  • Magnetic and all-optical switching properties of amorphous TbxCo100-x alloys
  • 2020

    • Amorphous TbxCo100-x magnetic alloys exhibit a list of intriguing properties, such as perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, high magneto-optical activity, and magnetization switching using ultrashort optical pulses. Varying the Tb:Co ratio in these alloys allows for tuning properties such as the saturation magnetic moment, coercive field, and the performance of light-induced magnetization switching. In this paper, we investigate the magnetic, optical, and magneto-optical properties of various TbxCo100-x thin-film alloy compositions. We report on the effect the choice of different seeding layers has on the structural and magnetic properties of TbxCo100-x layers. We also demonstrate that for a range of alloys, deposited on fused silica substrates, with Tb content of 24-30 at. %, helicity-dependent all-optical switching of magnetization can be achieved, albeit in a multishot framework. We explain this property to arise from the helicity-dependent laser-induced magnetization on the Co sublattice due to the inverse Faraday effect. Our paper provides an insight into material aspects for future potential hybrid magnetoplasmonic TbCo-based architectures.

  • Magnetization precession after non-collinear dual optical excitation
  • 2024
  • In: Journal of Applied Physics. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 135:17

    • We investigate the impact of non-collinear dual optical excitation on magnetization precession in a permalloy thin film using two ultrashort laser pulses. By analyzing the magnetization dynamics using time-resolved magneto-optical methods, we find that excitation with two ultrashort optical pulses introduces a long-lasting modification of the electron system, as indicated by a sizable decrease in the precession frequency and a significant increase (approximately 25%) in the decay time. Our results reveal that the observed effect strongly depends on the respective polarizations of the two excitation pulses and the time delay between the two optical pulses. Our findings indicate the occurrence of a nonlinear opto-spin effect during photoexcitation with two interfering optical pulses, which can potentially be observed in various materials and at different photon wavelengths.

  • Orbital dynamics during an ultrafast insulator to metal transition
  • 2020
  • In: Physical Review Research. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2643-1564. ; 2:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present ultrafast resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments performed at the vanadium L edge to track changes in the electronic structure of V2O3, a classical Mott-Hubbard material. The probed orbital excitations within the d shell of the V ion show a sub-ps time response, which evolves at later times to a state that appears electronically indistinguishable from the high-temperature metallic state. For low excitation fluences, a transient recovery or delay is observed, which could be related to a transient dimerization of the V-V bonds. Our results demonstrate the great potential for RIXS spectroscopy to study the ultrafast orbital dynamics in strongly correlated materials.
