  • Interactions of diamond surfaces with fusion relevant plasmas
  • 2009
  • In: Physica scripta. T. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0281-1847 .- 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T138, s. 014013-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The outstanding thermal properties of diamond and its low reactivity towards hydrogen may make it an attractive plasma-facing material for fusion and calls for a proper evaluation of its behaviour under exposure to fusion-relevant plasma conditions. Micro and nanocrystalline diamond layers, deposited on Mo and Si substrates by hot filament chemical vapour deposition (CVD), have been exposed both in tokamaks and in linear plasma devices to measure the erosion rate of diamond and study the modification of the surface properties induced by particle bombardment. Experiments in Pilot-PSI and PISCES-B have shown that the sputtering yield of diamond (both physical and chemical) was a factor of 2 lower than that of graphite. Exposure to detached plasma conditions in the DIII-D tokamak have evidenced a strong resistance of diamond against erosion under those conditions.

  • The upgraded TOMAS device : A toroidal plasma facility for wall conditioning, plasma production, and plasma-surface interaction studies
  • 2021
  • In: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 92:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Toroidal Magnetized System device has been significantly upgraded to enable development of various wall conditioning techniques, including methods based on ion and electron cyclotron (IC/EC) range of frequency plasmas, and to complement plasma-wall interaction research in tokamaks and stellarators. The toroidal magnetic field generated by 16 coils can reach its maximum of 125 mT on the toroidal axis. The EC system is operated at 2.45 GHz with up to 6 kW forward power. The IC system can couple up to 6 kW in the frequency range of 10 MHz-50 MHz. The direct current glow discharge system is based on a graphite anode with a maximum voltage of 1.5 kV and a current of 6 A. A load-lock system with a vertical manipulator allows exposure of material samples. A number of diagnostics have been installed: single- and triple-pin Langmuir probes for radial plasma profiles, a time-of-flight neutral particle analyzer capable of detecting neutrals in the energy range of 10 eV-1000 eV, and a quadrupole mass spectrometer and video systems for plasma imaging. The majority of systems and diagnostics are controlled by the Siemens SIMATIC S7 system, which also provides safety interlocks.

  • Overview of the JET preparation for deuterium-tritium operation with the ITER like-wall
  • 2019
  • In: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 59:11
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D-T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D-T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D-T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D-T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D-T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D-T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the three-ions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfven eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems...) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D-T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D-T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

  • Fuel retention in carbon materials under ITER-relevant mixed species plasma conditions
  • 2009
  • In: Physica scripta. T. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0281-1847 .- 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T138, s. 014012-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Samples of CFC NB41 and fine-grain graphite ATJ have been exposed to PISCES plasmas containing (i) pure deuterium, (ii) deuterium and beryllium, (iii) deuterium, beryllium and helium, and (iv) deuterium, beryllium and argon. Thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS) and nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) have been used to measure the amount and distribution of retained deuterium in the samples. For the case of pure deuterium plasma, parametric studies of deuterium retention in NB41 have been done with variations of the incident deuterium fluence (Phi = 1 x 10(25)-5 x 10(26) m(-2)), ion energy (E-i = 20-120 eV) and sample surface temperature (T-s = 370-820 K). It has been found, that for T-s = 470K the retention scales as Phi(0.35). For T-s = 820K the retention saturates at a level of similar to 10(21) Dm(-2). The retention increases with E-i and drops with higher T-s. At T-s = 720 K, the beryllium seeding results in a building of a protective beryllium carbide layer, which appears to prevent the in-bulk diffusion of deuterium, thus reducing the retention. Admixture of Ar and, in the case of low E-i, He leads to a significant reduction of the retention.

