  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Two of Cassian’s works, the Institutiones and the Collationes, are preserved in both Latin and Greek, and almost all scholars have taken it for granted that he wrote exclusively in Latin. This paper examines two passages from Cassian’s writings, one from the Institutiones (which has a parallel in an Evagrian florilegium) and the other from the Collationes. Arguing against the prevailing view, the paper provides evidence in support of the hypothesis that Cassian originally wrote the Institutiones in Greek. The paper highlights different theological emphases in the Latin and Greek versions and argues that in the translation of Cassian’s works also style, rhetoric, and theology were adapted.

  • Quantification of abdominal fat accumulation during hyperalimentation using MRI
  • 2009
  • In: Proceedings of the ISMRM Annual Meeting (ISMRM'09), 2009. - Berkeley, CA, USA : International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. ; , s. 206-
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • There is an increasing demand for imaging methods that can be used for automatic, accurate and quantitative determination of the amounts of abdominal fat. Such methods are important as they will allow the evaluation of some of the risk factors underlying the ’metabolic syndrome’. The metabolic syndrome is becoming common in large parts of the world, and it appears that a dominant risk factor for developing this syndrome is abdominal obesity. Subjects that are afflicted with the metabolic syndrome are exposed to a high risk for developing a large range of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiac failure, and stroke. The aim of this work

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Quantitative Abdominal Fat Estimation Using MRI
  • 2008
  • In: Proceedings - International Conference on Pattern Recognition. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781424421749 - 9781424421756 ; , s. 1-4
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper introduces a new method for automaticquantification of subcutaneous, visceral and nonvisceralinternal fat from MR-images acquired usingthe two point Dixon technique in the abdominal region. The method includes (1) a three dimensionalphase unwrapping to provide water and fat images, (2)an image intensity inhomogeneity correction, and (3) amorphon based registration and segmentation of thetissue. This is followed by an integration of the correctedfat images within the different fat compartmentsthat avoids the partial volume effects associated withtraditional fat segmentation methods. The method wastested on 18 subjects before and after a period of fastfoodhyper-alimentation showing high stability andperformance in all analysis steps.

  • Cardiovascular disease-linked plasma proteins are mainly associated with lung volume
  • 2023
  • In: ERJ Open Research. - : European Respiratory Society. - 2312-0541. ; 9:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown that impaired lung function is common and associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Increased levels of several inflammatory and cardiovascular disease-related plasma proteins have been associated with impaired lung function. The aim was to study the association between plasma proteomics and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC) and FEV1/FVC ratio.METHODS: We used a discovery and replication approach in two community-based cohorts, EpiHealth and the Malmö Offspring Study (total n=2874), to cross-sectionally study 242 cardiovascular disease- and metabolism-linked proteins in relation to FEV1, FVC (both % predicted) and FEV1/FVC ratio. A false discovery rate of 5% was used as the significance threshold in the discovery cohort.RESULTS: Plasma fatty acid-binding protein 4, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, interleukin-6 and leptin were negatively associated with FEV1 and paraoxonase 3 was positively associated therewith. Fatty acid-binding protein 4, fibroblast growth factor 21, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, interleukin-6 and leptin were negatively associated with FVC and agouti-related protein, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 2, paraoxonase 3 and receptor for advanced glycation end products were positively associated therewith. No proteins were associated with FEV1/FVC ratio. A sensitivity analysis in EpiHealth revealed only minor changes after excluding individuals with known cardiovascular disease, diabetes or obesity.CONCLUSIONS: Five proteins were associated with both FEV1 and FVC. Four proteins associated with only FVC and none with FEV1/FVC ratio, suggesting associations mainly through lung volume, not airway obstruction. However, additional studies are needed to investigate underlying mechanisms for these findings.
