  • Vulnerable Viewer Positions : Queer Feminist Activists Watching Paradise Hotel
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Vulnerability in Scandinavian art and culture. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030373818 - 9783030373825 ; , s. 195-219
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ambjörnsson and Svensson analyse a group of queer feminist activists watching the reality show Paradise Hotel. Inspired by the feminist research tradition’s interest in consumers, the reality TV format is understood as a genre centred on intervention, participation and emotionality, rather than merely representation. Following Sara Ahmed’s thoughts on orientation, the viewers’ emotional reactions of approaching and distancing themselves from the programme are used to investigate various ways of handling and managing vulnerability. This is achieved through localizing a specific queer feminist viewing position, where the viewers’ feminist identification with female subordination is combined with a camp attitude towards the despised and failed. Thus, through embracing and exposing themselves to the hyperbolic, exaggerated, shameless and sometimes sexist and homophobic representations in the programme, they simultaneously negotiate marginalization, subordination, a longing for inclusion in mainstream society and their own potential middle-class advantage.

  • Changes in co-use of alcohol and cannabis among Nordic adolescents in the 21st century : Results from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Drug and Alcohol Review. - 0959-5236 .- 1465-3362. ; 43:3, s. 616-624
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: In the 21st century, there has been a decline in alcohol use among adolescents in most Nordic countries, while trends of cannabis use have diverged. We explore how alcohol and cannabis use, respectively, and co-use of the two substances, have changed among Nordic adolescents. Three hypotheses are used to frame the study: (i) cannabis use has substituted alcohol use; (ii) there has been a parallel decline in both substances; and/or (iii) there has been a ‘hardening’ of users, implying that alcohol users increasingly use cannabis. Methods: Data from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs, conducted among 15- to 16-year-olds in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden (N = 74,700, 49% boys), were used to explore trends of past-year alcohol and cannabis use in the period 2003–2019.Results: The proportion of adolescents reporting alcohol use decreased significantly in all Nordic countries except Denmark. The proportion of those using cannabis only was low (0.0%–0.7%) and stable in all countries. The total number of substance use occasions declined among all adolescents in all countries but Denmark. Among alcohol users, cannabis use became increasingly prevalent in all countries but Denmark.Discussion and Conclusions: We found no support for the ‘parallel decline hypothesis' in alcohol and cannabis use among Nordic adolescents. Partially in line with the ‘substitution hypothesis’, cannabis use accounted for an increasing proportion of all substance use occasions. Our results suggests that the co-use of alcohol and cannabis has become more common, thus also providing support to the ‘hardening’ hypothesis.

  • Affirm Survival : On Queer Strategies of Resistance at Queer Funerals
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Queer Futures. - : Ashgate. - 9781409437109 ; , s. 203-218
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following debates surrounding the anti-social turn in queer theory in recent years, there has been a renewed interest inthe role of activism, the limits of the political, and the question of normativity and ethics. Queer Futures engages with theseconcerns, exploring issues of complicity and agency with a central focus on the material and economic as well asphilosophical dimensions of sexual politics. Presenting some of the latest research in queer theory, this book drawstogether diverse perspectives to shed light on possible ‘queer futures’ when different affective, temporal, and localcontexts are brought into play. As such, it will appeal to scholars of cultural, political, literary, and social theory, as well asthose with interests in gender and sexuality, activism, and queer theory.

  • Liket i garderoben : En studie av sexualitet, livsstil och begravning
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis demonstrates and problematizes the work of the heteronormative surrounding the death of gay-identified men in Sweden in the 1980s. It does so by using the funeral as a lens through which to interrogate what happens when heteronormative institutions and cultural norms are confronted by gay deaths doubly stigmatised by the 'wrong' sexuality and Aids. The term funeral is employed in a broad sense to include rituals and events, such as planning, announcements, preparations, memorial services and burials. The empirical content consists of texts, pictures, and other documents, as well as interviews and case studies of specific funerals. Funerals are analysed with the help of ideas derived from thanatology and ritual studies as well as insights from queer theory. The thesis asks and answers questions such as: What happens when death, as a cultural construction, is confronted with ideas surrounding male homosexuality? What are the overarching norms made visible at the funerals? And how do funerals act to question or subvert these norms? My analysis focuses upon normative ideas about how life ought to be lived, what human relations matter and their implications for ideas and understandings surrounding loss and grief. The thesis shows that in a heteronormative culture a dead gay man does not count as a loss. Neither do same sex-relationships pass as real relationships. Consequently, gay lovers are not recognized as true mourners. Against this background of stigmatized homosexuality and its signification as non-life, non-relationship, non-family, and non-love, I analyze the funerals of open, self-identified gay men as strategies of re-signification. Three different struggles for recognition are identified: strategies of pride, shame, and normality, which are analyzed in relation to three different identity-constituting emotions: shame, love and melancholy.

  • VI kan inte, vi vill inte, vi törs inte : Osäkert engagemang iskuggan av välfärdsstaten
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Glänta. - Göteborg. - 1104-5205. ; 3-4, s. 25-30
