  • Populism and populism studies Theories and contributions
  • 2023
  • In: Discourse Approaches to Politics, Society and Culture. - 1569-9463. ; 101, s. 17-34
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this chapter, we will lay the foundation for the case studies in the subsequent chapters. To this end, we will make explicit our understanding of populism, which links the individual contexts discussed in the remainder of this book. In this book, we define populism as a political strategy and/or practice, realised in discourse, that is based on a dichotomy between "the people", who are unified by their will, and an outgroup whose actions are not in the interest of the people, with a leader safeguarding the interests of the people against the outgroup. In addition, we will discuss relevant previous literature to identify the research gap in the study of populism and language, and argue how our book contributes to filling that gap. To achieve these two aims, we will first sketch the common theoretical background that informs all chapters of the book. We will develop a definition of populism and populist parties, paying particular attention to differences between right- and left-wing populism and indeed the validity of those terms themselves. Following on from those general considerations, we narrow the focus to the question how populism is realised in discourse and language use. We ask how populism and discourse are related and discuss the notion of populism as discourse. To conclude our theoretical discussion, we ask why populism has become a globalphenomenon and review what we know so far about voters and supporters of populist parties, candidates and causes. Moving from theory to a review of relevant previous works, the second main section of this chapter will position the book in relation to past discourse analytical research on populism. We start with a review of works on populism as it is enacted on social media, before proceeding to discuss what we already know about populism and language in European contexts. As this book is specifically about the way supporters of populist parties use language, we round off the second section of this chapter by reviewing work on that aspect. We conclude the chapter by demonstrating how the present book draws together three important aspects of populism - its expression on social media, its character across Europe and the role of supporters - and investigates them from a discourse analytical and linguistic point of view. First, however, let us turn to theoretical frameworks.

  • Berlinmuren
  • 2019
  • Other publication (sound/speech) (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Sweden "Go Jimmie go!" : The voices of Sweden Democrat supporters
  • 2023
  • In: Discourse Approaches to Politics, Society and Culture. - 1569-9463. ; 101, s. 257-279
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Sweden Democrats is a nationalist right-wing populist party with roots in neo-Nazism and white supremacist beliefs. The party has experienced continuous progress during the last decade in Sweden, attracting 20.5 per cent of the vote in the general election of 2022. A combination of discourse analytical methods is applied to study the comment sections of the party's official social media accounts during the EU election 2019 in order to explore what topics are most engaging to the supporters and what discursive strategies the supporters use to position themselves in relation to politicians, to other parties or to political topics. Particular attention is paid to the role of affirmative and evaluative practices to build ingroup identity.

  • «Und denn hemmer eifach e Burka bracht» : Sprachwissenschaftliche Studien zu Memes im politischen Diskurs in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz
  • 2023
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In this compilation thesis I examine Internet memes within the political discourse of the three major German-speaking countries Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The analysis incorporates several theoretical and methodological approaches, including politolinguistics and discourse studies, text linguistics, multimodality theory and media linguistics. The central driving questions of this research are as follows:How does political language manifest visually and textually in memes? What role do the Internet, social network platforms, and their affordances play in the creation and dissemination of memes? How do memes contribute to diverse political discourses? Three distinct studies examine memes within different contexts to address these questions:Study 1 investigates memes as satirical texts, analyzing a collection of memes published by two German TV news parodies on their Facebook platform. These memes focus on the 2017 G-20 summit held in Hamburg. The dataset comprises 27 memes, along with public Facebook comments accompanying these memes. Applying medialinguistic approaches and concepts from discourse analysis, this study explores how memes employ satire and interact with the Internet as a medium, particularly on the Facebook platform.Study 2 concentrates on memes within political campaigns. For this purpose, a collection of 64 memes published on the Swiss political group Operation Libero's Facebook page during referendum campaigns was gathered. A close reading, drawing from both multimodality theory and the discourse historical approach, addresses questions about how arguments are constructed within internet memes in terms of both image and text, as well as how memes interact with the broader political discourse.Study 3 examines memes from Austria, Germany and Switzerland as populist texts, applying Moffitt's conceptualization of populist style (2016). A data-based investigation rooted in the discourse historical approach and multimodality theory analyzes memes with varying political alignments. The study assesses how these memes express features of populist style, such as the appeal to the people vs. the elite, the use of bad manners, and the performance of crisis. Special focus is given to the political context and the semiotic resources used to convey populist themes. The introductory chapter provides insights into various definitions of memes and their historical development, culminating in the identification of eight prototypical characteristics. These characteristics serve as the foundation for subsequent analyses. In summary, this research underscores the significance of memes as a mode of political expression in the digital age. Analyzing political memes provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of political language and discourse in an increasingly online political environment.

  • Voices of Supporters : Populist parties, social media and the 2019 European elections
  • 2023
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This book addresses an under-researched area within populism studies: the discourse of supporters of populist parties. Taking the 2019 European elections as their case study, the authors analyse how supporters in eleven different countries construct identities and voting motivations on social media. The individual chapters comprise a range of methods to investigate data from different social media platforms, defining populism as a political strategy and/or practice, realised in discourse, that is based on a dichotomy between “the people”, who are unified by their will, and an out-group whose actions are not in the interest of the people, with a leader safeguarding the interests of the people against the out-group. The book identifies what motivates people to vote for populist parties, what role national identities and values play in those motivations, and how the social media postings of populist parties are recontextualised in supporters’ comments to serve as a voting motivation.