  • Overview of progress in European medium sized tokamaks towards an integrated plasma-edge/wall solution
  • 2017
  • In: Nuclear Fusion. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 57:10
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Integrating the plasma core performance with an edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) that leads to tolerable heat and particle loads on the wall is a major challenge. The new European medium size tokamak task force (EU-MST) coordinates research on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), MAST and TCV. This multi-machine approach within EU-MST, covering a wide parameter range, is instrumental to progress in the field, as ITER and DEMO core/pedestal and SOL parameters are not achievable simultaneously in present day devices. A two prong approach is adopted. On the one hand, scenarios with tolerable transient heat and particle loads, including active edge localised mode (ELM) control are developed. On the other hand, divertor solutions including advanced magnetic configurations are studied. Considerable progress has been made on both approaches, in particular in the fields of: ELM control with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP), small ELM regimes, detachment onset and control, as well as filamentary scrape-off-layer transport. For example full ELM suppression has now been achieved on AUG at low collisionality with n = 2 RMP maintaining good confinement H-H(98,H-y2) approximate to 0.95. Advances have been made with respect to detachment onset and control. Studies in advanced divertor configurations (Snowflake, Super-X and X-point target divertor) shed new light on SOL physics. Cross field filamentary transport has been characterised in a wide parameter regime on AUG, MAST and TCV progressing the theoretical and experimental understanding crucial for predicting first wall loads in ITER and DEMO. Conditions in the SOL also play a crucial role for ELM stability and access to small ELM regimes.

  • Characterization of neutral particle fluxes from ICWC and ECWC plasmas in the TOMAS facility
  • 2021
  • In: Physica Scripta. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; 96:12
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Electron- (ECWC) and ion- (ICWC) cyclotron wall conditioning are essential means for controlled fusion to modify the surface state of plasma-facing components in order to reduce impurity generation and fuel accumulation in the wall. Development of ECWC and ICWC requires characterization of neutral particle fluxes generated in discharges, because neutrals enhance the homogeneity of the conditioning, which may contribute to remote or shadowed areas, especially in the presence of a permanent magnetic field (e.g. W7-X, ITER). A time-of-flight neutral particle analyzer (ToF-NPA) with 4.07 m flight distance is employed to measure time- and energy-resolved low energetic (<1 keV) neutral particle distributions. The ToF-NPA setup tested at the EXTRAP T2R reversed field pinch was installed at the TOMAS toroidal plasma facility to determine low energy neutral particle fluxes while investigating the impact of the gas pressure in the instrument and compatibility with low count rates during EC- and ICWC discharges. TOMAS has a major radius of 0.78 m and provides various plasma operation conditions: toroidal magnetic field up to 0.12 T, EC frequency 2.45 GHz with the power of 0.6-6 kW, IC frequency of 10-50 MHz with the power of up to 6 kW. Early results on the characterization of three phases (EC only, EC + IC, and IC only) of hydrogen discharges demonstrate: (i) the low energy (10-725 eV) neutrals distribution has been determined by the NPA system, (ii) the mixed EC + IC phase produces the highest population of neutral particles, while the EC only provides one order of magnitude lower rate, (iii) the neutrals produced in IC only have higher average energy (28 eV) than EC only (7 eV) and EC + IC (16 eV).

  • Deuterium inventory in Tore Supra : Coupled carbon-deuterium balance
  • 2013
  • In: Journal of Nuclear Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-3115 .- 1873-4820. ; 438:Suppl., s. S120-S125
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents an analysis of the carbon-deuterium circulation and the resulting balance in Tore Supra over the period 2002-2007. Carbon balance combines the estimation of carbon gross erosion from spectroscopy, net erosion and deposition using confocal microscopy, lock-in thermography and SEM, and a measure of the amount of deposits collected in the vacuum chamber. Fuel retention is determined from post-mortem (PM) analyses and gas balance (GB) measurements. Special attention was paid to the deuterium outgassed during the nights and weekends of the experimental campaign (vessel under vacuum, Plasma Facing Components at 120 degrees C) and during vents (vessel at atmospheric pressure, PFCs at room temperature). It is shown that this outgassing is the main process reconciling the PM and GB estimations of fuel retention, closing the coupled carbon-deuterium balance. In particular, it explains why the deuterium concentration in deposits decreases with increasing depth.
