, in addressing gender-based violence. It is informed by the micro, meso and macro level research conducted in UniSAFE WP3, WP4, WP5, WP6 and the consortium and stakeholder workshops in WP5, WP6, and WP7. The assessment framework is presented as tool to be used by individual universities and research organisations, and includes the 7P model (Prevalence, Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, Provision of Services, Partnerships and Policy). It builds upon the ideas and concepts established in the Impact Driver Model on gender equality and provides specific indicators that can be used by RPOs to assess their overall institutional capacity and progress on addressing gender-based violence. The assessment framework consists of eight impact drivers and 18 indicators, and seven sub-indicators detailing each P of the 7P model. The impact drivers include institutional frameworks, concepts, institutional measures, victim-centred approach, knowledge and expertise, leadership commitment, information and communication, and monitoring and evaluation

  • The concept and measurement of violence against women and men
  • 2017
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Violence matters. It wrecks lives. It causes injury and misery. Violence is both a cause and consequence of inequality. It is a violation of human rights.Violence is a detriment to health and to sustainable economic development. Ending violence (or just reducing it) would be a major contribution to human wellbeing. A life free from violence is much valued. Preventing violence is a widely shared goal. How? In order to end violence, a theory of change in violence is needed. In order to know what works to reduce violence, it is necessary to test theory with evidence. But even evidence as to whether the rate of violence is going up or down is hard to establish. This book seeks to improve the measurement of violence as a contribution towards zero violence.
