  • A Transition Towards Digital Home Visits in Social Care and Home Health Care During the Corona Pandemic
  • 2021
  • In: GLOBAL HEALTH 2021, The Tenth International Conference on Global Health Challenges. - : International Academy, Research and Industry Association (IARIA). - 9781612088921
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • During the pandemic, physical meetings were supposed to decrease as much as possible to avoid the virus to spread. Before the pandemic, the physical meeting favoured social care and home health care in Sweden. One solution was to digitize as many of these meetings as possible. Therefore, we investigated this transition in a web survey, including questions with predetermined and open-ended answers. The web-survey was sent to co-workers in home health care and social care in a middle-seized municipality in Sweden. The results showed that not all meetings could be transformed, like meetings with citizens with hearing or cognitive impairments. Challenges related to the transformation were instability in technical equipment, the professionals’ and citizens’ knowledge of handling technical equipment, and access to technical equipment support. Despite this did the co-workers digitize meetings whenever possible, adding operational and problem-solving attitude to the transformation. Due to this study’s limitation, like respondents from one municipality and the pandemic’s length, we intend to investigate further and understand the development of the transformation and how knowledge in the area increases.

  • Öppen Innovation, den digitala vägen : Den digitala vägen
  • 2021
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2020
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Experiences with and causes of work interruptions and fragmentation in academia - How can they be managed?
  • 2023
  • In: 26th Excellence In Services International Conference (EISIC). - 9791221039054
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this research is to explore experiences with and causes of the work interruptions and fragmentation that occur in the daily work of academic staff. This research also aims to explore strategies for managing these issues.Methodology: As part of a research project, data were collected from a workshop featuring academics to investigate their experiences of workfragmentation and the strategies they used to manage this issue. These academics were asked to individually write down ways of creating coherent time and their perceptions of the reasons underlying the fragmentation of work. They were then asked to discuss and reflect on this topic in groups based on their work roles, after which the groups’ answers were summarized. The written answers were analysed by a total of four researchers working on this project in two separate rounds.Findings: The analysis resulted in fourteen group labels of experiences and causes of work interruptions and fragmentation, including Knowledge, Resources, Communication, Unplanned tasks, Planning, Digital systems, Processes, Job duties, Administration, (Over)ambition, Meetings, Set-up time, Quality work and Help and support. In the analysis of the strategies used to manage work interruptions and fragmentation, seven groups were identified: Conscious planning to create space for coherent time, Need for knowledge that offers the ability to create coherent time, Control the communication, Support/lead, Working hours, Prioritize, and Respect others and their time.Research limitations/implications: The research was conducted by reference to a group of heads of subjects drawn from one university.Originality/Value: Qualitative research on interruptions and fragmentation in higher education institutes (HEI) is rare.

  • On the inclusion of sustainability and digitalisation in quality management : an overview from past to present
  • 2020
  • In: Total Quality Management and Business Excellence. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1478-3363 .- 1478-3371. ; , s. 1-23
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to explore whether trends in sustainability and digitalisation from the 1980s until today have left any significant practical or epistemological footprints on the quality management paradigm. The study design consists of a mixed-methods approach that applies a data-mining methodology and content analysis to the digital archives of eight scientific journals: six within the quality management (QM) domain and two with a focus on operations management (OM). The data set contains an unbroken time series of over 12,000 research paper abstracts, the first of them published in 1980, giving the study a coverage of almost 40 years. The findings show that sustainability came onto the scholarly scene in 1996 and has since become an increasingly popular research area. In regard to digitalisation, the story is quite different, as the concept is currently absent from the scholarly QM and OM literatures. However, a search for information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) revealed that these topics have been gaining attention since the 1980s. However, it was found that QM research only addresses one part of digitalisation, omitting several interesting dimensions. One example is that the QM and OM literatures address IS mainly in relation to standardised guidelines and business processes within organisations. At the same time, we found a handful of studies combining QM and topics related to modern digitisation, like social media.

  • Identifying Traces of Boundary Object Properties in Data Hub Development Narratives : Two Cases from Scandinavian Electricity Market
  • 2019
  • In: AMCIS 2019 Proceedings.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Digital technology enables multi-relational collaborations between parties with different experiences, knowledge, values, and goals. Regarding digital technology triggering enterprise transformation, boundary object as theoretical model for understanding such differences in development is not well understood, especially the ways boundary object emerges in practice. We inquired what traces of boundary object properties can be identified in data hub development narratives. An interpretive approach was chosen for understanding experience-centered narratives that origins from interviews conducted in two separate studies of national development of data hubs for the electricity market in Denmark and Sweden respectively. Through a literature review covering boundary objects, nine prosperities were chosen for the theoretical frame used in the interpretation of the narratives. The conclusion was that boundary object properties were part of the narratives of the data hub developments early on in the in-use taking processes and even before the digital artifact was taken into use.

