  • No evidence for genetic linkage between development of multiple sclerosis and components of the IFN system and the JAK-STAT pathway.
  • 2004
  • In: Multiple Sclerosis Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 1477-0970 .- 1352-4585. ; 10:1, s. 87-88
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Several observations suggest that the interferon system may be of interest in the study of MS development. To investigate whether polymorphism in components of the IFN system and the JA K-STAT pathway influence susceptibility to MS, we performed a linkage analysis between polymorphic loci in or close to the IFN gamma, IFN gamma recepto r, IFN alpha/beta recepto r, JA K 1, STAT 1 and STAT 3 genes in 27 Swedish families with at least two members having MS. Tests for transmission disequilibrium and nonparametric linkage analysis gave negative results. We found no evidence for linkage between MS and any of these loci.

  • Outsourcing to a non-developed supplier market : The importance of operational aspects in outsourcing
  • 2013
  • In: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 19:4, s. 227-237
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article investigates how firms manage outsourcing in situations of a non-developed supplier market. This study followed the initial outsourcing activities and strategies of two case companies in the wood product manufacturing industry. The findings show that greater focus needs to be placed on operational aspects associated with non-developed supplier markets, which contrasts with the traditional strategic view of outsourcing. For practitioners, this article suggests that it is important to emphasise that the learning curve for a supplier can be lengthy, and also that alternative outsourcing routes are available when outsourcing to a non-developed supplier market.

  • Sales coordination : development of customer teams in ABB Sweden
  • 1998
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The purpose of this licentiate thesis is to contribute to the body of knowledge of the development of customer teams for key customers in industrial selling. The study covers issues of why customer teams are formed, the interaction between the team and the customer, as well as the organisation and development of the customer team. The focus of the study is contained in the following questions:What are the affecting factors and motives for the coordination of sales? What are the characteristics of the customer team work set-up?What are the results of the customer team work? The method employed was to compare two case studies of customer teams. The customer teams consisted of sales engineers from various ABB companies in Sweden. The two teams were formed for the customers Svedala-Arbrå and ABS Pumps. The empirical material was analysed primarily by comparing the two customer teams, using theories on coordination, combined with an analytical model on sales teams.A model was developed, describing the affecting factors on customer teams, the customer team work and the effects of the customer team.To increase shares in the already saturated market, was one of the most important drivers for the formation of customer teams. The customers in this study affected the customer team work primarily in terms of how the work was to be organised. Interdependence between selling companies and their sales conditions greatly affected the customer team work. The two teams were found to have differences in their characteristics. The first customer team followed guidelines more closely, had a more comprehensive approach with a larger customer team, and were more focused on the development of long-term relationships than the second team. The second customer team had more of a contingency approach towards its task. This team was also smaller, and the number of customer team participants was allowed to vary over time. For this customer team the most important aspect was the coordination of products in terms of technical as well as commercial issues.A number of customer team effects were found in the study. Of special importance were the tangible factors, such as the economic results, the product and system adaptations, and the intangible factors, such as the relationship development. In the border zone between the tangibles and intangibles were the synergetic effects which resulted from the joint type of sales activities.

  • A methylated lysine is a switch point for conformational communication in the chaperone Hsp90
  • 2020
  • In: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 11:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Methylation of a conserved lysine in C-terminal domain of the molecular chaperone Hsp90 was shown previously to affect its in vivo function. However, the underlying mechanism remained elusive. Through a combined experimental and computational approach, this study shows that this site is very sensitive to sidechain modifications and crucial for Hsp90 activity in vitro and in vivo. Our results demonstrate that this particular lysine serves as a switch point for the regulation of Hsp90 functions by influencing its conformational cycle, ATPase activity, co-chaperone regulation, and client activation of yeast and human Hsp90. Incorporation of the methylated lysine via genetic code expansion specifically shows that upon modification, the conformational cycle of Hsp90 is altered. Molecular dynamics simulations including the methylated lysine suggest specific conformational changes that are propagated through Hsp90. Thus, methylation of the C-terminal lysine allows a precise allosteric tuning of Hsp90 activity via long distances. Methylation of a lysine residue in Hsp90 is a recently discovered post-translational modification but the mechanistic effects of this modification have remained unknown so far. Here the authors combine biochemical and biophysical approaches, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and functional experiments with yeast and show that this lysine is a switch point, which specifically modulates conserved Hsp90 functions including co-chaperone regulation and client activation.

  • Demonstration of Gaze-Aware Video Streaming Solutions for Mobile VR
  • 2018
  • In: 2018 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces (VR). - 9781538633656 - 9781538633663
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This demo features an embodiment of Smart Eye-tracking Enabled Networking (SEEN), a novel content delivery method for optimizing the provision of 360° video streaming. SEEN relies on eye-gaze information from connected eye trackers to provide high quality, in real time, in the proximity of users' fixations points, while lowering the quality at the periphery of the users' fields of view. The goal is to exploit the characteristics of the human vision to reduce the bandwidth required for the mobile provision of future data intensive services in Virtual Reality (VR). This demo provides a tangible experience of the tradeoffs among bandwidth consumption, network performances (RTT) and Quality of Experience (QoE) associated with SEEN's novel content provision mechanisms.

  • Validation of a Qualification Procedure Applied to the Verification of Partial Discharge Analysers Used for HVDC or HVAC Networks
  • 2023
  • In: Applied Sciences. - : Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). - 2076-3417. ; 13:14
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The insulation condition of HVDC grids consisting of cable systems, GIS, and converters should be monitored by partial discharge (PD) analysers using artificial intelligence (AI) tools for efficient insulation diagnosis. Although there are many experiences of PD monitoring solutions developed for the supervision of the insulation condition of HVAC grids using PD analysers, there are no standardised requirements for their qualification available yet. The international technical specification TS IEC 62478 provides general rules for PD measurements using electromagnetic methods but does not define performance requirements for qualification tests. HVDC and HVAC PD analysers must be tested by unambiguous test procedures. This paper compiles experiences of using PD analysers with HFCT sensors in HVAC grids (cable systems, GIS, and AIS) to define a qualification procedure for HVAC systems. This procedure is applicable to HVDC grids (cable systems, GIS, AIS, and converters) because the particularities related to the insulation behaviour under HVDC voltage are also considered. Representative PD sources are discussed in HVAC and HVDC positive and negative polarity. The PD pulse trend of representative insulation defects in HVDC cable systems is quite different from that of HVAC grids. Special attention should be paid to the acquisition of PD signals in HVDC grids since few pulses appear in solid insulations, mainly during voltage changes (polarity reversals or surges), but rarely in continuous operation with constant direct voltage. A synthetic PD simulator has been developed to reproduce trains of PD pulses or noise signals, similar to those that can appear in the power network. A set of three functionality tests has been developed for qualification of the diagnostic capabilities of PD analysers working up to 30 MHz addressed to HVDC or HVAC grids: (1) PD recognition test, (2) PD clustering test, and (3) PD location test. This qualification procedure has been validated by means of a round-robin test performed by five research institutes (RISE, FFII, TUDelft, TAU, and UPM) using commercial and in-development AI PD recognition and clustering tools to demonstrate its robustness and applicability. Applying this qualification procedure, two PD methods for electrical detection and prevention of insulation defects have been approved, one for HVAC and the other for HVDC grids. © 2023 by the authors.
