  • Everyday life of parents with intellectual disabilities. : Order, routines and gender roles in time and space.
  • 2024
  • In: Book of abstract. Social work as an emancipatory practice.. - Göteborg.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This presentation is derived from a thesis chapter, that focuses on parenting among parents with intellectual disabilities. The study involved interviews with twenty-three parents, examining on how parenting is done in interaction with the child, with significant ‘others’ and the surroundings.  The presentation is focusing on how order and routines in the everyday life are important to the parents, to be able to practice the good and caring parenthood they strive for. Repeated time-specific routines and little geographical mobility create predictability, independence and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, and promote the experience that life is safe. In the short term, this promotes experiences of autonomy. The parents also describe very stable arrangements for how partners in a relationship distribute tasks and chores between them. This means that the parents have different roles and responsibilities regarding the children, which also contributes to clarifying expectations and creating order and stability. This is important to be able to display a functioning parenthood that is not questioned.  However, over the longer term, these gender roles seem to lay the foundation for a rigidity regarding mothers’ and fathers’ care that limits their autonomy. Women, carrying the primary practical responsibility for the child, find themselves constrained in other aspects of adulthood, with fewer opportunities for own income. This contributes to financial scarcity in the family and increases women’s dependence. Through these routines, created in everyday life, there is a systematic subordination of mothers to positions where they have less power.

  • "Jag vill gärna ha hjälp, men ta inte mina barn" : Föräldraskap hos föräldrar med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning

  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Parents with intellectual disabilities are seldomly heard in research about parenting. Based on the parents’ own voices, this thesis contributes to deepened knowledge about parenting among persons with intellectual disability. By listening to twenty-three parents, my purpose has been to illuminate how parents themselves understand their parenting. The study is mainly based on an interactionist perspective and focuses on how parenting is done.  To deal with the stigmatizing perceptions and to ward off a perceived threat that the children may be taken from them, the parents use several strategies. These strategies function as a way of counteracting the questioning of their parenting, but above all the parents emphasize giving their children a good childhood. In general, the parents experience that their care practices work well when children’s needs are practical and arise in a routinized close to everyday reality. With higher demands on the ability to improvise and financial resources, care is perceived as a greater challenge. Experiences of being listened to and receiving support can counteract feelings of being made suspicious and can promote autonomy and security. But the support can also give rise to feelings of dependence. This is especially valid for women.

  • Parents With Intellectual Disabilities : Experiences of Parenting and Parenthood in Sweden
  • 2019
  • In: Journal of Intellectual Disability Research. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0964-2633 .- 1365-2788. ; 63:7, s. 789-789
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Introduction: In recent decades, the conditions in Sweden for parenthood for persons with intellectual disabilities have changed. However, there is little knowledge about how Swedish parents themselves experience their parenthood. The purpose is to understand the aspects that parents consider central to their parenting and, how the community's support is experienced. Methods: The empirical material consists of interviews with parents with intellectual disabilities. Results: Parents strive to be “regular” parents. Being a responsible parent is described as an ideal. It is common that they receive practical and financial support from relatives. Community support has a major impact. Support efforts based on strengthening own parental abilities and compensating for deficiencies tend to be helpful and reduce dependency. Efforts aimed at monitoring parenting are, however, experienced as stressful. Several of the parents' children are taken into custody. Depending on whether custody decision is done by coercion or by consent, affects the subsequent relationship between parent and child. Implications: Their preoccupation on parenting ideal, indicates that they feel limited in deviating from the norms. Successful community support should consider support from relatives, be based on the parents' abilities and compensate for their limitations. The establishment of basic trust appears to be a key component.

  • Relationell autonomi och socialpedagogiska förhållningssätt i socialt arbete
  • 2024
  • In: Funktionsförmåga, funktionshinder och socialt arbete. - Malmö : Gleerups Utbildning AB. - 9789151112152 ; , s. 155-166
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
