  • A Microcalorimetric Study of Macrocyclic Complexes in Aqueous Solution
  • 1998
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The present work involves a microcalorimetric characterization of the interactions among macrocyclic compounds and aliphatic molecules in aqueous solution. The macrocyclic compounds used in the study are a-,b- and g-cyclodextrin and 25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxycalix[4]arene-5,11,17,23- tetrasulphonate. The results include enthalpies, entropies, standard Gibb's energies and heat capacities of the interactions. Further, an experimental model for a vaporization calorimeter has been constructed, tested and discussed.

  • Scope of nucleotide chemistry as studied by isothermal titration microcalorimetry
  • 2004
  • In: Current Organic Chemistry. - 1385-2728. ; 8:3, s. 243-250
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The area of isothermal titration microcalorimetric (ITC) studies on solution systems involving nucleotides is reviewed. 62 references are cited. About 25 ITC studies on nucleotide systems have been published during the last two decades. The main part (ca 95%) of these papers deal with nucleotide-protein interactions and one paper involves nucleotide-nucleotide binding studies. The results of such studies include stoichiometry, the (concentration) binding constant, K-b, the enthalpy of binding, DeltaH(b)degrees, the standard Gibbs free energy of binding, DeltaG(b)degrees, the entropy of binding, DeltaS(b)degrees, and the heat capacity of binding at constant pressure, DeltaC(p)degrees. Information on proton uptake/release upon complex formation, modeling on binding cooperativity and conformational change can also be derived. In binding studies, calorimetric DeltaC(p)degrees and DeltaH(b)degrees data have been used to model the change in apolar and polar solvent accessible surface areas, DeltaASA(npol) and DeltaASA(pol) respectively.

  • Thermodynamics of binding of alpha-cyclodextrin to straight-chain alkyl derivatives in aqueous solution
  • 2003
  • In: Journal of Inclusion Phenomena and Molecular Recognition in Chemistry. - 0923-0750. ; 46:3-4, s. 125-132
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Apparent standard Gibbs energy, enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity data of the interactions of alpha-cyclodextrin (alphaCD) to some n-carboxylates H(CH2)(n)COO- (n = 4 - 6), are determined by isothermal titration microcalorimetry at different temperatures in phosphate buffer, pH 9.0, assuming a 1 : 1 model in dilute solution. Modelling of contributions of the thermodynamic properties of the solution indicates that aCD undergoes conformational change upon binding to homologous series of n-carboxylates, n-alcohols, alpha,omega-alkane dicarboxylates and alpha,omega-alkane diols.
