    • A need to apply the massively parallel computing paradigm in embedded real-time systems is foreseen. Such applications put new demands on massively parallel systems, different from those of general purpose computing. For example, time determinism is more important than maximal throughput, physical distribution is often required, size, power, and I/O are important, and interactive development tools are needed. The paper describes an architecture for high-performance, embedded, massively parallel processing, featuring a large number of nodes physically distributed over a large area. A typical node has thousands of processing elements (PEs) organized in SIMD mode and is the size of the palm of a hand, Intermodule communication over a scalable optical network is described. A combination of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and time division multiplexing (TDM) is used. © 1994 IEEE.

    • With the increased degree of miniaturization resulting from the use of modem VLSI technology and the high communication bandwidth available through optical connections, it is now possible to build massively parallel computers based on distributed modules which can be embedded in advanced industrial products. Examples of such future possibilities are ''action-oriented systems'', in which a network of highly parallel modules perform a multitude of tasks related to perception, cognition, and action. The paper discusses questions of architecture on the level of modules and inter-module communication and gives concrete architectural solutions which meet the demands of typical, advanced industrial real-time applications. The interface between the processors arrays and the all-optical communication network is described in some detail. Implementation issues specifically related to the demand for miniaturization are discussed.

    • This book, a sort of summarization of the authors' insights and experiences regarding group work as well as alternatives to assembly line work from their own scientific perspective, which was made available in 1992. That is, in the (very specific) period of time (or turbulence) while the assembly plants in Uddevalla and Kalmar were closed down (the former assembly plant was closed down first, while the other was shut down approximate a year later). This book has been published by Volvo (AB Volvo Media, ISBN-number: 91 9761 604). It has been published by Arbetslivsutveckling with the editors Lars Cambert and Glenn Carlsson at this department. Moreover, the content has been validated by a number of Volvo experts and discussed at a seminary (among other things, each of these experts had to provide written comments to the two editors etc.). A comment: This publication is authored together with e.g. senior research competencies (1) within vocational learning and training as well as (2) within time-geography with whom Engström have had long time cooperation procedures.   • Using Distributed Lag Non-Linear Models to Estimate Exposure Lag-Response Associations between Long-Term Air Pollution Exposure and Incidence of Cardiovascular Disease

    • Long-term air pollution exposure increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, but little is known about the temporal relationships between exposure and health outcomes. This study aims to estimate the exposure-lag response between air pollution exposure and risk for ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke incidence by applying distributed lag non-linear models (DLNMs). Annual mean concentrations of particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5 ) and black carbon (BC) were estimated for participants in five Swedish cohorts using dispersion models. Simultaneous estimates of exposure lags 1–10 years using DLNMs were compared with separate year specific (single lag) estimates and estimates for lag 1–5-and 6–10-years using moving average exposure. The DLNM estimated no exposure lag-response between PM2.5 total, BC, and IHD. However, for PM2.5 from local sources, a 20% risk increase per 1 µg/m3 for 1-year lag was estimated. A risk increase for stroke was suggested in relation to lags 2–4-year PM2.5 and BC, and also lags 8–9-years BC. No associations were shown in single lag models. Increased risk estimates for stroke in relation to lag 1–5-and 6–10-years BC moving averages were observed. Estimates generally supported a greater contribution to increased risk from exposure windows closer in time to incident IHD and incident stroke. © 2022 by the authors.   • Visual pathway impairment by pituitary adenomas: quantitative diagnostics by diffusion tensor imaging.

    • OBJECTIVE Despite ample experience in surgical treatment of pituitary adenomas, little is known about objective indices that may reveal risk of visual impairment caused by tumor growth that leads to compression of the anterior visual pathways. This study aimed to explore diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) as a means for objective assessment of injury to the anterior visual pathways caused by pituitary adenomas. METHODS Twenty-three patients with pituitary adenomas, scheduled for transsphenoidal tumor resection, and 20 healthy control subjects were included in the study. A minimum suprasellar tumor extension of Grade 2-4, according to the SIPAP (suprasellar, infrasellar, parasellar, anterior, and posterior) scale, was required for inclusion. Neuroophthalmological examinations, conventional MRI, and DTI were completed in all subjects and were repeated 6 months after surgery. Quantitative assessment of chiasmal lift, visual field defect (VFD), and DTI parameters from the optic tracts was performed. Linear correlations, group comparisons, and prediction models were done in controls and patients. RESULTS Both the degree of VFD and chiasmal lift were significantly correlated with the radial diffusivity (r = 0.55, p < 0.05 and r = 0.48, p < 0.05, respectively) and the fractional anisotropy (r = -0.58, p < 0.05 and r = -0.47, p < 0.05, respectively) but not with the axial diffusivity. The axial diffusivity differed significantly between controls and patients with VFD, both before and after surgery (p < 0.05); however, no difference was found between patients with and without VFD. Based on the axial diffusivity and fractional anisotropy, a prediction model classified all patients with VFD correctly (sensitivity 1.0), 9 of 12 patients without VFD correctly (sensitivity 0.75), and 17 of 20 controls as controls (specificity 0.85). CONCLUSIONS DTI could detect pathology and degree of injury in the anterior visual pathways that were compressed by pituitary adenomas. The correlation between radial diffusivity and visual impairment may reflect a gradual demyelination in the visual pathways caused by an increased tumor effect. The low level of axial diffusivity found in the patient group may represent early atrophy in the visual pathways, detectable on DTI but not by conventional methods. DTI may provide objective data, detect early signs of injury, and be an additional diagnostic tool for determining indication for surgery in cases of pituitary adenomas.
