  • Kampen om den högre utbildningens syften och mål : en studie av svensk utbildningspolitik
  • 2009
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The specific interest of this dissertation is to analyze and discuss the Swedish political struggle of defining the purposes and aims of higher education during the time period 1992-2007. Underlying this specific interest is a broader interest to take part in a multifold discussion concerning the role of higher education in relation to issues of societal and democratic development and of individual identity and citizenship, in times defined in terms of globalization and pluralism. The study takes its point of departure in discourse theory that directs the research interest to language use and the analysis of the political struggle as a contested discursive practice. The main aims of the study are: (I) To analyze the different discourses concerning the purposes and aims of higher education that are (re)articulated in the political struggle. (II) To analyze how the subject student is positioned in the different discourses. (III) To discuss hegemonic tendencies within the political struggle. The material studied in the dissertation consists of national and European policy texts, including government bills, official government inquiries, departmental reports and declarations from the Bologna process. From the analysis four discourses and subject positions provided for the student are constructed and derived; the classical academic discourse and the critically trained student; the discourse of globalization and the employable student; the discourse of democracy and the actively participating student; and finally the discourse of individual identity and the reflexive student. From the analysis it is concluded that it is possible to observe a variation in language use – in terms of the occurrence of (re)articulation of the different discourses – in the 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century in the political struggle. The closer one gets to 2007 the more this variation in language use is reduced, and the narrower definitions of the purposes and aims of higher education one finds, owing to the hegemonic tendencies of the discourse of globalization. It is also concluded that national politics then assume a more bureaucratic shape and guide itself towards administration of supranational (European) definitions.

  • Local overexpression of GH and GH/IGF1 effects in the adult mouse hippocampus.
  • 2012
  • In: The Journal of endocrinology. - 1479-6805. ; 215:2, s. 257-68
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • GH therapy improves hippocampal functions mainly via circulating IGF1. However, the roles of local GH and IGF1 expression are not well understood. We investigated whether transgenic (TG) overexpression in the adult brain of bovine GH (bGH) under the control of the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) promoter affected cellular proliferation and the expression of transcripts known to be induced by systemic GH in the hippocampus. Cellular proliferation was examined by 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine immunohistochemistry. Quantitative PCR and western blots were performed. Although robustly expressed, bGH-Tg did not increase either cell proliferation or survival. However, bGH-Tg modestly increased Igf1 and Gfap mRNAs, whereas other GH-associated transcripts were unaffected, i.e. the GH receptor (Ghr), IGF1 receptor (Igf1r), 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase (Cnp), ionotropic glutamate receptor 2a (Nr2a (Grin2a)), opioid receptor delta (Dor), synapse-associated protein 90/postsynaptic density-95-associated protein (Sapap2 (Dlgap2)), haemoglobin beta (Hbb) and glutamine synthetase (Gs (Glul)). However, IGF1R was correlated with the expression of Dor, Nr2a, Sapap2, Gs and Gfap. In summary, although local bGH expression was robust, it activated local IGF1 very modestly, which is probably the reason for the low response of previous GH-associated response parameters. This would, in turn, indicate that hippocampal GH is less important than endocrine GH. However, as most transcripts were correlated with the expression of IGF1R, there is still a possibility for endogenous circulating or local GH to act via IGF1R signalling. Possible reasons for the relative bio-inactivity of bGH include the bell-shaped dose-response curve and cell-specific expression of bGH.

  • Exercise intervention for the treatment of trismus in head and neck cancer - a prospective two-year follow-up study.
  • 2016
  • In: Acta oncologica (Stockholm, Sweden). - 1651-226X. ; 55:6, s. 686-692
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background This study aims to investigate the long-term effects of structured trismus intervention in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) and trismus in terms of mouth opening, trismus-related symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQL). Material and methods Fifty patients with HNC to receive radiotherapy±chemotherapy were included in this prospective study along with a matched control group. The intervention group received a 10-week structured exercise with a jaw mobilizing device (TheraBite® jaw device or Engström device). Patients were assessed before and after trismus exercise intervention and at a two-year follow-up. Primary endpoint was maximum interincisal opening (MIO) and secondary endpoints included trismus-related symptoms and HRQL assessed with patient-reported outcome (PRO)-instruments [Gothenburg Trismus Questionnaire (GTQ), European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the related HNC-specific module the EORTC Head & Neck Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-H&N35)]. Results The intervention group had a higher MIO at the two-year follow-up compared to the control group (40.5mm and 34.3mm, respectively), which was statistically significant. The intervention group also reported less jaw-related problems according to the GTQ and higher functioning as measured by EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-H&N35 compared to the control group. Conclusion A positive persistent effect of exercise intervention for trismus in HNC patients was found with regard to MIO, trismus-related symptoms and HRQL. Exercise intervention is important in long-term treatment of radiation-induced trismus in HNC patients. The trismus-specific questionnaire, GTQ, is a valuable tool for observing and evaluating trismus over time.

  • The Micro-Vertex-Detector for the bar PANDA experiment
  • 2013
  • In: Journal of Physics, Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 426
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • PANDA is a fixed target experiment that will be carried out at the future FAIR facility. PANDA will provide an excellent tool to address fundamental question in the field of hadronic physics, with a physic program that extends from the investigation of QCD (providing insight in the mechanisms of mass generation and confinement) to the test of fundamental symmetries. The Micro-Vertex-Detector located in the innermost part of the central tracking system will be composed by hybrid pixel and double-sided micro-strip silicon detectors. The Micro-Vertex-Detector will play an important role for the PANDA physics goals. The possibility to reconstruct the secondary vertices and the applicability of a precise D meson tagging is essential for the spectroscopy in the open charm sector and the charmonium mass region. To this aim the Micro-Vertex-Detector features a spatial resolution better than 100μm, a time resolution better than 20ns, a limited material budget, and a high data rate capability in a triggerless environment. An overview of the Micro-Vertex-Detector related to the physics goals will be presented.
