  • Grönskan i den byggda miljön och dess hälsoaspekter : betydelsen av närhet, storlek och olika upplevelsevärden
  • 2024
  • In: Den byggda formens betydelse : kunskap från forskning. - 9789189581494 ; :2024:6, s. 112-
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • Health-Promoting Nature-Based Paradigms in Urban Planning
  • 2023
  • In: Encyclopedia. - 2673-8392. ; 3, s. 1419-1438
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Since the 19th century, urban planning has largely been guided by ambitions to improve the population’s wellbeing and living conditions. Parks and green areas have played a significant role in this work. However, the confidence in the function of green areas, and thus the motives for creating urban parks and green open spaces, have shifted over the years, which has affected both the planning and design of green areas. This entry describes three overarching paradigm shifts in urban planning, from the end of the 18th century to today, and the focus is on the major paradigm shift that is underway: how green areas can mitigate climate effects, increase biodiversity and at the same time support people’s health and living conditions in a smart city.

  • Indikatorer för hälsopromoverande urbana grönområden : kunskapssammanställning
  • 2022
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • The Alnarp Method : an interdisciplinary-based design of holistic healing gardens derived from research and development in Alnarp Rehabilitation Garden
  • 2022
  • In: Routledge Handbook of Urban Landscape Research. - London : Routledge. - 9780367625252 ; , s. 299-317
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter aims to create an understanding of and opportunities for practicing landscape architects to create outdoor environments as a resource for health and well-being for people with stress-related mental illness. The overall intention is to describe how the care recipients’ use of gardens and parks can lead to healing and well-being, which generates theories and tools for use in the health design process. The work is based on research and development in Alnarp Rehabilitation Garden, which has led to the development of a theoretical framework for the design of healing and supportive environments. This work has led to methods for evidence-based design, which contain important environmental qualities (perceived sensory dimensions) and contact zones with the outdoors that are used as part of a holistic view for the use of the outdoor environment in a healing process.

  • Forests for wood production and human wellbeing – what are the trade-offs in long-term forest management planning?
  • 2014
  • In: International Forestry Review. - 1465-5489 .- 2053-7778. ; 16, s. 24-24
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Social values of forests are increasingly recognized as important objectives in forest management planning. For instance, forests contribute to human health and wellbeing by providing a suitable environment for recreation and rehabilitation. However, it remains a challenge to defi ne and measure these values in terms of forest variables and to incorporate them into forest planning. The objective of this study is to quantify rehabilitation forest characteristics and analyze trade-offs between wood production and rehabilitation forests. The study builds on previous studies of preferences for different forest types among participants in a stress rehabilitation program. For three forest estates in northern, middle and southern Sweden, correlation analysis indicated that the fi ve most important stand-level variables were age, stems/ha, height, diameter and standing volume. Threshold values were set for these variables as well as spatial criteria to defi ne rehabilitation forest. The Heureka decision support system was used to analyze the relation between maintaining different shares of rehabilitation forest and the loss in net present value (NPV) for forestry over a 100 year period. Preliminary results show that 15–25% can be maintained as rehabilitation forest without considerable decrease in NPV. Age and spatial restrictions seems to be important limiting factors.

  • Forests for wood production and stress recovery : trade-offs in long-term forest management planning
  • 2015
  • In: European Journal of Forest Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1612-4669 .- 1612-4677. ; 134:5, s. 755-767
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Forests play an important role, contributing to human health and well-being as environments for recreation and rehabilitation. Stress has become a significant problem in modern societies, and the importance of forests as environments for stress relief has been recognized in recent years. To maintain and create forests for rehabilitation, consideration of their rehabilitation value needs to be incorporated into forest management planning and to do this, we need to define and quantify the characteristics of good rehabilitation forests. This study presents an approach for including rehabilitation value as an aspect of forest management planning. This approach is applied to three case study areas in northern, middle and southern Sweden to identify trade-offs between maintaining high wood production while creating forest areas suitable for rehabilitation from stress-related diseases. The results show that quite large areas of rehabilitation forest (10-15 % of total forest area) can be maintained at a relatively small loss in economic net present value (NPV) of wood production (ca 2 % of maximum NPV). When using the rehabilitation value indicator defined in this study, age and spatial variables (distance to roads and water) seem to be the most limiting factors.
