  • Specialized sledge dogs accompanied Inuit dispersal across the North American Arctic

    • Domestic dogs have been central to life in the North American Arctic for millennia. The ancestors of the Inuit were the first to introduce the widespread usage of dog sledge transportation technology to the Americas, but whether the Inuit adopted local Palaeo-Inuit dogs or introduced a new dog population to the region remains unknown. To test these hypotheses, we generated mitochondrial DNA and geometric morphometric data of skull and dental elements from a total of 922 North American Arctic dogs and wolves spanning over 4500 years. Our analyses revealed that dogs from Inuit sites dating from 2000 BP possess morphological and genetic signatures that distinguish them from earlier Palaeo-Inuit dogs, and identified a novel mitochondrial clade in eastern Siberia and Alaska. The genetic legacy of these Inuit dogs survives today in modern Arctic sledge dogs despite phenotypic differences between archaeological and modern Arctic dogs. Together, our data reveal that Inuit dogs derive from a secondary pre-contact migration of dogs distinct from Palaeo-Inuit dogs, and probably aided the Inuit expansion across the North American Arctic beginning around 1000 BP.

    • Fluorescence microscopy is introduced as a low cost quality control process for nanoimprint lithography. To depict imprinted structures down to 1 mum lateral size and to detect residues down to 100 nm lateral size, the standard printable polymer mr-18000 is labelled with less than 0.1 wt.% fluorescent dye. Three different types of stamps are used to determine the dependence of the shape and size of stamp features in a series of imprints. The quality of a stamp is given by the sticking polymer residues per unit area. Fluorescence light images as well as visible light images are analysed. Changes in the area of the stamp covered with polymer as a function of the number of imprints is summarised in a statistical process chart. Adhesion was artificially induced in order to observe self cleaning of virgin stamps. They were detected and monitored, suggesting that this method is a suitable technique for quality control and that it could be easily adapted to the nanoimprint process.     • We investigate the critical properties of the spin-1 honeycomb antiferromagnet BaNi2V2O8, both below and above the ordering temperature T-N using neutron diffraction and muon spin rotation measurements. Our results characterize BaNi2V2O8 as a two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnet across the entire temperature range, displaying a series of crossovers from 2D XY to 2D XXZ and then to 2D Heisenberg behavior with increasing temperature. In particular, the extracted critical exponent of the order parameter reveals a narrow temperature regime close to T-N, in which the system behaves as a 2D XY antiferromagnet. Above T-N, evidence for Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior driven by vortex excitations is obtained from the scaling of the correlation length. Our experimental results are in agreement with classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations performed using microscopic magnetic model Hamiltonians for BaNi2V2O8.

  • A comparison of thermally and photochemically cross-linked polymers for nanoimprinting

    • The characteristics and benefits of two types of cross-linking prepolymers with low glass transition temperature (T-g) for nanoimprinting are reported. They are soluble in organic solvents and their solutions can be processed like those of common thermoplastics. The imprinted patterns receive high thermal and mechanical stability through cross-linking polymerization. The course of the polymerization was investigated to determine the appropriate conditions for the imprint process. In thermally cross-linked polymers mr-I 9000, the cross-linking occurs during imprinting. Process time and temperature depend on the polymerization rate. Volume shrinkage during the polymerization does not adversely affect imprinting. Photochemically cross-linked polymers mr-L 6000 make possible imprint temperatures below 100 T and short imprint times. The T-g of the prepolymer determines the imprint temperature. The cross-linking reaction and structural stabilization is performed after imprinting. 50-nm trenches and sub-50-nm dots confirm the successful application of the polymers.

  • Polymer stamps for nanoimprinting

    • Stamp fabrication for nanoimprinting can be significantly simplified, when specialized crosslinking polymers are applied to pattern definition. The polymer patterns can be used as stamps themselves. Two possibilities are reported: (1) An e-beam sensitive resist was developed, which enables the fabrication of polymer-on-silicon stamps. Patterns with a feature size of 70 nm could be created. (2) Full plastic stamps were obtained by a casting-moulding technique, which enable pattern transfer from any conventional mould. The quality of the two stamp variants were proved by imprinting experiments. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

    • Network-based biocomputation (NBC) is an alternative, parallel computation approach that can potentially solve technologically important, combinatorial problems with much lower energy consumption than electronic processors. In NBC, a combinatorial problem is encoded into a physical, nanofabricated network. The problem is solved by biological agents (such as cytoskeletal filaments driven by molecular motors) that explore all possible pathways through the network in a massively parallel and highly energy-efficient manner. Whereas there is currently a rapid development in the size and types of problems that can be solved by NBC in proof-of-principle experiments, significant challenges still need to be overcome before NBC can be scaled up to fill a technological niche and reach an industrial level of manufacturing. Here, we provide a roadmap that identifies key scientific and technological needs. Specifically, we identify technology benchmarks that need to be reached or overcome, as well as possible solutions for how to achieve this. These include methods for large-scale production of nanoscale physical networks, for dynamically changing pathways in these networks, for encoding information onto biological agents, for single-molecule readout technology, as well as the integration of each of these approaches in large-scale production. We also introduce figures of merit that help analyze the scalability of various types of NBC networks and we use these to evaluate scenarios for major technological impact of NBC. A major milestone for NBC will be to increase parallelization to a point where the technology is able to outperform the current run time of electronic processors. If this can be achieved, NBC would offer a drastic advantage in terms of orders of magnitude lower energy consumption. In addition, the fundamentally different architecture of NBC compared to conventional electronic computers may make it more advantageous to use NBC to solve certain types of problems and instances that are easy to parallelize. To achieve these objectives, the purpose of this roadmap is to identify pre-competitive research domains, enabling cooperation between industry, institutes, and universities for sharing research and development efforts and reducing development cost and time.
