  • Demo Abstract: Securing Communication in 6LoWPAN with Compressed IPsec

    • With the inception of IPv6 it is possible to assign a unique ID to each device on planet. Recently, wireless sensor networks and traditional IP networks are more tightly integrated using IPv6 and 6LoWPAN. Real-world deployments of WSN demand secure communication. The receiver should be able to verify that sensor data is generated by trusted nodes and/or it may also be necessary to encrypt sensor data in transit. Available IPv6 protocol stacks can use IPsec to secure data exchanges. Thus, it is desirable to extend 6LoWPAN such that IPsec communication with IPv6 nodes is possible. It is beneficial to use IPsec because the existing end-points on the Internet do not need to be modified to communicate securely with the WSN. Moreover, using IPsec, true end-to-end security is implemented and the need for a trustworthy gateway is removed. In this demo we will show the usage of our implemented lightweight IPsec. We will show how IPsec ensures end-to-end security between an IP enabled sensor networks and the traditional Internet. This is the first compressed lightweight design, implementation, and evaluation of a 6LoWPAN extension for IPsec. This demo complements the full paper that will appear in the parent conference, DCOSS’11.

    • With the advent of wireless sensor networks (WSN) and success of wirelesscommunication in the local and personal area networks such asWi-Fi and Bluetoothmore serious efforts to apply standard wireless communication in sensitiveindustrial networks were initiated. This effort resulted in the standardizationof WirelessHART. Other standardization efforts include ISA 100.11a andZigBee. Keeping in mind the nature of wireless communication and sensitivityof industrial environments security of these network gets greater importance. In this thesis we work on security issues in industrial WSN in general andIP-connected WSN in particular. Currently WirelessHART is the only approvedstandard for secure wireless communication in industrial WSNs. Westart our work with the analysis of security mechanisms in WirelessHART.We propose solutions for the security shortcomings in WirelessHART, and designand implement the missing security components. Particularly, we specify,design, implement, and evaluate the first open security manager for WirelessHARTnetworks. With the standardization of IP in WSNs (6LoWPAN) and birth of Internetof Things the need for IP communication in industrial WSN is getting importance.The recently proposed ISA 100.11a standard is IP-based since its inception.Also standardization efforts are in progress to apply IP in WirelessHARTand Zigbee. Recently, WSNs and traditional IP networks are more tightly integratedusing IPv6 and 6LoWPAN. We realize the importance of having aninteroperable standardized secure IP communication in industrial WSNs. IPSecurity (IPsec) is a mandatory security solution in IPv6. We propose to useIPsec for 6LoWPAN enabled industrial WSNs. However, it is not meaningfulto use IPsec in its current form in resource constrained WSNs. In additionto providing security solutions for WirelessHART, in this thesis we also specify,design, implement, and extensively evaluate lightweight IPsec that enablesend-to-end secure communication between a node in a 6LoWPAN and a device in the traditional Internet. Our results show that lightweight IPsec is a sensibleand practical solution for securing WSN.

  • Developments in national climate change mitigation legislation and strategy

    • The results are presented from a survey of national legislation and strategies to mitigate climate change covering almost all United Nations member states between 2007 and 2012. This data set is distinguished from the existing literature in its breadth of coverage, its focus on national policies (rather than international pledges), and on the use of objective metrics rather than normative criteria. The focus of the data is limited to national climate legislation and strategies and does not cover subnational or sectoral measures. Climate legislation and strategies are important because they can: enhance incentives for climate mitigation; provide mechanisms for mainstreaming; and provide a focal point for actors. Three broad findings emerge. First, there has been a substantial increase in climate legislation and strategies between 2007 and 2012: 67% of global GHG emissions are now under national climate legislation or strategy compared to 45% in 2007. Second, there are substantial regional effects to the patterns, with most increases in non-Annex I countries, particularly in Asia and Latin America. Third, many more countries have adopted climate strategies than have adopted climate legislation between 2007 and 2012. The article concludes with recommendations for future research.Policy relevance The increase in climate legislation and strategy is significant. This spread suggests that, at the national level, there is some movement in reshaping climate governance despite the relatively slow pace of global negotiations, although the exact implications of this spread require further research on stringency of actions and their implementation. Asia and Latin America represent the biggest improvements, while OECD countries, which start from a high base, remain relatively stagnant. Implications of regional patterns are further refined by an analysis by emissions, which shows that some areas of low levels of legislation and strategy are also areas of relatively low emissions. A broad trend toward an emphasis on strategies rather than legislation, with the significant exception of China, calls for enhanced research into the practical impact of national non-binding climate strategies versus binding legislation on countries' actual emissions over time.

  • Influence of chemical reactions and turbulent diffusion on the formation of local pollutant concentration distributions

    • The mechanism of structure formation of non-uniform pollutant concentration distributions in indoor environments have been investigated over the past several decades to determine effective ventilation designs. In this study, numerical analyses of local pollutant concentration distributions in indoor environments are performed based on computational fluid dynamics techniques. In particular, the influence of gas phase chemical reactions and turbulent diffusion on the formation of the local pollutant concentration is parametrically analyzed, and the structures are quantitatively investigated using the index for ventilation efficiency, namely the net escape velocity (NEV) concept. The NEV concept represents the substantive velocity scale, combining advection and diffusion velocity of pollutant at a point, and functions as an index to determine the pollutant concentration at that point. Sensitivity analyses as functions of the first Damköhler number (Da) and the turbulent Schmidt number (Sct) were performed, and the influence of Sct on pollutant concentration distributions was more significant compared with that of Da. When Sct was changed from 0.5 to 1.0, the significant NEV increase, especially that in the stagnant flow region, could be attributed to the enhanced pollutant discharge efficiency due to turbulent diffusion in addition to convective flow. Thus, NEV could be used to quantitatively assess the changes in pollutant concentrations accompanying the change in Da or Sct.

    • The small-disturbance electro-mechanical dynamics of a power system can be translated to an equivalent circuit model with inductances and capacitances. Damping control of active power in proportion to local frequency as with a VSC-HVDC link or an energy storage then corresponds to introducing a resistor in the circuit model. This letter shows that impedance matching can be used to select resistor value, and equivalently damping controller gain, that gives maximum damping ratio. It is also shown how the concept is employed without a circuit model.