  • Transformation of business collaboration in a digital age : Towards a multi-relation perspective
  • 2019
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The process of digitalisation is progressively transforming the way business is carried out and how enterprises collaborate. In this digital age, characterised by collaborations among a larger community of suppliers, customers, employees, and governments, all partners need to understand avariety of relations and how digitalisation transforms them. However, it is difficult to understand the multitude of unclear or even unknown relations generated by re-coordinating different types of relations in this digital age. Accordingly, this thesis contributes to the understanding of the transformation of business collaboration by exploring how collaboration can be understood in a digital age. The theoretical concepts involved collaboration, enterprise architecture, enterprise interoperability, and boundary object. These concepts enabled digging deeper into the complexity of sharing and aligning social and cultural worlds between communities of practice. The methodology employed was hermeneutics, which was suitable for understanding human activities. The study object concerned national development of data hubs for the electricity market in Denmark and Sweden, which replaced an old way of communicating point to point between companies. This was implemented in order to coordinate and manage data transactions between grid companies and electricity suppliers. The results indicated that digitalisation tends to increase the ability to manage collaboration and even closer relations among partners by clearly identifying every partner role and responsibility. Further, business collaboration appeared to transform from a traditional collaboration to a multi-relation collaboration that addressed digital age demands more comprehensively.

  • Why Action Research and Quality Management is such a Nice Match : And How to Make them Dance without Falling
  • 2018
  • In: Proceedings of the 21st QMOD conference.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose For anyone digging into the concepts, it becomes obvious that action research and quality management are a really nice match. They share many of their conceptual roots, intentions, core principles/dimensions and processes. Current best practice of quality management can even be understood as doing and strengthening action research processes, in terms of the Plan-do-study-act cycle (PDSA), in organizations. However, the choice, design and application of action research within quality management research is surprisingly seldom discussed or shared. The purpose of this paper is hence to elaborate on how action research and quality management are closely interrelated and how action research can be used more frequently and successfully in quality management research. In addition, the paper hopes to contribute to revitalizing what could be considered the most fundamental practice of quality management: the PDSA cycle.     Method The paper is based on a conceptual discussion combined with illustrative experiences and learnings from several research projects that have applied action research to develop the field of Quality Management. The projects and examples illustrate and share both experiences of dancing at its best and a few uncomfortable falls.   Findings The paper identifies several critical factors to consider when designing and applying action research within quality management research.    Practical Implications As action research is defined by its double aim, developing both scientific knowledge and practice, the ability to successfully design and apply action research in quality management research has large practical implications. One obvious risk if this dance fails is that academic researchers draw back from practice and their ambitions of developing and contributing to practice in their research. The findings of the paper are hoped to increase the number of successful future applications of action research within quality management.   Originality The study provide insights in an area sparsely discussed in previous academic work.

  • A Comparison of Three Approaches to Model Human Behavior
  • 2010
  • In: COMPUTING ANTICIPATORY SYSTEMS CASYS'09. - Liège : CHAOS. - 9780735408586 ; , s. 354-362
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • One way of studying social processes is through the use of simulations. The use of simulations for this purpose has been established as its own field, social simulations, and has been used for studying a variety of phenomena. A simulation of a social setting can serve as an aid for thinking about that social setting, and for experimenting with different parameters and studying the outcomes caused by them. When using the simulation as an aid for thinking and experimenting, the chosen simulation approach will implicitly steer the simulationist towards thinking in a certain fashion in order to fit the model. To study the implications of model choice on the understanding of a setting where human anticipation comes into play, a simulation scenario of a coffee room was constructed using three different simulation approaches: Cellular Automata, Systems Dynamics and Agent-based modeling. The practical implementations of the models were done in three different simulation packages: Stella for Systems Dynamic, CaFun for Cellular Automata and SesAM for Agent-based modeling. The models were evaluated both using Randers' criteria for model evaluation, and through introspection where the authors reflected upon how their understanding of the scenario was steered through the model choice. Further the software used for implementing the simulation models was evaluated, and practical considerations for the choice of software package are listed. It is concluded that the models have very different strengths. The Agent-based modeling approach offers the most intuitive support for thinking about and modeling a social setting where the behavior of the individual is in focus. The Systems Dynamics model would be preferable in situations where populations and large groups would be studied as wholes, but where individual behavior is of less concern. The Cellular Automata models would be preferable where processes need to be studied from the basis of a small set of very simple rules. It is further concluded that in most social simulation settings the Agent-based modeling approach would be the probable choice. This since the other models does not offer much in the way of supporting the modeling of the anticipatory behavior of humans acting in an organization.
