  • Phase-Sensitive Amplified Optical Link Operating in the Nonlinear Transmission Regime
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 38th European Conference on Optical Communication and Exhibition, ECOC 2012, Amsterdam, 16-20 September 2012.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We characterize a phase-sensitive amplifier (PSA) after an 80km fiber span, carrying a single DQPSK channel in the nonlinear transmission regime. The system penalty with increasing intrachannel nonlinear distortion is similar for EDFA and PSA based systems, indicating that the PSA sensitivity advantage remain with nonlinear transmission.

  • CANopen.NET - Programming-less interconnection between GUI- and control-application
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International CAN Conference (iCC), Stockholm.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the novel concept CANopen.NET. In this concept we integrate Windows GUI-programming in .NET and control-applications based on CANopen. The integration is automated, thus no programming is needed. An increasing number of CAN-based systems are equipped with Windows-based graphical user-interfaces (GUIs). Today, the .NET framework provides the most attractive solutions for design of GUIs both i Windows and WindowsCE. However, transferring information between the CANopen-domain (which is typically unmanaged code) and the .NET-domain (managed code) is non trivial. Traditional methods require handwritten pieces of code both in the managed and unmanaged domain for each signal (object-dictionary entry). This means that adding or modifying signals to the system becomes tedious, error-prone and expensive. In .NET high-level abstractions like XML-documents, web-servers and databases are easily accessible and can be bound to graphical controls. Hence, in CANopen.NET we provide a .NET-database interface via the .NET type "dataset" to the data in the object dictionary. This dataset is automatically generated from a CANopen profile-specification (EDS-file). Also, the CANopen-stack is automatically configured from the EDS-file. Hence, CANopen.NET provides a programming-less interconnection between CANopen-based control-applications and Windows.NET-based GUI-applications. This significantly eases the development of CANopen-systems with GUIs.

  • All-optical phase and amplitude regenerator for next-generation telecommunications systems
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 4:10, s. 690-695
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fibre-optic communications systems have traditionally carried data using binary (on-off) encoding of the light amplitude. However, next-generation systems will use both the amplitude and phase of the optical carrier to achieve higher spectral efficiencies and thus higher overall data capacities. Although this approach requires highly complex transmitters and receivers, the increased capacity and many further practical benefits that accrue from a full knowledge of the amplitude and phase of the optical field more than outweigh this additional hardware complexity and can greatly simplify optical network design. However, use of the complex optical field gives rise to a new dominant limitation to system performance—nonlinear phase noise. Developing a device to remove this noise is therefore of great technical importance. Here, we report the development of the first practical (‘black-box’) all-optical regenerator capableof removing both phase and amplitude noise from binary phase-encoded optical communications signals.

  • Enabling future internet research : the FEDERICA case
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Magazine. - : IEEE. - 0163-6804 .- 1558-1896. ; 49:7, s. 54-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Internet, undoubtedly, is the most influential technical invention of the 20th century that affects and constantly changes all aspects of our day-to-day lives nowadays. Although it is hard to predict its long-term consequences, the potential future of the Internet definitely relies on future Internet research. Prior to every development and deployment project, an extensive and comprehensive research study must be performed in order to design, model, analyze, and evaluate all impacts of the new initiative on the existing environment. Taking the ever-growing size of the Internet and the increasing complexity of novel Internet-based applications and services into account, the evaluation and validation of new ideas cannot be effectively carried out over local test beds and small experimental networks. The gap which exists between the small-scale pilots in academic and research test beds and the realize validations and actual deployments in production networks can be bridged by using virtual infrastructures. FEDERICA is one of the facilities, based on virtualization capabilities in both network and computing resources, which creates custom-made virtual environments and makes them available for Future Internet Researchers. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art research projects that have been using the virtual infrastructure slices of FEDERICA in order to validate their research concepts, even when they are disruptive to the test bed’s infrastructure, to obtain results in realistic network environments.

  • The 2024 Europe report of the lancet countdown on health and climate change : unprecedented warming demands unprecedented action
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The Lancet Public Health. - : Elsevier. - 2468-2667. ; 9:7, s. e495-e522
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Record-breaking temperatures were recorded across the globe in 2023. Without climate action, adverse climate-related health impacts are expected to worsen worldwide, affecting billions of people. Temperatures in Europe are warming at twice the rate of the global average, threatening the health of populations across the continent and leading to unnecessary loss of life. The Lancet Countdown in Europe was established in 2021, to assess the health profile of climate change aiming to stimulate European social and political will to implement rapid health-responsive climate mitigation and adaptation actions. In 2022, the collaboration published its indicator report, tracking progress on health and climate change via 33 indicators and across five domains. This new report tracks 42 indicators highlighting the negative impacts of climate change on human health, the delayed climate action of European countries, and the missed opportunities to protect or improve health with health-responsive climate action. The methods behind indicators presented in the 2022 report have been improved, and nine new indicators have been added, covering leishmaniasis, ticks, food security, health-care emissions, production and consumption-based emissions, clean energy investment, and scientific, political, and media engagement with climate and health. Considering that negative climate-related health impacts and the responsibility for climate change are not equal at the regional and global levels, this report also endeavours to reflect on aspects of inequality and justice by highlighting at-risk groups within Europe and Europe's responsibility for the climate crisis.

