  • Trajectory Segmentation for a Recommendation Module of a Customer Relationship Management System
  • 2017
  • In: Proceedings - 2017 IEEE International Conference on Internet of Things, IEEE Green Computing and Communications, IEEE Cyber, Physical and Social Computing, IEEE Smart Data, iThings-GreenCom-CPSCom-SmartData 2017. - : IEEE. ; , s. 1150-1155
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In business analytics some industries rely heavily on commercial geo-demographic segmentation systems (MOSAIC, ACORN, etc.), which are a universally strong predictor of user's behavior: from diabetes propensity and purchasing habits to political preferences. A segment is defined with a postcode of the client's home address. Recent research suggests that a mature competitor to geo-demographic segmentation is about to emerge: segmentation based on user mobility is reported to be a reliable proxy of social well-being of the neighborhood. In this submission, we have completed a user segmentation model based on clustering of user trajectories from the Call Detail Records covering one week of activity of one region in Sweden. The new segmentation has been compared against MOSAIC in the recommendation module of a customer relationship management system and has revealed better business options with regard to network exploitation and potential revenues. The implementation is available from the corresponding author (JS or LL) on request.

  • Recommendations for marketing campaigns in telecommunication business based on the footprint analysis : Who is a good client?
  • 2017
  • In: 2017 8th International Conference on Information, Intelligence, Systems and Applications, IISA 2017. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781538637319 ; , s. 513-518
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A major investment made by a telecom operator goes into the infrastructure and its maintenance, while business revenues depend on how efficiently it is exploited. We present a data-driven analytic strategy based on combinatorial optimization and analysis of historical data. The data cover historical mobility in one region of Sweden during a week. Applying the proposed method in a case study, we have identified the optimal combination of geodemographic segments in the customer base, developed a functionality to assess the potential of a planned marketing campaign, and investigated how many and which segments to target for customer base growth. A comprehensible summary of the conclusions is created via execution of the queries with a fuzzy logic component. © 2017 IEEE.

  • MEASURES OF WAIST AND HIP MODIFY SEX-SPECIFIC ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN BODY MASS INDEX AND PREVALENCE OF CORONARY ARTERY CALCIFICATION IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS
  • 2019
  • In: Journal of the American College of Cardiology. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 0735-1097 .- 1558-3597. ; 73:9, s. 13-13
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Background: Obesity is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, there is still a debate whether accumulation of fat in certain depots modifies this risk. Using data from the CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS), we investigated if anthropometric measurements of obesity (waist and hip) modifies the risk of coronary artery calcification. Methods: In the first 15,810 participants in SCAPIS (mean age 58 years, 52% women), data on coronary artery calcification score (CACS) and anthropometry were recorded and traditional cardiovascular risk factors were measured. Body mass index (BMI) was categorized as; <25, 25-30, 30-35 and >35 kg/m2 , quartiles of waist and hip circumferences were constructed within each BMI category and compared using the lowest quartile as reference. Results were adjusted for site, age, smoking and diabetes status. Results: Obesity (BMI >30 kg/m2 ) was found in 21.9% of men and in 20.5% of women. In both sexes the odds ratio (OR) for CACS >0 increased with increasing BMI categories: comparing <25 and >35 kg/m2 , OR = 2.1 (95% CI: 1.6-2.7) for men and OR = 1.4 (1.2-1.8) for women. In addition, increasing quartiles of waist significantly increased the prevalence of CACS >0 for men [p = 0.05; OR = 1.2 (1.0-1.4) for highest quartile] and women [p = 0.005; OR = 1.3 (1.1-1.5)] while increasing quartiles of hip significantly decreased the prevalence for men [p = 0.005; OR = 0.8 (0.6-0.9)] and women [p = 0.04; OR = 0.8 (0.7-0.9)]. Data on education level and physical activity did not affect the model. Conclusion: Increased BMI is associated with increased prevalence of coronary artery calcification and the distribution of fat modifies this risk. Our results suggest that gluteofemoral adipose tissue (hip) counteracts the negative effects associated with BMI and abdominal adipose tissue (waist).

  • Antiphagocytic Function of an IgG Glycosyl Hydrolase from Streptococcus equi subsp equi and Its Use as a Vaccine Component
  • 2012
  • In: Infection and Immunity. - 0019-9567 .- 1098-5522. ; 80, s. 2914-2919
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Endo Se from Streptococcus equi subsp. equi is an enzyme hydrolyzing glycosyl groups on IgG, analogous to EndoS from Streptococcus pyogenes. We here show that the activity of EndoSe leads to an antiphagocytic function and may thus be a contributory factor to immune evasion of S. equi. Despite the damaging effect that EndoSe has on IgG, antibodies against EndoSe can neutralize its function. Antibodies against EndoSe restored the opsonic activity of specific opsonizing antibodies. Mice infected with either S. equi subsp. equi or subsp. zooepidemicus or S. pyogenes could be protected by vaccination with EndoSe. It is speculated that EndoSe could be a suitable vaccine candidate against streptococcal infections.

  • Passive suspension feeding in Amphiura filiformis (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea): Feeding behaviour in flume flow and potential feeding rate of field populations
  • 1996
  • In: Mar Ecol-Progr Ser. - 0171-8630. ; 139:1-3, s. 143-155
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Experimental studies in a laboratory flume show that the sediment-living brittle-star Amphiura filiformis captures suspended particles. Feeding activity is a function of now velocity with few animals extending feeding arms in still water. Flow velocity also affects the orientation of feeding arms, and we suggest that this orientation is partly controlled by A. filiformis. By combining field measurements of current velocity and seston concentration with morphometrics and filtration models, a theoretical encounter rate of suspended particles was calculated for A. filiformis. In terms of organic content, A. filiformis can potentially balance growth and respiration with ingested seston although balance will strongly depend on retention efficiency and particle quality. Detailed measurements of flow around feeding arms revealed complex now patterns that will limit the applicability of available models of food encounter for passive suspension feeders, but our sensitivity analysis indicates that suspended aggregates may be especially important in the nutrition of this species.
