- I rapporten kan du ta del av bedömningen som görs av situationen för bestånd som regleras inom ramen för EU:s gemensamma fiskeripolitik (GFP). Bedömningarna baseras på det forskningssamarbete och den rådgivning som sker inom det Internationella Havsforskningsrådet (ICES).De bestånd som förvaltas nationellt baseras på de biologiska underlagen, och rådgivningen i huvudsak på den forskning och övervakning samt analys som bedrivs av Institutionen för akvatiska resurser vid Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet (SLU Aqua) samt yrkesfiskets rapportering.Rapporten omfattar 41 fiskarter uppdelade i olika bestånd, samt sju skal- och blötdjursarter.Nytt för årets upplaga är kapitlet om ekosystemtjänster. Avsnittet beskriver de fördelar människan får genom ekosystemen, till exempel hur fisk och skaldjur kommer till nytta för människan genom föda, rekreation och biologisk mångfald. Nytt för i år är också att rapportens diagram och figurer anpassats för läsare med defekt färgseende.Översikten är utarbetad av SLU Aqua på uppdrag av Havs- och vattenmyndigheten.

Effects of Tobacco Smoke on IL-16 in CD8+ Cells from Human Airways and Blood: a Key Role for Oxygen Free Radicals?

- Chronic exposure to tobacco smoke leads to an increase in the frequency of infections and in CD8(+) and CD4(+)cells as well as the CD4(+) chemo-attractant cytokine IL-16 in the airways. Here, we investigated whether tobacco smoke depletes intracellular IL-16 protein and inhibits de novo production of IL-16 in CD8(+) cells from human airways and blood, while at the same time increasing extracellular IL-16 and whether oxygen free radicals (OFR) are involved. Intracellular IL-16 protein in CD8(+) cells and mRNA in all cells was decreased in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples from chronic smokers. This was also the case in human blood CD8(+) cells exposed to water-soluble tobacco smoke components in vitro; in which oxidized proteins were markedly increased. Extracellular IL-16 protein was increased in cell-free BAL fluid from chronic smokers and in human blood CD8(+) cells exposed to water-soluble tobacco smoke components in vitro. This was not observed in occasional smokers after short-term exposure to tobacco smoke. A marker of activation (CD69) was slightly increased whereas other markers of key cellular functions (membrane integrity, apoptosis and proliferation) in human blood CD8(+) cells in vitro were negatively affected by water-soluble tobacco smoke components. An OFR scavenger prevented these effects whereas a protein synthesis inhibitor, a beta-adrenoceptor, a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, a phosphodiesterase, a calcineurin phosphatase and a caspase-3 inhibitor did not. In conclusion, tobacco smoke depletes preformed intracellular IL-16 protein, inhibits its de novo synthesis and distorts key cellular functions in human CD8(+) cells. OFR may play a key role in this context.

- Detta är den nionde utgåvan av den samlade översikten över fisk- och kräftdjursbeståndens status i våra vatten. Kunskap om fiskbestånden och miljön är en förutsättning för att utnyttjandet av fiskresurserna skall bli bärkraftigt. För svenska vattenområden beskrivs miljöutvecklingen i ett ekosystemsperspektiv, dels för att tydliggöra fiskens ekologiska roll och beskriva yttre miljöfaktorer som påverkar fiskbestånden, dels för att belysa fiskets effekter på miljön.Fiskbestånd och miljö i hav och sötvatten är utarbetad av Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet (SLU), Institutionen för akvatiska resurser (SLU Aqua), på uppdrag av Havs- och vattenmyndigheten. Rapporten sammanfattar utveckling och beståndsstatus för de kommersiellt viktigaste fisk- och kräftdjursarterna i våra vatten. Bedömningar och förvaltningsråd är baserade på Internationella Havsforskningsrådets (ICES) rådgivning, SLU Aquas nationella och regionala provfiskedata, samt yrkesfiskets rapportering.

- This Research Report consists of five artics, all of which concern the process of "Job-choice". In the first article, written by Olsson and Rundblad, a method of choice-analysis is applied, originally outlined by Boalt & Janson at the University of Stockholm. Dahlström and Sjöstrand, in the nest articles, discuss some of the methodological difficulties that arise througt the application of the Boalt - jansson-model. Dahlström here suggests a dodification of their model, which, in the fourth article, he make an attempt to test, thereby somparing his results with those obtained by Olsson - Rundblad. In the last article, finally, Dahlström suggests a more general fram of of reference for the analysis of individual choice - or change - mechanisms in the job-sphere.

