  • Paper test strip for silver ions detection in drinking water samples based on combined fluorometric and colorimetric methods

    • In this study, a portable silver ion (Ag+) sensor was fabricated based on a dual signal output system using black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) as probes. It is the first work for Ag+ detection using paper test strip based on BPQDs. The color change of BPQDs paper sensor for the determination of Ag+ was easily identified by naked eye. BPQDs were synthesized from bulk black phosphorus (BP) by mechanical exfoliation combined with a solvothermal method. BPQDs exhibited blue fluorescence with a quantum yield of 8.82 %. The fluorescence of BPQDs can be quenched by Ag+, and the absorbance of BPQDs is increased with increasing Ag+ concentration. The mechanism of the interaction between BPQDs and Ag+ involving fluorescence quenching and bonding was investigated by experimental and computational methods. The detection limit of Ag+ was 1.56 μg/mL and 0.19 μg/mL using fluorometry and colorimetry methods, respectively. A portable visual sensor based on paper test strip was constructed for Ag+ detection using the colorimetric approach. The strategy was employed to determine Ag+ successfully in drinking water samples. Therefore, the proposed portable Ag+ sensor can be potentially utilized for the lab-free analysis of drinking water and even dietary samples.

    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2019 is the seventh annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of 81 trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis as well as the standard VOT methodology for long-term tracking analysis. The VOT2019 challenge was composed of five challenges focusing on different tracking domains: (i) VOT-ST2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB, (ii) VOT-RT2019 challenge focused on "real-time" short-term tracking in RGB, (iii) VOT-LT2019 focused on long-term tracking namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. Two new challenges have been introduced: (iv) VOT-RGBT2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB and thermal imagery and (v) VOT-RGBD2019 challenge focused on long-term tracking in RGB and depth imagery. The VOT-ST2019, VOT-RT2019 and VOT-LT2019 datasets were refreshed while new datasets were introduced for VOT-RGBT2019 and VOT-RGBD2019. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term, long-term tracking and tracking with multi-channel imagery. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. The dataset, the evaluation kit and the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

    • Immunization strategies against commensal bacterial pathogens have long focused on eradicating asymptomatic carriage as well as disease, resulting in changes in the colonizing microflora with unknown future consequences. Additionally, current vaccines are not easily adaptable to sequence diversity and immune evasion. Here, we present a "smart" vaccine that leverages our current understanding of disease transition from bacterial carriage to infection with the pneumococcus serving as a model organism. Using conserved surface proteins highly expressed during virulent transition, the vaccine mounts an immune response specifically against disease-causing bacterial populations without affecting carriage. Aided by a delivery technology capable of multivalent surface display, which can be adapted easily to a changing clinical picture, results include complete protection against the development of pneumonia and sepsis during animal challenge experiments with multiple, highly variable, and clinically relevant pneumococcal isolates. The approach thus offers a unique and dynamic treatment option readily adaptable to other commensal pathogens.

  • Investigation of characteristics of splash lubrication and churning power loss in gearboxes with a guide plate

    • In order to clarify the action mechanism of the guide plate's influence on the oil flow and power loss of the gearbox, this paper investigates the churning loss and lubrication performance of the gearbox with guide plate based on an advanced MPS method. The numerical results were compared with the existing experimental results to verify the applicability and accuracy of the numerical method. The effects of rotational speed and oil immersion depth on the oil flow in the gearbox were analyzed, and the structural parameters of the guide plate were changed to reduce the churning loss. It is found that the total churning loss decreases due to the effect of the guide plate, which is related to the weakening of the turbulent kinetic energy, the weakening of the aeration phenomenon and the reduction of the churning loss at the periphery and end face of the gears. In general, the smaller radial and axial clearance between the guide plate and the gears corresponds to lower churning loss and better lubrication performance.

    • Alloy 718 is a Ni-Fe-based superalloy, which has been successfully adapted to powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing because of the alloys adaptability with such emerging technology in achieving enhanced mechanical properties. Despite a promising perspective for PBF-built Alloy 718 in different industries, a few factors, including microstructural non-uniformities, volumetric defects, undesired non-metallic inclusions, anisotropic behavior, residual stress, as well as surface and sub-surface irregularities, lead to premature fatigue life of the parts. However, the PBF technology has been quickly growing, and associate progress has resulted in substantial advances in quality, hence increased fatigue life of the parts. Therefore, a critical assessment of the efficacy of the PBF-built Alloy 718 parts can be highly enlightening. A fundamental understanding of the relationship between feedstock material, manufacturing process, process parameters, microstructure, properties, and fatigue life of PBF-built Alloy 718 is crucial for improving the characteristics of the current materials, designing new alloy systems, and enhancing the capability of the PBF techniques. The present paper aims to comprehensively review the fundamentals and recent advances in the PBF-built Alloy 718 parts with improved fatigue life, the influence of thermal and mechanical post-treatment, mechanisms of fatigue crack initiation and growth, thermo-mechanical fatigue, dwell-time fatigue, as well as fracture behavior in different loading conditions and environments considering anisotropic characteristics of the material. An unbiased review of the literature provides an understanding of the advanced and outstanding achievements in the field that assure further research. An evaluation of the status of the field, the gaps in the theoretical understanding, and the fundamental needs for the sustainable development of PBFbuilt Alloy 718 with enhanced fatigue life in specific applications are also provided.

  • The Seventeenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys : Complete Release of MaNGA, MaStar, and APOGEE-2 Data

    • This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.

  • Tunable metal hydroxide-organic frameworks for catalysing oxygen evolution

    • The oxygen evolution reaction is central to making chemicals and energy carriers using electrons. Combining the great tunability of enzymatic systems with known oxide-based catalysts can create breakthrough opportunities to achieve both high activity and stability. Here we report a series of metal hydroxide–organic frameworks (MHOFs) synthesized by transforming layered hydroxides into two-dimensional sheets crosslinked using aromatic carboxylate linkers. MHOFs act as a tunable catalytic platform for the oxygen evolution reaction, where the π–π interactions between adjacent stacked linkers dictate stability, while the nature of transition metals in the hydroxides modulates catalytic activity. Substituting Ni-based MHOFs with acidic cations or electron-withdrawing linkers enhances oxygen evolution reaction activity by over three orders of magnitude per metal site, with Fe substitution achieving a mass activity of 80 A g−1catalyst at 0.3 V overpotential for 20 h. Density functional theory calculations correlate the enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity with the MHOF-based modulation of Ni redox and the optimized binding of oxygenated intermediates.

  • High sensitive assay of formaldehyde using resonance light scattering technique based on carbon dots aggregation

    • Formaldehyde (FA) is widely used in industry and also common in daily life. Finding an efficient method to determine FA is quite an industrial challenge. Herein, a novel method based on a resonance light scattering (RLS) technique was developed for the detection of FA with high sensitivity. Carbon dots (CDs) were used as RLS probes. CDs were obtained via one-pot solvothermal treatment from o-phenylenediamine. CDs showed yellow fluorescence with a quantum yield of 0.41. Due to the multiple amino groups on the surface of CDs, FA can be captured easily by formation of a covalent C = N bond based on the Schiff-base reaction. Owing to the covalent crosslinking, CD nanoparticles aggregated, and even formed precipitate. The aggregation of CDs induced RLS enhancement, where the RLS increment was linearly related to the concentration of FA ranging from 4 nM to 1.6 mM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.6 nM. In comparison with many previous reports, the present RLS method showed a wider linear range and lower LOD. Furthermore, the RLS system was successfully used to detect FA in real food samples. The proposed system has prospective applicability in the detection of FA in food fields.
