  • The common-is-moral association is stronger among less religious people
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Humanities and Social Sciences Communications. - : Springer Nature. - 2662-9992. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Questionable behaviours that are perceived as more common also tend to be judged as more morally justified. Here we explore this phenomenon in survey data from 31 countries in the European Values Study, allowing us to examine the universality of the common-is-moral association. More than 35,000 participants rated eight questionable behaviours (e.g., cheating on taxes, having casual sex) on how frequent they are and how justified they are. We estimated common-is-moral associations both across individuals for each behaviour and across behaviours within each individual; in both cases, the association tended to be positive. We further examined the hypothesis that the common-is-moral association would be stronger among less religious people, who are less likely to adopt their moral judgements from religious authorities and therefore should be more susceptible to the heuristic of using the perceived commonness of a behaviour as a guide to how it should be morally judged. Indeed, we found the common-is-moral association to be somewhat stronger among less religious people, whether the association was estimated across individuals or within individuals. We discuss alternative explanations, implications and directions for future research.

  • Is Supported Employment Effective for Young Adults with Disability Pension? : Evidence from a Swedish Randomized Evaluation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Journal of human resources. - : University of Wisconsin Press. - 0022-166X .- 1548-8004. ; 58:2, s. 452-487
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports results from a large-scale randomized experiment evaluating whether a supported employment rehabilitation intervention strategy can improve labor market opportunities for young adults on disability pension better than regular vocational rehabilitation. The supported employment intervention utilizes a caseworker as back-up for the individual during training to reduce employers’ risks when hiring an individual with unclear productivity. In total, 1,062 individuals were randomly assigned between interventions. The main results show that 18 months after the start of the project, participants with supported employment have work rates that are approximately 10 percentage points higher than participants who received regular rehabilitation.

  • Study protocol for the evaluation of a vocational rehabilitation
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Observational Studies. ; 3, s. 1-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a study protocol for the evaluation of a vocational rehabilitation, namely a collaboration between the Swedish Social Insurance Agency and the Public Employment Service, where individuals needing support to regain work ability were called to a joint assessment meeting. This protocol describes a matching study design using a lasso algorithm, where we do not have access to outcome data on work ability for the treated. The matching design is based on a collection of health and socio-economic covariates measured at baseline. We also have access to a prognosis made by caseworkers on the expected length of the individual sick leave. This prognosis variable is, we argue, a proxy variable for potential unmeasured confounders. We present results showing balance achieved on observed covariates.

  • Robust polychoric correlation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0361-0926 .- 1532-415X. ; 52:10, s. 3241-3261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The polychoric correlation is a parametric measure of the correlation between two unobserved continuous variables when the observed variables are discrete. In this paper we propose a robust version of the polychoric correlation. Robust polychoric correlation is shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal. Results from a systematic Monte Carlo simulation suggest that the new estimator has better robustness properties than normality based maximum likelihood estimation of the polychoric correlation, with negligible costs to efficiency.

  • On predictions, measurement, and causal inference : Essays on statistical correlations and statistical applications in labor market economics and criminology
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis consists of five papers covering a broad range of statistical themes, from prediction via correlation measures to causal inference.Paper I uses a nationally representative survey of separated Swedish women to examine whether men who strive to control their partners during their relationships are more likely to stalk or assault their ex-partners after separation. The empirical analysis shows that basic measures of control behaviors explain 18% of the variance in stalking victimization and 8% of the assault victimization. The predictive value of the constructed measures of control is shown to by far surpass those of other common risk markers included in the analysis.Paper II presents asymptotic properties of Spearman’s rank correlation for variables with finite support. For variables with finite support, the population version of Spearman’s rank correlation has been derived. Using this result, convergence to a normal distribution irrespectively of dependence is shown, and the asymptotic variance is derived. A small simulation study indicates that the asymptotic properties are of practical importance.Paper III proposes a robust version of the polychoric correlation, a parametric measure of the correlation between two unobserved continuous variables when the observed variables are discrete. Robust polychoric correlation is shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal. Results from a systematic Monte Carlo simulation suggest that the new estimator has better robustness properties than normality based maximum likelihood estimation of the polychoric correlation, to negligible efficiency costs.Paper IV reports results from a large-scale randomized experiment evaluating whether a supported employment rehabilitation intervention strategy can improve labor market opportunities for young adults on disability pension better than regular vocational rehabilitation. In total, 1,062 individuals were randomly assigned between interventions. The main result shows that 18 months after the start of the project, participants offered supported employment have work rates that are approximately 10 percentage points higher than participants who received regular rehabilitation.Paper V estimates consequences of interpersonal violence on victims. Using rich administrative population data for Sweden, individuals who visited a hospital in the years 1998 to 2002 due to assault are compared to individuals who did not have a hospital visit due to assault at that time, but who were statistically indistinguishable from the individuals of interest in the four years prior to the incident. The results suggest that violent crime has large and persistent effects on mortality, suicide, earnings, work status, disposable income, as well as on the number of days on sick leave. Specifically, an assault leading to a hospital visit is estimated to convey losses amounting to 1.4 million SEK per victimized woman and 1.5 million SEK per victimized man, whereof more than 80 percent result from excess mortality. Estimates on socio-economic outcomes show robustness against selection on unobserved characteristics. Estimates on mortality and suicides are very robust.

  • The price of violence : Consequences of violent crime in Sweden
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The connection between violence victimization and long term ill-health is well documented, but evidence is lacking on the causal effects of victimization beyond the time of the immediate injury. The aim of this study is to identify and estimate the longer term consequences of interpersonal violence on victims. • Over their lifetime, approximately 10% of all women become victims of postseparation stalking or assault.