  • Improving the Energy Efficiency of Cellular IoT Device
  • 2023
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Cellular Internet of Things (CIoT) has emerged as a promising technology to support applications that generate infrequent data. One requirement on these applications, often battery-powered devices, is low energy consumption to enable extended battery life. Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) is a promising technology for IoT due to its low power consumption, which is essential for devices that need to run on battery power for extended periods. However, the current battery life of NB-IoT devices is only a few years, which is insufficient for many applications. This thesis investigates the impact of energy-saving mechanisms standardized by 3GPP on battery life of NB-IoT devices. The main research objective is to classify and analyze existing energy-saving solutions for CIoT and examine their limitations, to study the impact of standardized energy-saving mechanisms on the battery life of NB-IoT devices, both in isolation and combined, and to provide guidelines on how to configure NB-IoT devices to reduce energy consumption efficiently. The research aims to provide a deeper understanding of the effect of energy-saving mechanisms and best practices to balance energy efficiency and performance of NB-IoT devices. Applying the proposed solutions makes it possible to achieve a battery life of 10~years or more for CIoT devices.

  • Oligotyping reveals divergent responses of predation resistant bacteria to aquatic productivity and plankton composition
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Predation-resistance has been suggested to be a key for persistence of pathogenic bacteria in aquatic environments. Little is known about driving factors for different types of protozoa resistant bacteria (PRB). We studied if presence of PRB is linked to specific plankton taxa, the aquatic nutrient state, or predation pressure on bacteria. Nineteen freshwater systems were sampled and analyzed for PRB, plankton composition and physicochemical variables. Three PRB genera were identified; Pseudomonas, Mycobacterium and Rickettsia. Use of minimum entropy decomposition algorithm and phylogenetic analysis showed that different nodes (representing OTUs of high taxonomic resolution) matched to environmental isolates of the three genera. Links between the PRB genera and specific plankton taxa were found, but showed different relationships depending on if 18S rRNA OTU or microscopy data were used in the analysis. Mycobacterium spp. was negatively correlated to aquatic nutrient state, while Pseudomonas showed the opposite pattern. Rickettsia spp. was positively related to predation pressure on bacteria. Both Mycobacterium and Rickettsia were more abundant in systems with high eukaryotic diversity, while Pseudomonas occurred abundantly in waters with low prokaryotic diversity. The different drivers may be explained by varying ecological strategies, where Mycobacterium and Rickettsia are slow growing and have an intracellular life style, while Pseudomonas is fast growing and opportunistic. Here we give an insight to the possibilities of newly advanced methods such as sequencing and oligotyping to link potential pathogens with biomarkers. This as a tool to assist predictions of the occurrence and persistence of environmental pathogens.

  • A transcriptional timetable of autumn senescence
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Genome Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1465-6906 .- 1474-760X. ; 5:4, s. R24-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background We have developed genomic tools to allow the genus Populus (aspens and cottonwoods) to be exploited as a full-featured model for investigating fundamental aspects of tree biology. We have undertaken large-scale expressed sequence tag (EST) sequencing programs and created Populus microarrays with significant gene coverage. One of the important aspects of plant biology that cannot be studied in annual plants is the gene activity involved in the induction of autumn leaf senescence. Results On the basis of 36,354 Populus ESTs, obtained from seven cDNA libraries, we have created a DNA microarray consisting of 13,490 clones, spotted in duplicate. Of these clones, 12,376 (92%) were confirmed by resequencing and all sequences were annotated and functionally classified. Here we have used the microarray to study transcript abundance in leaves of a free-growing aspen tree (Populus tremula) in northern Sweden during natural autumn senescence. Of the 13,490 spotted clones, 3,792 represented genes with significant expression in all leaf samples from the seven studied dates. Conclusions We observed a major shift in gene expression, coinciding with massive chlorophyll degradation, that reflected a shift from photosynthetic competence to energy generation by mitochondrial respiration, oxidation of fatty acids and nutrient mobilization. Autumn senescence had much in common with senescence in annual plants; for example many proteases were induced. We also found evidence for increased transcriptional activity before the appearance of visible signs of senescence, presumably preparing the leaf for degradation of its components.
