  • Nordic Media Histories of Propaganda and Persuasion : An Introduction
  • 2022. - 1
  • Ingår i: Nordic Media Histories of Propaganda and Persuasion. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783031051708 - 9783031051739 - 9783031051715 ; , s. 3-27
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The introduction to the edited collection maps the overarching aims of the book, discusses the time frame and the geographical focus, and situates the book in a media historical research tradition on propaganda and persuasion. A key ambition with this volume is to advance a transnational approach to media history, highlighting how actors and institutions, ideas and practices, have been shaped by transnational entanglements within the Nordic region and beyond. Further, the introduction lays out the rationale for focusing on the entanglement of things, ideas and actors rather than media representations, cross-border connections rather than national comparisons, as well as the importance of a broad media concept in the study of propaganda and persuasion. Lastly, the introduction provides a short overview of chapters included in the book.

  • A Rain of Propaganda : The Media Production of the Office of War Information in Stockholm, 1942–1945
  • 2022. - 1
  • Ingår i: Nordic Media Histories of Propaganda and Persuasion. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783031051708 - 9783031051739 - 9783031051715 ; , s. 119-140
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter examines the media production of the US Office of War Information (OWI) in Stockholm, 1942–1945. While previous research has focused on the organization of OWI and the American view on war propaganda in Scandinavia, little emphasis has been placed on the actual production and circulation of American propaganda in Sweden during World War II. Drawing on previously neglected archival material from the Civilian Security Service’s (Allmänna Säkerhetstjänsten) counter-espionage on American propaganda activities in Sweden, this chapter maps the material conditions for US propaganda and the circulation of OWI-supported media (e.g. books, magazines, films, radio and news stories) in Sweden as well as the Nordic countries in general.

  • Ett filmbolag i det allmännas tjänst? : Svensk Filmindustri och skolfilmens flytande gränser
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Efterkrigstidens samhällskontakter. - 2002-5017 .- 1654-6601. - 9789198504569 - 9789198504576 ; 43, s. 41-72
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Contested Pictures of Persuasion : American Images of Foetuses in Swedish Antiabortion Campaigns of the 1970s and 1980s
  • 2022. - 1
  • Ingår i: Nordic Media Histories of Propaganda and Persuasion. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783031051708 - 9783031051739 - 9783031051715 ; , s. 97-116
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter explores the circulation, use and public discussion of images of human foetuses travelling from the US to Sweden in the period before and after the introduction of abortion on demand in Sweden in 1975. In this period, new antiabortion groups formed and started to use graphic images of aborted foetuses in their campaigns. This chapter highlights the transnational and transmedial character of this material by demonstrating that many of the images originated from American sources and that many different media were used to spread them, for example, books, brochures, films and slides. Furthermore, this chapter analyses the public discussion about this material, focusing on the uses of words such as “truth”, “information” and “propaganda” in the debates.

  • Cronqvist, Marie, 1973-, et al. (författare)
  • Afterword : Towards a Tactical Turn?
  • 2025
  • Ingår i: Media history in the long twentieth century. - New York & London : Routledge. - 9781032618272 - 9781032618289 - 9781032618326 ; , s. 259-261
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Integrating media studies with history, Media Tactics in the Long Twentieth Century explores the dynamic relationship between tactics and strategies in recent history.Drawing on examples from a range of different countries and world regions, and looking at the infrastructures, entanglements, and institutions involved, the volume makes a strong case for media tactics as a new field of scholarly inquiry and for the importance of a historically informed approach. In contrast to strategic communication approaches, this media historical intervention contributes to new knowledge about the practical implementation of strategies. First foregrounding tactics as an object of study, the volume then counters the presentism of contemporary studies by adding a necessary historical perspective. Moreover, the book theoretically disentangles the concept of strategy – from an abstract contemporary buzzword to concrete, hands-on actions – which in turn reveals the complexity of using media strategies and media tactics in reality. This volume will interest scholars and students working in the field of media and communication in general, and in the subfields of strategic communication, public relations, media history, and propaganda studies.

  • Afterword : Towards a Tactical Turn?
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Media Tactics in the Long Twentieth Century. - London : Routledge. - 9781032618326 ; , s. 259-261
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this afterword, Marie Cronqvist, Fredrik Mohammadi Norén, and Emil Stjernholm tie together the chapters in Media Tactics in the Long Twentieth Century and summarise some of the book's key themes. Three key knowledge contributions are highlighted. First, the volume foregrounds tactics as a study object in itself, not just the effects or outcomes of strategic thinking. Second, the book counters the presentism of contemporary studies by adding a historical perspective. And third, by theoretically disentangling the concept of strategy from an abstract, contemporary buzzword to concrete, hands-on actions, some of the many complexities of operational media strategies and media tactics are revealed.

  • Introduction : Towards a History of Media Tactics
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Media Tactics in the Long Twentieth Century. - London : Routledge. ; , s. 1-15
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The introduction to this edited collection situates the volume in relation to previous research on strategies and tactics in the humanities and the social sciences. Taking a media historical point of departure, a key ambition with this volume is to foreground the dialectic relationship between strategies and tactics in what we call the long twentieth century. Drawing on examples from a range of different countries and world regions, and highlighting the infrastructures, entanglements, and institutions involved, this book makes a case for a tactical turn and for media tactics as an important scholarly study object in itself, and the historically informed approach as a way of exploration. Lastly, the introduction provides a short overview of the chapters that have been included in this volume.