- Den officiella statistiken över mängd fångad fisk, fångstområden, använda fiskredskap etc. har hittills i huvudsak lagts upp för att belysa olika ekonomiska aspekter av det svenska fisket. Statistik över fisktillgångar och fiske med avseende på hushållning med havens levande resurser, biologisk mångfald och andra naturvårdsaspekter har inte haft någon framträdande plats i statistikproduktionen. Arbetsgruppen för Naturstatistik vid Naturvårdsverket och Statistiska centralbyrånhar i samverkan med företrädare för Fiskeriverket bedömt att ”fisktillgångar och fiske” bör vara ett prioriterat område vid utveckling av statistik inom programmet för naturstatistik med utgångspunkt i Naturvårdsverkets aktionsprogram för naturvård, Natur "90.En informell arbetsgrupp med företrädare för Fiskeriverket, Naturvårdsverket och Statistiska centralbyrån har funnit att ett utvecklingsarbete bör påbörjas för att i statistiska termer belysa utvecklingen av fisk- och skaldjursresurser. Gruppens arbete har som ett första steg resulterat i föreliggande rapport

- BACKGROUND: A recent study demonstrated that intratracheal administration of the T-lymphocyte cytokine IL-17 recruits neutrophils into airways in vivo by C-X-C chemokine release. It is not known whether IL-17 may also activate airway neutrophils. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to evaluate whether IL-17 activates neutrophils in airways in vivo and, if so, whether the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1beta modulates this action of IL-17. METHODS: Intratracheal administration of human (h) IL-17 or rat (r) IL-1beta or hIL-17 plus rIL-1beta in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing rats was followed by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) 6 hours later. The BAL fluid was characterized in terms of neutrophil count, of the activity for myeloperoxidase (MPO), and in some cases of the activity for elastase (ELA). Isolated rat neutrophils were stimulated with hIL-17 in vitro, followed by characterization of MPO activity in the cell medium. RESULTS: hIL-17 (1 microg) increased the ELA and the MPO activity, as well as the neutrophil count in BAL fluid, whereas the proinflammatory cytokine rIL-1beta (2.5 ng) did not. Pretreatment with rIL-1beta enhanced IL-17induced ELA and MPO activity, without increasing the neutrophil count. The BAL ELA activity was inhibited by a specific inhibitor of neutrophil serine proteases. Stimulation with hIL-17 in vitro did not increase MPO activity in isolated neutrophils. CONCLUSION: IL-17 can activate neutrophils in association with their recruitment into the airways in vivo and this effect is probably achieved through induced release of mediators from other airway cells.

- AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of two different Swedish screening procedures for early detection of congenital cataracts in comparison with no screening. METHODS: Children born between January 1992 and December 1998 in Swedish regions with an established eye-screening routine procedure, diagnosed with congenital cataract, and operated on before 1 y of age, were included in a retrospective study. Age at referral and age at time of the operation were compared between regions using different screening procedures: screening in the maternity wards (Region 1), at the well-baby clinics (Region 2) and one region without any screening (Region 3). RESULTS: Seventy-two children were included in the study. Concerning early diagnosis and surgery, Region 1 differed significantly from Regions 2 and 3, which were more similar and were combined for further analysis. The difference in detected cases was greatest at 21 d of age (55% vs 18%; p < 0.001), but persisted even at 100 d of age (78% vs 64%; p < 0.02). Region 1 screening resulted in more and earlier cases detected than the other two regions (22 vs 15 per 100,000 births). In 72% of all cases, surgery was performed in response to referrals from either the maternity wards (36%), or the well-baby clinics (36%). However, half of the cases from the well-baby clinics were detected too late, i.e. at > 100 d. CONCLUSION: Eye screening in the maternity ward is preferable to well-baby clinic screening and to no screening at all, since it leads to early detection. Screening should also be performed routinely at well-baby clinics within the period when successful treatment is possible.

Genome-wide probabilistic reconciliation analysis across vertebrates

- Gene duplication is considered to be a major driving force in evolution that enables the genome of a species to acquire new functions. A reconciliation - a mapping of gene tree vertices to the edges or vertices of a species tree explains where gene duplications have occurred on the species tree. In this study, we sample reconciliations from a posterior over reconciliations, gene trees, edge lengths and other parameters, given a species tree and gene sequences. We employ a Bayesian analysis tool, based on the probabilistic model DLRS that integrates gene duplication, gene loss and sequence evolution under a relaxed molecular clock for substitution rates, to obtain this posterior. By applying these methods, we perform a genome-wide analysis of a nine species dataset, OPTIC, and conclude that for many gene families, the most parsimonious reconciliation (MPR) - a reconciliation that minimizes the number of duplications - is far from the correct explanation of the evolutionary history. For the given dataset, we observe that approximately 19% of the sampled reconciliations are different from MPR. This is in clear contrast with previous estimates, based on simpler models and less realistic assumptions, according to which 98% of the reconciliations can be expected to be identical to MPR. We also generate heatmaps showing where in the species trees duplications have been most frequent during the evolution of these species.
