  • Towards a unified fronthaul-backhaul data plane for 5G The 5G-Crosshaul project approach
  • 2017
  • In: Computer Standards and Interfaces. - : Elsevier BV. - 0920-5489. ; 51, s. 56-62
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The paper presents a study of key aspects in the design of a flexible unified data plane capable of integrating both fronthaul and backhaul transport in future 5G systems. In this study, we first review candidate access and multiplexing technologies from the state of the art and assess their capability to support legacy and new fronthaul and backhaul traffic. We then propose a new design framework for the targeted flexible unified data plane, featuring a primary packet-switching path supported by an auxiliary circuit-switching for extreme low latency scenarios. This comprises a summary of the first results achieved in the 5G-Crosshaul EU project since its kick-off in July 2015.

  • Empowering industry 4.0 and autonomous drone scouting use cases through 5G-DIVE solution
  • 2021
  • In: 2021 Joint European Conference on Networks and Communications and 6G Summit, EuCNC/6G Summit 2021. - 2575-4912. - 9781665415262 ; , s. 265-270
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The 5G Edge Intelligence for Vertical Experimentation (5G-DIVE) project aims at demonstrating the technical merits and business value proposition of 5G technologies in two vertical pilots, namely the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and Autonomous Drones Scout (ADS) pilots. This paper presents an overview of the overall 5G-DIVE solution and reports the results of the initial validation campaign of the selected use case, featuring 5G connectivity, distributed Edge computing, and artificial intelligence. The initial results for the I4.0 provide a baseline for next step validation campaign targeting a broader scale 5G implementation, while the ADS results provides promising results for enhancing the autonomous navigation in real-time.

  • An observational cohort study of extended dosing (once every 2 weeks or once monthly) regimens with darbepoetin alfa in patients with chronic kidney disease not on dialysis: the EXTEND study.
  • 2012
  • In: Nephrology, dialysis, transplantation. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1460-2385 .- 0931-0509. ; 27:6, s. 2303-2311
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Darbepoetin alfa (DA) has been shown to be an effective treatment of anaemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) not on dialysis (NoD). EXTEND is an observational study assessing the effectiveness of DA administered once biweekly (Q2W) or monthly (QM) in a general CKD-NoD population.METHODS: Adult CKD-NoD patients starting DA Q2W/QM treatment in June 2006 or later were eligible. Retrospective and/or prospective data including haemoglobin levels and erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) dosing were collected for 6 months before and 12 months after DA initiation. Mean Hb levels were calculated every 3 months, and ESA dose was converted to a geometric mean weekly DA equivalent dose and summarized monthly.RESULTS: Data from 4278 patients showed that patients receiving ESA treatment before DA Q2W/QM initiation had a mean (95% confidence interval) Hb level of 11.9 g/dL (11.8-12.0 g/dL) at initiation and 11.6 g/dL (11.6-11.7 g/dL) at Months 10-12, with mean ESA dose of 22 μg/week (21-23 μg/week) prior to initiation, 16 μg/week (15-16 μg/week) at initiation and 16 μg/week (15-16 μg/week) at Month 12. In ESA-naive patients, Hb levels increased from 10.3 g/dL (10.2-10.3 g/dL) at initiation to 11.7 g/dL at Months 4-6 and were maintained at a mean level of 11.7 g/dL (11.7-11.8 g/dL) at Months 10-12, with mean ESA dose of 16 μg/week (16-17 μg/week) at initiation and 16 μg/week (16-17 μg/week) at Month 12. In the 85% of patients receiving DA at extended intervals (Q2W or less frequently) at Month 12, 12 patients (0.3%) experienced DA-related adverse reactions.CONCLUSION: DA Q2W/QM was an effective treatment of anaemia in the general CKD-NoD patient population and a dose increase was not required in patients switching from a previous ESA regimen.

  • DEEP : A Vertical-Oriented Intelligent and Automated Platform for the Edge and Fog
  • 2021
  • In: IEEE Communications Magazine. - : IEEE. - 0163-6804 .- 1558-1896. ; 59:6, s. 66-72
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The fifth generation (5G) of mobile communications introduces improvements on many fronts when compared to its previous generations. Besides the performance enhancements and new advances in radio technologies, it also integrates other technological domains, such as cloud-to-things continuum and artificial intelligence. In this work, the 5G-DIVE Elastic Edge Platform (DEEP) is proposed as the linking piece for the integration of these technological domains, making available an intelligent edge and fog 5G end-to-end solution. This solution brings numerous benefits to vertical industries by enabling streamlined, abstracted, and automated management of their vertical services, thus contributing to the introduction of novel services, cost savings, and improved time to market. Preliminary validation of the proposed platform is performed through a proof of concept, along with a qualitative analysis of its benefits for Industry 4.0 and autonomous drone scouting vertical industries.

  • An integrated edge and Fog system for future communication networks
  • 2018
  • In: 2018 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW). ; , s. 338-343
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Put together, the edge and fog form a large diverse pool of computing and networking resources from different owners that can be leveraged towards low latency applications as well as for alleviating high traffic volume in future networks including 5G and beyond. This paper sets out a framework for the integration of edge and fog computing and networking leveraging on ongoing specifications by ETSI MEC ISG and the OpenFog Consortium. It also presents the technological gaps that need to be addressed before such an integrated solution can be developed. These noticeably include challenges relating to the volatility of resources, heterogeneity of underlying technologies, virtualization of devices, and security issues. The framework presented is a Launchpad for a complete solution under development by the 5G-CORAL consortium.
