- The thesis explains the design, fabrication, vertical test, higher order mode (HOM) and field emission study of the ESS superconducting medium beta (MB) cavity. The ESS MB cavity is a 6-cell elliptical cavity. The main criteria for a multicell elliptical cavity design are explained. The multicell elliptical cavity fabrication process is discussed. The vertical test results of the MB cavity are explained. The MB cavity HOM is studied and the effect of mechanical errors on a specific HOM frequency deviation through a systematic approach is explained. The HOM measurement results are explained, furthermore searching of a specific HOM, which specified as the dangerous HOM. The field emission dynamics of the MB cavity are studied through CST electron tracking. The electron tracking results are post-processed to count the number of impact electrons versus their impact energy.
