  • Building Sustainable Systems for Schooling in Turbulent Times : Big ideas from the sciences
  • 2021. - 1
  • Ingår i: Crisis and Pandemic Leadership. - London : Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. - 9781475860634 - 9781475860627 - 9781475860641 ; , s. 7-22
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on the importance for school leaders to create strong internal systems of work that are interdependent and interconnected around a common purpose and set of values to be responsive to changing conditions including crises. Based on six lessons from the sciences drawing from systems theory, chaos and complexity and network theory, we illustrate how educational leaders can ignite energy for reimagining and reshaping schools no matter the turbulent times.  The sustainability of schooling as a public or private service depends on how well networks are built that become complex adaptive systems of learning for a school’s development. The future of schooling depends on bold leadership that embraces systems-thinking, living on the edge of chaos, and network-thinking to become adaptive no matter the crisis.

  • Developing adaptivity and responsiveness in organisations through human network structures : a management strategy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Leadership, Education, Personality: An Interdisciplinary Journal. - : Springer. - 2524-6178. ; 5:1-2, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Networking is promoted as vital for contemporary organizational development, yet little research exists on how networks can be designed within organizations to strengthen the infrastructure toward agility and responsiveness. In this article, we examine findings from an ethnographic study to explore the application of networking as a management strategy to foster adaptability and responsiveness to both emerging internal and external needs.

  • Quality in preschools through systematic quality work – a principal’s perspective
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Quality Assurance in Education. - : Emerald. - 0968-4883 .- 1758-7662. ; 32:2, s. 257-273
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore existing and desired methodologies for systematic quality work to promote quality in preschools from the principal’s perspective. Design/methodology/approach: A collaborative approach was used in this research project, and principals were asked to complete portfolio assignments. Their answers to those portfolio assignments were analysed by the research team and subsequently compared to total quality management values. Findings: Existing and desired methodologies for systematic quality work are presented and sorted into 13 and 17 groups, respectively. The principals desire four times more methodologies than they are presently using to promote systematic quality work, and the results show that they must extend their methodologies to support TQM values. Research limitations/implications: This research is based on answers collected from 18 principals in one municipality in Sweden. Practical implications: The use of the cornerstone model provides a framework to illustrate the application of TQM in preschools. Originality/value: Principals struggle to find time for systemic quality work. The presented results can be used to work systematically with quality in preschools and other organizations.

  • Approaching system thinking in schools by linking quality and sustainability: : moving from theory to practice
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Systems Thinking for Sustainable Schooling. - : Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. - 9781475866391 - 9781475866407 - 9781475866414 ; , s. 90-105
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we illustrate how sustainable development, as both a concept and goal, can be integrated into a school’s strategic management systems and operational programming to achieve sustainable quality development. Systems thinking and long-term thinking are two strategic concepts that are highlighted to help educational leaders develop schools that are adaptive and responsive to the changing needs of students and society

  • Arts-based Interventions in Business : Understanding “value-added” for sustainable quality development
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS of the 28th Annual Conference, International Sustainable Development Research Society. - Stockholm, Sweden : Södertörns högskola. - 9789189504172 ; , s. 1749-1767
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper contributes to the exploration of culture as the fourth dimension in sustainable development, and its application in the business to support sustainable quality development. The past decade has witnessed a growing interest in arts-based innovation (ABI) to foster human capital as a value-added resource to achieve and sustain quality. As a co-creative process, arts-based practice stimulates out-ofthe-box thinking and reflection, which is essential to leading organizations in complex times. Assessing the value of ABI is challenging since it doesn’t fit into standard measures. At present, two models exist that examine value at distinct levels within an organization. Some suggest, however, the need for a more integrated view in which value is seen through the interdependence of levels. This has led to an interest to develop a multi-perspective approach to examine value from a systems perspective. The purpose of this paper is to apply the concept of the learning organization to explore further a framework for assessing the value of ABI in business from a systems perspective.

  • Dancing the Data : A Duo-Ethnographic Exploration Toward Dialogic Reflexivity in Qualitative Data Analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Inquiry. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8004 .- 1552-7565. ; 29:5, s. 558-570
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Qualitative researchers continue to push methodological boundaries to study social phenomena using arts-based practices. Research methodologists suggest that the arts open new possibilities in research through the very nature of the arts to stimulate and evoke perspectives. The arts promote dialogue, which yields new insights, highlights multiple meanings, and questions norm-based traditions. This article presents findings from a duo-ethnography to explore the application of the arts as a dialogic-reflexive process during the data analysis phase in qualitative research. Findings contribute with insights into how science and culture are combined methodologically to facilitate dialogic-reflexivity in research and meaning-making.

  • Expanding How We Think about Quality in Education
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Systems Thinking for Sustainable Schooling. - : Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. - 9781475866407 - 9781475866391 - 9781475866414 ; , s. 17-32
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this chapter is to re-examine the concept of quality in education from a contemporary quality management perspective. Since the 1990s quality management has expanded to embrace the principles of chaos and complexity theory which provides new insights into leading in an age of complexity. This expanded perspective of is important for educators to develop and sustain quality in schools to prepare youth with knowledge and skills for living and work in the future.

  • Fostering narratives through arts-based research : A methodological exploration
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS of the 28th Annual Conference, International Sustainable Development Research Society. - Stockholm : Södertörns högskola. - 9789189504172 ; , s. 68-84
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Culture has been central to societal development for centuries as an experienced-based event, and a catalyst for change. Culture is now recognized as a fourth cornerstone for achieving sustainable development. This paper contributes to the ISDSR Agenda on culture and sustainable development through the lens of qualitative research methods. Specifically, this paper explores methodological possibilities and implications to apply arts-based practice as a dialogic tool to foster multiple narratives, the inclusion of voice, and diversity of perspective contributing to Track 1B.Qualitative researchers continue to push methodological boundaries to study social phenomena. Among the methodological developments is an exploration of the application of the arts. Research methodologists suggest that the arts open new possibilities in research through the very nature of the arts to stimulate and evoke perspectives. The arts promote dialogue which yields new insights; highlights multiple meanings, opens space for diversity, and questions norm-based traditions. The purpose of this paper is to present findings from a duo-ethnography to explore the application of the arts as a dialogic-reflexive process during the data analysis phase in qualitative research. Findings contribute with concrete insights into how science and culture can be combined as a methodological approach to garner perspective and invite voice to achieve sustainable development.
